If a new character (not me this time :D) was seeking advice on good gear for a The Font Of Healing build. If I told him/her that the best devotion/power items would be great for that build and happened to say something like Turn Undead is useless. Knowing that this is a brand NEW player and probably doesnt have any thing special unlocked, unless they bought it in the store, am I wrong for telling the formentioned player that Turning undead is useless for them?

The reason I'm asking is because I understand that it does have its usefulness to certain players, more so for those that know what they are doing and can specialize in a turning build, but immediately I was getting spam'd by a player about how I was wrong and that I should stop spreading false information. This then led of course into the guy telling me he is TR'd and how superb turning is, and boasted of solo'ing quests with his cleric (Who would of thought? O.o). I tried explaining to the guy the difference between I eventually stoped responding when this person started calling me ignorant and how I was entertaining him.

So I'm curious on the communities stand point on this situation and would also like to know if I am as ignorant as this person would like to believe I am.

From everything I've seen or read Turn Undead after level 5 or so is completely useless. This may change however after the next update. I don't personally use it.

Th biggest use for your Turn Undead attempts, is the fact that they are also the number of DV's you can do... =)

I thought Turn Undead was useful in the beginning because I use to play Ragnarok Online and there was a skill called Sanctuary where a 9x9 area was filled with Holy Energy and undead get damage by being in it. But in DDO the skill is practically useless because of a multitude of reasons. So, you're right in telling that player that Turn Undead is useless. Even with the update, it's still useless, IMO. I usually just use CometFall/Blade Barrier to get rid of undead instead of trying to 'Turn' them when that requires a DC check too.

A high charisma cleric with spell and item buffs can turn undead effectively until about level 8 against certain undead. At that level usually the spellcasters though as the rest have too many hitdice.

You can keep "fearing" them for several levels after that but that's just annoying.

in update 5 since undeads will not move when turned, and with radiant servant boost to it, plus sacred gear, the spell to boost it, correct enhancements, turn undead will easily work all the way up.

However, its simply a waste of turn undead attempts, since now you can use them for DI and DV, and in Update 5 the healing aura is simply CRAZY good, and the positive energy burst heals for a ton -and- can deal upward to 1500+ damage to undeads on a crit.

Why go for a chance at turning when you can "hit their weak spot for MASSIVE damage" instead, while healing your party to full and removing level drains and stat downs =P

(And again, if we're talking about live server right now, its DV all the way)

DVs are somewhat useful, and those are based on turn undead attempts.

After update 5, the new Cleric PrE makes use of them by allowing you to heal with them, as well as casting a healing aura on you that constantly regens your health and anyone around you at a rate of about 30/2-3 seconds at level 20.
