It's an old phrase. From the time when wedding cakes were kept as souvenirs, rather than eaten. You'd give your guests a slice in some sort of fancy display box for them to keep. I think they were made in such a way to last and weren't really made to be eaten.
So, you can't have your cake, meaning, keep the souvenir, and eat it too, because then you don't have it anymore.

THis wasn't me! Though I am inspired. Might make a dummy cake first (stryofoam and Foundat)

poured chocalate rocks, poured sugar Eberron below...I have the figures... Poured sugar "door" THe wedding "pillars" works... Gotta have someone going over the side...

maybe poured sugar bridges...that would be rough. maybe modeling chocolate on a copper frame... Gumpaste "wooden" planks.
