Hello all,
I'm brand new to DDO and was wondering which server is best for a new player (never played DnD either) who likes to RP?
Thanks,
Forstan

Go to Thelanis. They'll love you there.

Get 50 favour on every server, and then decide.
Reasoning: You get a per server reward for reaching favour milestone
http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=197647
You get it only ONCE per server. So it will be 700 Turbine Points for getting 50 favour on each server.
Thats enough to buy something usefull like Warforged.
You get also 25 Turbine Points every 100 favour. Those can be farmed infinitely.

Yup. They're completed jaded from so many hellaciously lobotomized, supposedly graceful, Ashton Kutcher wannabes.

My home server is cannith, but i would personally avoid it, and orien. I had a brief stint on argo a couple of months ago and in 5 weeks got to level 16, its taken me the same time to get back up to level 13 on cannith. Main reason.... the AH. Its all still new on cannith and the prices are just dumb. On argo i was able to equip alot easier as there are more of the better items at more reasonable prices.
I would suggest any of the longer running servers

That actually surprises me...I would have thought the opposite because with less plat capped characters you would have less buyers at ridiculous prices driving prices lower. I also assumed newbies would be less likely to gouge other newbies or sell lower to make less but make it faster. Interesting...

to be fair i might have been a bit misleading with that. I didnt buy any uber super duper gear but things like a +4 holy great axe for 50k gp. Club of giant bane for a bit more..... I dont play there anymore as i returned to my guild but I did find it was just a bit easier to pick up some good items. On cannith I struggle to find decent weap and docents etc. I assumed it was because there would be less good loot being an excess.
I.E if you have 1000 people farming vale, for the Nth time they will probably vendor alot of their loot where as on cannith the good stuff is often worth keeping for an alt or selling on the AH for a ridiclous price.
I should of added that some stuff is just priced up by tards anyway that think they can charge 10,000,000 for...... well anything really :) There is almost nothing in the game that would take longer to farm for then it would take to farm that amount of money.... If that makes sense.....
Having said that, Im very anti AH atm. I think its dumb people trying to make lots of money in a game where the money is fake and irrelevent. I was selling taps for 1 mil gp which was half what others were selling them for. I figured it takes me about 2 hours to farm 20 taps and i reakon its too much to ask for 2+ million gp. I would of sold them for alot less.... 5-6 hundred thou except that would of encouraged greed *****s to buy it then sell it on again.
Sorry, im at risk of derailing this thread.

I would suggest hitting the server forums and look in their guild topics. They have a subforum for guilds and people usually list their guilds. Check which ones say they roleplay and talk to their members.
Like RPing but never played DnD? What, Vampire?

I've conducted a formal study on bestness and came up with the following numbers.
(in bestness units)
2.3 Argonnessen
2.3 Cannith
2.3 Ghallanda
0.8 Khyber (2.3 - 1.5 drama deduction)
2.3 Orien
2.3 Sarlona
10.8 Thelanis
Many of them are very comparable. But Thelanis is clearly the bestest.

No, you can't have your own new newbie again. Did you take care of the last one? Uh huh, that's what I thought. No more bringing in strays!

I prefer a more luck-based approach. Roll an 8 sided die, then compare the result with the numbers below to know where to go.
1. Argonnessen
2. Cannith
3. Ghallanda
4. Khyber
5. Orien
6. Sarlona
7. Thelanis
8. Roll again.
Besides, you can't get any more d&d than that.

Nope, all of my RPing experience is from MMORPGs including UO, SWG and LOTRO. Been meaning to give DDO a try for a while but finally got around to it.
can not tell you the best server as that statment is loaded. Is 1 better for number of people? one better for community? does one have less lag issues? WHO KNOWS...WHO CARES..All i can say with 100 percent confidence..ARGO offers lots of pew pew pew, tons of drama and hands down the best dang guild killer in the game...but choose for yourself :P

I play on Khyber, but it's true what they say. The drama is more than you get from any other server, probably more than all other servers combined. But I thrive on conflict and think the drama is great, which is why I stay there. Thelanis seems like the pot-smoking hippie server where people are just calm and laid back. I'd probably get bored there.
Try out all servers. It's the best advice. Play a character up to level 6. It won't tell you everything there is to know about the server, but it will give you a rough idea. And besides that, you get to learn the mechanics of the game while you do so, which will help you when you decide which of your 7 characters you actually want to play, because by then you'll probably know enough to want to re-roll.

Thanks very much for the advice guys, I will try a few of them out. But being an EU player, I may be hampered by connection speeds.
And you're right, everyone's interpretation of "the best" is different so the only way to find out is to get stuck in!

If you're an EU player, I would recommend Thelanis. We have a strong community of EU players here, across several guilds formed from Devourer / Keeper refugees.
Theres also a lot of kiwis/aussies about, so seldom quiet times online :)

That's very different than Sarlona. In addition to our North Americans players, we have lots of people from (in order by population) China, Australia, and Europe. Who you group with around the world depends greatly upon what time of day you decide to play.
OP:
Sarlona is the best server, because you can learn Chinese and play DDO at the same time! (You'd be astounded at how much Mandarin I've learned by PUGing.)
