View Full Version : Why do 'new' divine casters cast BE?

I've seen for quite sometime that 'new' divine casters cast Break Enchantment alot? I've also seen this happen in a Hound run... And it was cast on the dogs...

It is an amazing way to wipe the raid.

Casting Break Enchantment in a HoX run earns a one way ticket to my DNG list.
I've no idea why people spam it, but I've seen it as well. On one run, this guy cast it on the party each time we cleared a room.

Only time I use it is to get rid of enemy Blade Barriers or pesky Obscuring Mist and during Reaver if the Stormreaver wanders into damage spells when he's getting prepped.

from http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Spell:Break_Enchantment

Affected allies in an area are freed from harmful enchantments, transmutations, and curses.

Great way to AoE decurse.

Unfortunately you need to roll extremely high to decurse, since it's 1d20 + 15. I know dispelling Suulo's curse in normal VoD for example is pretty tough - must roll at least upper teen's (dispels at a roll of 18 and fails on like 14).

The most consistent use for it is dispelling enemy AoE effects like fogs, BB's, and wall of fire. Good spell to keep on hand even if just in a scroll form.

PS: It also dispels grease in case you group with a greasemonkey...

I don't even take the spell.

... think it's a worthwhile spell so that you can get rid of AoE effects if needed.

Hey stranger! Meh... I tend to BE the wrong spell.

I've taken the Break Enchantment spell only on my FvS, and has even less usage than my Cure Moderate Wounds spell (redundant since I have Healing Word). And the only reason I took it was because there was no other worthy spell to take at Level 5.

So far, like as said already, only used it in places like the Reaver where the Reaver has run into a bunch of BB, Wall of Fire, or is going to. So had to shut them down.

One of those "last to pick" spells I feel it is. Very few situations warrant or need it.

Another reason why "New" Divine Casters might be casting Break Enchantment, is the amount of myth regarding what it can remove that people keep perpetuating. Ranging from things like Necrotic Touch, Limb-Chop, Crippled, Tendon Slice, etc. And even then, only maybe one or two only works.

Blame those giving out false information. I remember hearing a lot of it whilst I was running with my Monk. Then when I got my FvS, tried it out and virtually none of them worked.

Tendon Slice/Hamstring is a confirmed one, my sorc has BE at the moment and I used to remove it when I was doing slayers in Orchard from myself.

That must be it... I only tried it a while back - long time ago actually - and it didn't work for a lot of things then.

I use it all the time to get rid of blade barriers and the like.

Wait, my wizard has it too, right? I'm not crazy am I? Or at least not any crazier than I was already?

nah, my fvs, clerics, and wizzy all have BE for a spell. use it to dispel enemy crowd control. not a useless spell, and it has gotten to be a better spell than it was a couple years ago. its handy to have, in case of idiots in group

Won't work with Severe Hamstring though. Tried it just now on my FvS when getting some Adamantine for item crafting. Hamstring fine. But the Severe Hamstring version (which is different it seems) doesn't work.

And people don't differentiate between the two. When one person says Hamstring, many people automatically assume that Severe Hamstring and other effects like it automatically work when they don't.

People need to tell others what it can and can't do specifically or let them know not all versions.

As for enemy crowd control dispeling, agree, I use it for that too sometimes. But too often these days the people I'm with are too competent and so I hardly use it anymore :p.

Although I never used it much in the past, aside from the occasional AoE cleanup, these days it tends to come in handy for occasional mass debuff removal. Typically curses.

I use it in Hound all the time, because moron arcanes throw globes of invulnerability everywhere.

Hey look, blind accusations against entire classes goes both ways!
