BASIC RUNDOWN (http://ddowiki.com/page/Crafting)

Basically, beside the bank in the marketplace is the stone of change. You can bind items using Khyber dragonshards, making them non-tradeable, non-sellable to other players (No AHing it!), but meaning they will also never take permenant damage while being repaired (Woo!).

Using collectables you can also add a small variety of minor effects to bound items:

You don't want to bother binding or improving anything you find that isn't already bound. There are very few exceptions to this rule and no exceptions on low level gear. Anything low level you will quickly outgrow anyway and the crafting ingredients would be wasted.

wow, thats more complicated than i thought.
i've bought pure good greatsword (2d6 + 1d6 of pure good). it cost me 15k gp (which was all my saving up to a week ago).
how can i improve its dmg? is it worth improving? i'm lvl 5, which weapon should i have now? when should get a new weapon?

The Risia festival allowed adding icy touch, frost, or icy burst to a weapon.
You had to grind for coins then turn them in for a chance to get recipes and motes.
icy touch was easy to get, frost was a bit of challenge, and icy burst was difficult.
Was only usable on random gen. items, no named.

Don't know if it shall come around again but am told it should next winter.
There is hope for for other elements as well.
Reading some of the Dev "future looking" posts shows that they understand crafting to be important so expect other way to improve weapons in the future.

No, that is not worth improving. It is however a good weapon. Keep it until you find something better :)

You will be continuing to find newer/better weapons every couple levels until around L14 where it will level off until you get Greensteel. That will be your best weapon, except possibly for some Epic (L20) weapons.
