View Full Version : Extremely sillyness in the new dice notation

I noticed the compendium also now shows the dice notation as a range of number. To me this is completely dumb. For example:

Paladin Divine Light III
Activate this ability to deal 18 to 108 points of light damage to all nearby undead creatures. Consumes a use of your turn undead ability. (A successful DC 10 + Paladin Level + Charisma Mod Will save reduces the damage by half.)\n\nD&D Dice: Deals 18d6 light damage to undead.

So instead showing 18d6, it is showing 18 to 108. Sure, 18-108 is easier to understand, but that kind of display masked the extreme statistical impossibility of hitting the extreme ends of the range. For example, it will take on average:

6^18 = 101,559,956,668,416

rolls to hit 6 on all 18 die.

Then, assume the paladin can turn undead 30 times per rest, and rests every 5 minutes, to hit the number 108 in divine light III, it will take:

101,559,956,668,416/(30*12*24*365) = 32,204,450

YEARS to see the maximum or the minimum damage on an 18d6 roll. 32,204,450 YEARS!!

While notation like 18 to 108 seems to be friendly to players not familiar with D&D notation, soon newbies will start to ask, hey how come I never see the maximum damage in Divine Light? The answer--not until you become the undead.

Yes the new dice notation is very lame imo, and I am very unhappy about it. It really takes away one of the few elements in DDO that actually makes it DnD.

At the very least make it toggleable so that the tards that cant read dice notations have an easy-button.

It's not D&D without the dice.

See my sig.

And if you read the various statements... they are going to do this change regardless of what so many of us who go at each other back and forth with venom... we've pretty much all been in agreement.

most newbies requested the change in the first place do not read Lamannia discussions. I am hoping they read my calculations and realized they will become undead before they see the two ends of the numbers.

I agree. The team here consistently screws up. Nerfing my character I can understand to a degree. But getting rid of dice I cannot. If they are going to get rid dice roll descriptors then they need to change the name of this game and not try to link it to DnD at all. This topic actually caused me to have to make a post here something I would never bother doing otherwise. Where is Ed Green when we need him?

So we simplified it for the newbies to understand. But what about us long time DnD players that are used to thinking in terms of dice? Now when I see the "15 to 90 points of damage" I have to stop down and do math to figure out that it is 15d6. :(

I find this change extremely annoying. Yes, I will concede that it is very small in the overall scheme of things but hugely irritating.
