Just a quick question I hope some of you can help me answer.

I plan on TRing my bard into a wiz in the next week or so, making him a 34 point build. I want this Wiz to be CC mainly, with enough put in to elemental damage to throw down a decent firewall and such.

I know that WF wiz gets self healing, resistances, better CON.

I know that Drow have spell resistance and higher INT, which is what I'll need to have CC affect more mobs.

My question is, for the CC wiz, do I go with drow for the extra int or WF, for the benefits that race brings? remember, CC is my main focus with htis build. Thanks a ton everyone, these forums never cease to be helpful when players have a question.

I work on the theory a dead wiz isn't going to cc: anyone.

So with that in mind, I would lean toward the WF. It is so much more survivable. Higher Con, self heals, immunes rather than resists. etc.

Well to counter-argument the previous poster I go under the theory that a wizard that can't land their spells is going to be a dead wizard. Go drow. Yes quicken reconstruct is nice but if I really need healing theres silver flame pots or ddoor. The amount of "surviveability" being warforged gives you is usually grossly overstated and the fact that you're losing 50% from normal healing others do to you, unless you blow a fair chunk of enhancements or gear spots, gets overlooked a lot too.

Thus up to personal choice. High con or high int.

If given your experience as a bard do you think your wiz wouldn't find himself in combat then go for int and save some of the 34 points to build some con on the drow's dump stat.

Wow... You argue that a wizard that can't land their spells is going to be a dead wizard, and in the same breath advocate a wizard using silver flame pots?
...
I really don't know how to respond to that.

Go warforged so much more fun to play, resistances to disease and poison. Better constiton which means better hp which wizards dont have that much. Drows might have the int higher but you can do so much more with a warforged. Persnally i like waforged. :)

Another question to ask would be, are you going to go pure wizard or do you mind splashing in a couple levels of either monk or rogue. Reason being that going drow with two levels of rogue would only bring you down to the DC level of a warforged. Combined with evasion, the ability to disarm traps thus getting you into more parties, and the ability to use wands like remove disease, neutralize poison, etc make it pretty easy to survive as a fleshy.

Or a third option is to go human for the extra feats to raise your dc's or your spell pen.

The DC difference between Drow and WF is exactly 1, beyond that Drow offers nothing and gives a non-negligable reduction in HP. WF on the other hand gives a massive survivability boost. The ability to self heal via spells in this game is a huge deal.

You likely are not going to notice the -1 DC to spells.

Having played a drow wiz/rog 18/2 and a capstone wf wiz I say go the wf route. My wiz has a 40 int and a little over 400 hp without rage. Plus with the racial immunities and self healing makes for a helluva lit of fun. With almost 2300 sp he really hasn't lost that much to his drow counterpoints.

ps. My Drow wiz/rog was TR'd into a wf sorc.

Or you know.. pick whatever race you like more and have fun with it.

Each race has its pros and cons, most or all of which have been mentioned already in this thread, but ultimately unless you for some reason dump Int and/or Con or refuse to cast spells or something, you're going to be a viable wizard and be able to contribute and have fun. Just some food for thought :)

I'm partial to human myself. Extra feat. Extra EP for Intel. My Human Wizzy should top out over 350 HP without factoring a Shroud item and any tomes beyond a +1.

Personally, I find that the benefits from going with WF and 2 levels of rogue outweigh the cost.

However, if you're choosing Human/Drow for the higher DCs, I really recommend going pure Wiz - if you're going to go for high DCs, don't lose out on the capstone.

I like Human over Drow because of the extra feat and better healing options. The Spell Resistance from being a Drow is next to worthless, while the healing amp from being Human is sweet.

Totally agree, you can get SR from items and in most high level content you get hit with Mass SR anyway.
