Do a disproportionate number of DDOers smoke?

Yes, I've noticed a lot of people say on voice chat, the minute there is a break in play: "afk goin for a smoke." Yes its such an easy habit to do, you do a (sometimes) stressful quest and then as a reward for yourself you go light one up. I have been doing this a lot recently.

Well I am currently on my second day of quitting and I found that after a quest is when my cravings get the worst. My brain has been Pavlov'd into expecting a shot of nicotine after hearing that trilling sound of XP being rewarded.

Well I found something that helps a bit. Fool that part of your brain by getting up off the chair and go to where you went for a smoke, bring a coffee or beer or whatever and stay there for the same time you would have having a smoke. Look at the stars, clouds, neighbour in shower, anything. For me it's standing on a balcony. Maybe there's a neurological signal that tricks my brain or something.

Anyway hope it helps someone, maybe its just me but good luck to anyone else who is trying to stay off the evil weed!

And if you do decide to smoke I understand your desire not to stink up your apartment by going outside and all, but be considerate, when my window is open and the fan is blowing, don't stand right outside and let your smoke go from your lungs into my living room. If you don't want your apartment to stink why do you think I want mine to stink?

I smoke.

When we pause for someone to take a bio break, it means 1/2 my party is going to go smoke. We play mostly in guild, so it's pretty much expected now. If the quest takes longer than expected, we'll take an actual rest at the rest shrine to go light up.

With the acquisition of my laptop, I know bring that out with me. Problem is, I unplug everything (external mouse included) and makes it hard to target/cast spells as the party mage.. (I have tried smoking outside without the bio break).

But yeah, 5 of my guild smokes. the other 6 do not.

Lack of common courtesy. When I lived in an apartment, many years ago, I would actually walk out to my car to smoke, even in sucky weather. Because your point is exactly right. I will not say I did not make the mistake once or twice *coughormorecough*, but once it was pointed out to me, I changed. (I was 20 and stupid, shhh..)

It's like not wanting people to force their music on me while they are driving. If I wanted to listen to your music, I would turn it on. So, if you choose not to smoke, I am not going to force it onto you.

"don't stand right outside and let your smoke go from your lungs into my living room"

Firstly, what?
Secondly you live above me? What are the odds?
Thirdly, I'm calling the police as you are tresspassing. I live in a detached house so if you are above me that means you are hiding in my loft.
Oh and Fourthly, as it would upset you that will be another incentive for me to stay off them.

I quit smoking a little over a year ago, here's how I did it:

I removed ALL smoking related items from my life: Matches, Lighters, Ash Trays, etc
I moved to a new non smoking apartment (probably not an option for everyone:p)
I stopped going to bars
I stopped hanging out with my smoker friends (since I moved:p)

As such I was able to quit cold turkey and have had no relapses. However when I find myself watching television and someone is smoking in the show I get the "urge" to smoke. Simply being around other smokers also gives me the "urge". The other day I went to wal-mart and one of the employees was outside smoking and I thought to myself.. "I should bum a smoke off him"...

Ehh.. My point being is its hard to change years on mental conditioning without also changing your environment and the people who you associate with. I'm almost 100% certain that when I go to visit my friends I'll probably end up smoking as they all smoke.

As far as DDO goes, yeah I used to play and smoke. Anytime there was a break in the action.. waiting around at a shrine, waiting on a party to fill, waiting on people to get to the quest, etc... I would light one up. I was easily going through 2 packs a day. Perhaps its the fact that I stopped smoking that made me start to dislike DDO to the point I cant bothered to play it anymore. Smoking did distract me from all the waiting around at least...

I think DDO makes me smoke more than I normally do

I usually smoke in between raids. Partly because the raid finished, partly because I have nothing to do while waiting for the next raid to fill, and partly because I have the thought at the back of my head, 'if this raid goes long I might not get a chance to smoke for awhile.' The problem is once that raid is done, all three reasons come back :p

Ive been smoking for a little more then ten years and am finally thinking of quitting. As i live in New York our ciggarettes are now 10 bucks or a little more a pack depending on where you live.As of right now New York makes something like $4.60 on each pack of ciggarettes that is sold.Somehow New York is still in massive debt.

Not sure how many people in New York Smoke but im guessing at least 4 million people smoke. So thats 4.6 million dollars a DAY that NY State makes off of smokers that buy only one pack a day.Obviously this isnt correct numbers and i just pulled them out of thin air,but still.

I think that i would rather spend the $100 bucks a week i spend on ciggs on anything other then ciggs right now.**** New York. If your thinking of moving to New York ....dont unless you love some of the highest taxes in the country.

Aw well im waiting on a weeks worth of patches to help me quit and hopefully these will do the trick.

What ****es me off is the non-smokers that say they inhale half our smoke but then they don't pay for it! Cheap bastards!

Easy to fix and I'm sure you won't get any complaints. Move your lazy self away from the air those cheap non-smokers are breathing. You get to keep all the smoke to yourself. But then I bet you expect them to move instead of yourself?

I dont mind non smokers.... some of them are actually alright people. Im quite considerate towards them too.

The ones that get me are those that walk past you when your outsid a pub and cough loudly....

Cuse me???? Im out here becuase you lot bi&&hed about me smoking in there, only for you lot to then not bother going in there and thus loads of pubs closing !!! (no arguments from the government sources please, they lie, plain and simple. speak to landlords and ask where their business has gone)

With these people I tend to like bringing up my open palm and slapping them across the face like the whiny old lag they are :D

Please dont get me started on the smoking ban. I dont know about other countries but i do know that the English government just out right lied to get the law pushed through.

I quit last week and have already fell off the wagon twice and bought packs. I started smoking when I was 15 and quit when I was 25. I started again when I was 38 and have been smoking for two years this time.

It sucks trying to quit but I don't think patches are best just go cold turkey. You may fail a few times but if you realy want to quit you will overcome the failures.

The other thing that helps kill the craving for a lot of people is drinking grapefruit juice. Unfortunatly I can't drink it due to interactions with some meds I am on.

Anyway good luck to you the OP in you quitting venture.

i'm a smoker, and often my guildies will say during a break 'time for Farflame to smoke'

I will not however stop in the middle of a quest just to go for a smoke, thats pretty unfair on the rest of the group (i smoke outside due to having children etc)

but agree after a hetic, blood pumping quest. it's good to go for a smoke.

Good luck to anyone trying to quit, all power to you. wish i had never started, but have found it very difficult to stop (been smoking 28 years now)

So you're always smoking 2 at a time? You nicotine fiend! You should add a couple of patches too.

You ma'am have no sense of humor. You seriously need to get over yourself.
