View Full Version : One more SHROUD rant!

The story

Last night my guild and I decided to do an elite Shroud for xp and favor. We filled about 70 percent with guildies and pugged out the rest of the spots with some very decent players. NP there. We moulinexed through the first three chapters. Easy Breezy. Than we come to Chapter four. First round goes off without a hitch. We get him down to about 50 percent. We rebuff up between rounds, clear the trash, and go in for round two. We immediately notice Harry's glitched and no one's taking damage from him. Fear grips all our hearts cause we know whats happening. All three healers and the bard begin to spam heals knowing what coming. It didn't help. One second everyone is alive, the next second everyone near Harry is dead, even though it shows everyone up and still fighting, it shows up in party chat that they were killed. Party wipe. All of us are ****ed, we go back in on normal for a speed run to make us all feel better.

/rant on

This is getting tiresome. Everyone who runs the Shroud has a story like this. Its very sad that the most challenging thing in this quest now is the dreaded Lag Monster. This is a two and half year problem that hasn't been resolved, no matter what witch doctor methods the gurus at DDO Dev have thrown at it, and still will not be resolved by the changes U5 will bring in. We have all wasted large amounts of time and resources to be continually slapped around by lag and the bottom line is ITS ALL DDO's FAULT!

Solution

As much as I hate pushing the easy button on quests, I hate wasting my time on failed quests because of lag more.
Since most of the failures due to lag happen in part 4, I suggest a compromise until DDO has fixed the lag. Remove the penalty box in part 4 and allow people to be raised. Again, I'll reiterate the statement "until DDO has fixed the lag". This will allow us too at least attempt a recovery when the Lag Monster strikes.
I think this is a fair compromise that would be simple to implement and would make the Lag a bit easier to swallow.

Thanks

Frustrating for sure, I've failed many a part 4 due to the lag monster. I'm not even sure where Turbine came up with that monster, it's not in D&D 3.5, is it 4th edition?

Seriously though, I feel your pain

Don't worry, the DPS nerf in update five will fix it.

Shure you cause lag, with your über 1 weap dmg.

Seriously only hard about shroud is fighting lag-monster. Exept maybe pugging - rofl.
And removing penalty box in part 4 would help some on completion chance.

Oh look, another rant from Saismatters how droll

Yep we all know there is lag in the shroud on parts 4 and 5. Hell our channel runs even have DPS lag on parts 1 and 2.

We also know that "for reals" Turbine is working on a solution. So please unless you have a coding solution stop pointing the finger and screaming "it's them, it's them!"

I am, Rameses!

I'll believe it when I see it. From what I've heard from peeps is that it hasn't made a difference on the test server.

The 'lag' youdescribe inthis event is NOT DPS lag. DPS lag can be significant, but rarely does it get to the point where heals refuse to go off.

THe probelm you describe has been attributed to AOE haling (ANd I assume AOE DPS as well, IE: DBF, Meteor swarm)

WHen a mass heal is thrown, each cleint must report back as "I'm here" before the heal goes off. THe Spell, in the meantime, gets Queued. WHen someone is DC'd it sometimes takes the server quite a while to realize that they are gone. During that time, Heals and damage are being queued up and have a tendency to hit in mass when the server finally realizes that they are DC'd resulting in an Instatanouse massive DPS spike and usually party wipe.

Sorry Rameses, It took me a few minutes to translate your post. I'm not familiar with your dialect of Troll! ;) JK

The problem, as I see it, is that you can recover from every chapter in the Shroud, despite the lag, except in part 4 if all the mellee's are dead sitting in the penaly box. Removing the penalty box for the time being untill they fix the lag is a fair compromise. As for pointing the finger and screaming "its them, its them" isn't that exactly what DDO has been doing for years? First its people zerging causing lag, than its Dps causing lag etc etc.

Your issue is not due to dps lag. It's due to someone going link dead and as Impact wrote the dmage queing up. Sometimes you will never even see someone disconnect with this as they reestablish their link before completely disconnecting. This issue is getting fixed with update 5. The dps lag will still be there although it does take longer to hit the threshold where dps lag begins.

I don't believe I every said DPS lag. I just said Lag. I understand that lag comes with the game in many forms and for many reasons. That I can deal with. What is frustrating to me, and I'm sure many others, is when it causes a wipe with no chance of recovery. That changes the game for me and ruins my enjoyment.

The DC-wipe is being fixed with the next mod. They are changing the mechanics so that the spells will land even with the DC. So this should be gone in a week.

The Lag Beast is like a Terrasque (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/tarrasque.htm). Turbine is currently (http://forums.ddo.com/showpost.php?p=3048303&postcount=174) working on raising its nonlethal damage total to the Lag Beast’s full normal hit points +10. We have no word on whether they will have a Wish or Miracle spell ready for that moment.

I hope so. BUUUUUUT, I'm not holding my breath. Even in that little note by the dev he says changes in POST U5. meaning it could come in a few weeks or a few years. lol.
Most of my OP was anger from last night, though I tried to calm it by offering some form of a solution. It was just so frustrating. grrrrr. lol
