Yeah, re-read level 1-4:

Change to:

Ring of Feathers or Maelstrom

Chette
07-29-2010, 12:35 PM
The arcane necklace, or whatever it's called, with the mana clicky from korthos
If you have a blue bar, take that necklace

More general: voice of the master and ring of feathers

For all classes from Korthos:
Bracers of Assistance
Cloak of Feathers
Expeditious Boots (1 click)
Anger's Step (2 clicks)
Ring of Feathers
Muckbane

For Melee:
Goggles of Insight

For Casters:
Archivist's Necklace (still use it on my lvl 20 wiz)

One of my favorite twink items is the Necklace of Contemplation from Caverns of Korromar: +5 concentration, +10 hp, +1 attack. It has something for any class and is useable at level 1.

gravnoks band
necklace of contemplation
trapblast goggles (b2a, though there might still be some older unbound ones floating about)
Carnifex (b2a greataxe from deleras)
3x detect secret doors clicky (i get one on any character i have & keep it on them till cap unless i can self-cast, use TS or have tharnes goggles)
3x remove fear clicky
robe of invulnerability (well, for anyone that doesnt use armour anyway but 5/magic DR at level 4 is a huge survivability boost, otherwise any adamantine armour you can get is useful)

Also some bound to account items you can commonly find with no ML that are handy for twinking include:
belt of proof against poison (probably other slots too)
nicked weapons (requires Sharn Syndicate pack)
boots of feather falling (possibly also other slots, and are easier to find than the ring from STK)

Good responses, my take:
necklace of contemplation=junk. disrupts korthos gear bonus sets and doesnt stack with insight goggles.
gravnok's band=huge winner. 2 resists and some fire and cold resist. huge winner.
detect secret doors clickies=winner. more xp, more chests etc. pays for itself. keep one on me till i get DM vision, or tharnes.
Carnifex=yehaw. this is the score. against anything with a pulse, not many better choices out there. 17-20 threat range x3 crits.
Unnamed gear from sharn synd quests. Most notably random jewelry and clothing from protecting the tavern quest. Pulled a no ML improved potency II ring from it.
Insight goggles=huge winner. very few worthwhile goggle options at low lev
Archivist necklace=huge winner. Sp clickie never goes out of style
Anger set: fully stacking +2 to hit really helps lay out the hurt and lets you keep that power attack on

Of all the stuff I've gotten in my short time in the game, I'd have to say the Ring of Feathers would be my pick. May not necessarily be the "best" item in terms of the effect it has on your gameplay, but it's definitely my favorite.

Aid bracers are a lifesaver in a lot of situations, boost the attack to swing your way out of whatever you got into and a few more temporary HP to help you survive (or just get through whatever unscathed)

Casters one and all vote for the clicky from Archivist's Necklace, and I agree: 2 shots a day of 10-35 spell points back is too useful to ignore at just about any level. I rerolled my wizard when I realized I screwed up and went for the arcane might instead, the necklace has saved me, and will continue to save me, insane amounts of platinum from trying to get hold of mnemonic potions.

The only other thing I can think of that would be able to follow up to all this would be the robe/outfit of invulnerability, but that's just cos I don't have one yet and want one really badly. 5/magic DR and min level of 4 if you get the right one.

@Blitzschlag: You wouldn't happen to be a refugee from a certain sci-fi MMO that everyone says is death, death, would you?

Can someone please explain why the Ring of Feathers is considered such a desirable twink item? Does it have some useful purpose in getting around in the early levels, or is it just for astounding newbies with your ability to float?

Isn't Maelstrom an anarchic weapon? Doesn't that bestow a negative level on anyone that isn't chaotic?

Its because a bunch of vets havent run any new quests in years so they don't know you can get FF boots from a level 2-3 quest in the market every time as the end reward. Its in the NW corner.

The only thing ring of feather is good for now is for breaking in any quest of decent level due to having 20 duribility.

I'm liking the Bracers of Assistance

+11 hp and +1 to hit and save vs fear

and I usually pick up about 5 of them cause an extra 55 hp in a quest is helpful

I just wish their was a crafting option to increase their caster level and charges... ya know along the way. Then they'd still be relevant at high levels... 3-5 clickies of 18 hp and +1 to hit and save vs fear xtra hp are always nice... like ablative DR that you can recharge

Run the quest three times and also get Axeblock and Bracers of Assistance. Have all hotbarred and select appropriate block item one for each situation.

trapblast goggles (b2a, though there might still be some older unbound ones floating about)

I've been setting up a new cleric lately, and looked at my old cleric who was made in 2006, specifically hoping to find some "Special" items (SPecifically, items which no longer exist or are not bound but should be)

Much to my dismay, his trapblast goggles (Something i knew i was looking for) is bound to account :( And they predate the level cap getting above 10!

Also, i believe i have platemail of Giants that is only +1, unlike the +4 stated in the definitive loot thread (Another item i was planning on passing down). Man, i am just getting hosed!

EDIT: Looked it up. Turns out the +1 version no longer drops, only the +4 version drops nowadays. Well, looks like i have a rare and valuable item on my hands! And by valuable, i mean complete junk. HERES WHAT I HAVE (http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s220/jgould2005/DDO/Items/Armor/PlatemailofGiants.jpg), and HERE IS WHAT IS CURRENT (http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s220/jgould2005/DDO/Items/Armor/FullPlateofGiants.jpg).

DOUBLE EDIT: Archivist necklace for anyone with a blue bar, even those who don't yet have a blue bar (Rangers and paladins). Goggles of Insight for anyone who ever uses a weapon ever (Which SHOULD be everyone, at low levels!). Its ridiculous how good some of the Korthos stuff is.

For melee, necklace of contemplation. I usually use it until level 8-9 and usually it takes so many hits he get destroyed, and I still don't bind it because I think "I will pass to my next low level char"....

For everyone, robe of invulnerability. Khortos+Harbor+Market quest you see 0 0 0 0 0 as your incoming damage, you ge tdamage only when critted.

I suggest instead of Axe Block get the cloak that does the same thing and go with more Assistance Bracers... that way you can click the Aid Clicky put on the Spearbane Bracers and the Axebane Cloak and ignore even more damage types at the same time

Bracers of Assistance is definitely one I hang onto for a long time. Free hp is never out of style. This is additionally so for a wizard on the pale master enhancement line, as the PM skelly summons and special attacks use hit points to power them (also why any pale master should seek to have some form of healing item or spell available). I never thought of getting more than one and hotbarring them all though! I foresee a return to Korthos in my future....

I always snag the rugged belt and the goggles of insight, though I usually end up replacing the belt relatively early. Typically the replacement is a Light Fortification belt. This goes double for any warforged character, since that LF belt will mean a 50% chance of the enemy failing to crit on a warforged. Whether I replace the goggles depends on the type of character, particularly on whether the Korthos end set I choose has goggles. Let's not forget the protection +1 ring that drops from the Korthos Island rares at times. I hang onto those till I get a better protection item or find a ring I really need and have no room for. You'll also use the ring of water breathing over and over until you get a better water breathing item or can self-cast. And even self-casters are often better off carrying a clicky and saving their SP for something else. Even my warforged characters keep the ring around, because it's only one inventory slot and sometimes you'll find yourself in a party where most fleshies have junked the ring, and anyone nearby when you cast it gets the spell too.

For casters, the Archivist Necklace has already been mentioned, and is vital. Later on, hotbar it and another necklace and switch between them only long enough to click the spell point boost. Just be sure the benefit of the other necklace is not lost by unequipping it to swap the clicky. Mostly this only seems to be an issue for "of Power #" items that grant bonus spell points when worn. I haven't really tested to see if unequipping an "of Power" item and re-equipping it means you lose the bonus SP it grants till you shrine next. It seems logical it should, though, as otherwise unequipping and re-equipping the Power items would be an endless mana regen.

The other thing for casters I would recommend is the eternal wands (eternal means unlike regular wands they don't vanish when you use all their charges. They recharge slowly when unused, or fully at a shrine). You get either a finger of fire or....what's the light-based one for clerics?....for the end of the first tutorial mission. And there's an eternal acid splash wand as an end reward for the Lost Seekers chain in Waterworks. Even my level 8 wizard is still holding on to both of these. Finger of fire does 1d3+3 damage, and the acid does 1d3+5 damage. This is minimal damage per hit, but the saving grace is their rapid casting speed. You can wear through most enemies in that 1-4 level with repeated casts of the wand, and the acid wand is pretty accurate with a targeted enemy. They're useful as either panic buttons when your sp runs out or as trash killers to save your sp for better targets. I've worn through a boss with the acid wand before...it just takes not dying long enough for that damage to add up. :> The acid wand is 300-400hp of damage per rest, the finger of fire is 200-300. Somewhere there is an eternal wand of cure light wounds for clerics, but I can never remember which quest. The last eternal wand I've encountered is the ice wand from the Risia games when they come around, but it's not quite as useful due to much slower casting speed.

My choices:

Phiarlan Mirror Cloak ( In my opinion, the best low level item. Move Silently/Hide +5 and Spell Resistence 17 ML 3)
Trapblast Goggles
Aryln's Ring (+3 Dex./+1Protection)
Ring of Feathers

Everyone of my new characters get this set-up ( Excluding Aryln's Ring ML 5), before I have even run a quest with them. I also like to have a bunch of pure good weapons. And potency/magi items as well.

I have to say that the mirror cloak is excellent and definetly my favorite number 1 pick!

Cure/repair pots (srs pref)
Muckbane
Ring of Feathers
carnifex/maelstrom
robe of invulnerability (lvl4)

I got a no min level lssr false life acid guard belt way back when guard items came out and they were tweaking the numbers... I've used for new toons so much it's almost worn out.

That shadow crypt docent isn't bad for caster TRs, for a couple of levels.

I recently came back to the game and I had no idea I could pass end rewards from character to character. I hope it hasn't always been like this, because I can't tell you how many characters I've run through tangleroot to get the same items over and over in the past! lol

Recent change. The dw goggles(and various other items) are now BtA rather than BtC. But I still run tangleroot for goggles on all my melees...makes soloing a lot easier when I just don't have time to get a group together :)

Personally I think it's the Quarter Staff you get from Jeets at the very very begining of Korhos Island.

It doesn't matter what class you play as at the end of the grotto you gat a decent weapon anyway, but that staff is great for using against rust monsters and oozes especially a lower levels, it being starter equipment too means it'll never be permanantly broken and only costs 1cp to repair.

Ashurr

Depends on what you're playing.

I won't say Muckbane as it's much better to just sell any you get for plat ( basic clubs are cheap to replace)

Ring of Feathers - possibly. If you're clumsy - definately.

Carnifex - Yes, even if you're playing ( mayhap, especially) a caster. Masters Touch + Carnifex is very handy at low levels.

Yeah, this is the trick I like... get four or five and you're good to go! And you can cast them on others, such as idiots you have to protect... very nice if you're soloing and don't really have any real healing ability lol Or even in a group, 'cause your cleric is just gonna LOVE how you can help yourself a bit.

I haven't really tested to see if unequipping an "of Power" item and re-equipping it means you lose the bonus SP it grants till you shrine next. It seems logical it should, though, as otherwise unequipping and re-equipping the Power items would be an endless mana regen.

Power/Wizard items simply increase your maximum SP, it doesn't actually GIVE you more. And removing the item will take the SP from the top, as it were, and will start with the SP you've already used (ie, if you're 80/100 and you remove a Power 2 item, you'll be 80/80, not 60/80). When I solo with my ranger, I used to wear a Discarded Ring, immediately cast Ram's Might upon entering a quest, and then switch out for a move silently ring.

Somewhere there is an eternal wand of cure light wounds for clerics, but I can never remember which quest.

Clerics can get a Spark of Light with the same damage as the Finger of Fire; the healing one is actually Cure Minor Wounds or somesuch, only heals 1-2 points per cast, but it's great for soloing if you can beat the UMD. 50-100 (or more, really) extra HP? Bring it on! Useless during a fight, but perfect for topping up when you get a breather. I suspect most groups would get impatient with somebody using one, though. It and an Eternal Wand of Magic Missile are possible end rewards from Catacombs.

Most of the Korthos stuff should be must-haves. Goggles of Insight? Gimme! Bracers of Assistance? I'll take 5! Curative Cloak? Ditto! Feather Cloak? Never hurts to have a couple, at least until you come across a Feather Falling ring or boots or something. Korthos Island Set of choice? Yes, please! Bracers of Spear/Axebane? Sure! Protector's Gloves? Yippee! Ring of Alertness & Engraved Ring? Yepyepyep! Most of the Korthos stuff won't go out of style for a VERY long time... and you can get it all by level 2 (most of it by level 1, but I'm not convinced I'd try MP at level 1 except in a VERY good group...)

There's also a lot of really nice stuff at the end of Waterworks, Sharn Syndicate (I loves me some nicked weapons... but where's the Nicked Dwarven Axe???), Shan-To-Kor, etc... but those you generally need to be higher level to make it through, or have another character who *is* to pass it down to you.

But if I had to pick just ONE absolutely must-have item for a low-level character... I'd go with Bracers of Assistance. +11 HP and +1 attack/saves against fear for 3 minutes? Yeah, definite winner.
