So, as the title states, I'm new to this game. Never played DDO before, this is my first time playing. I have actually played a LITTLE bit Neverwinter Nights, which is similar to this game, but not an MMORPG. I have kind of figured this game out, but not really :( I really don't understand the dice roll damage thing, but hopefully I really won't need to know that. I don't really know what to do right now besides quests, just killing things :) I haven't used any skills or feats or anything, basically because I don't have any... I would appreciate help if anyone would be willing too.
My IGN is Finnick, and I'm on the world Thelanis.

Welcome to DDO!
This is a good place to start: http://ddowiki.com/page/Newbie_guide
I'm also on Thelanis, so look me up if you have questions from time to time. (voidblood, dustblood, puddingblood).

Understanding the dice roll is not critical to understanding the game. What the dice roll does is add some randomness to the amount of damage done and whether or not you actually hit. Here is a shallow and brief rundown of it however.
In order to damage an enemy when you attack you roll 1 20 sided die (1d20) and add some bonuses to see if you pass their armor class (AC). If you do then you roll what the damage of the weapon is (say for example 1d3+3) This gives you a base damage of 4-6 points of damage. If the weapon has effects that are not crit requiring those are rolled and added as well. If the enemy is weak to something (say fire) I believe the damage done is multiplied by 1.5 but could be wrong.
If you roll a Critical (each spell and weapon is different usually somewhere between 17-20 on your hit roll) and you roll high enough to confirm the critical then the damage is increased by the amount. Some weapons are x2, x3, etc.

In the Pen and Paper version of Dungeons and dragons there are 6 standard dice with different number of faces.
http://foreveranoob.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/dice.jpg
The 6 dice have the following number of sides: 4,6,8,10,12,20.
If something says 1d6 for damage, it means you would roll 1 DIE 6, meaning roll one standard 6 sided die and take the result.
If you were going to roll 1d12 you would roll 1x 12 sided die and take the result.
If the dice roll calls for 3d6+1d6 per 2 caster levels, and the caster is level 8, you would roll 3x 6 sided dice +4x 6 sided dice for a total of 7x 6sided dice, giving a possible result of 7-42.
3d10, you would roll 3x 10 sided dice for a possible result of 3-30.
It is pretty basic one you learn the concept.

Bwahahaha! Does anyone else find this beautifully ironic? :D
Sorry. I'm not laughing at you, Wolfy. Inside joke. Sort of.
Welcome to DDO and Thelanis, where the butterflies are always beautiful. :)

Welcome to DDO.
You may be new but you're off to a good start. Coming to the forums is the best way to learn some of the finer points of the game or find other resources to help you out. As has already been suggested, check out ddowiki.com. The Compendium here (see navigation bar at top if you haven't already found it) also has some useful info.
There are lots of great suggestions for character builds in the forums. Or if you can't find what you're looking for, do what you've already done and post a question. Lots of the vets here are more than happy to help out (and most seem very happy to help newbs actively looking for advice rather than newbs assuming they know everything after leaving Korthos).
Lastly, don't be afraid to find groups. From time to time I see postings by new people saying they don't want to group until level x or something. This game is made for grouping. You'll level faster and it probably the quickest way to learn the game mechanics, combat tactics and quests.
Enjoy!
