Running through the Vale the other night on my sorcerer I found alot of the time it was needless for me to cast on trash mobs in which the rest of the party took out with fairly enough ease. It just seemed a waste unless we were hitting a rare or encountering a mob. So I switched to a paralyzing weapon (not having any banishing weapons outside a crossbow on person as I am not much of a crossbow person.)
I wasn't doing tremendous damage but I was able to keep alot of creatures paralyzed for the others to take care of. Coming back from the shrine alone one time I found using paralyzers and firewalls make a great combination.
I just got sick of running around waiting for a good time to cast. Doing so little damage never drew aggro, plus the paralyzing effect was not hindered by DR.
Sometimes on other characters with low strength..(I experimented alot at first having ten slots and multiple servers available) I have used two handed weapons to get the most oomph out of my attacks...Falchions on elves, Greataxes on Dwarves etc. with the whole purpose of trying to get as little negation from enemy DR as I could with each of my attacks. So for like a cleric I would switch from a casting set of weapons/shield, to my melee weapons.
Of course you always have the ranged option.
I only am posting this because I see alot of casters sitting around waiting for the right time to cast, seemingly having nothing else to do. These aren't new ideas I am sure, but there are newer players who need to feel more active then just feeling the need to occasionally cast at trash mobs to seem like they are doing something wasting sp that could be better used later.
Just tell your party "I am trying to conserve mana, so I switched to this effect weapon to help pitch in", when their eyes get big and see the wizard jumping into melee with his quarterstaff. Also remind them it is a very slim chance you will draw any aggro.
