So i downloaded the client the other day and rolled a character on Khyber just to get a feel for DDO.
I only did the first quest but I already got a good feeling and can see i'll enjoy DDO quite a lot.

Before I really get stuck in playing my character. I want to pick the right server to advance on.

So help me pick a good server please :D ?
Any South Africans playing ddo?
Is there a way to ping all the servers to find the one with the lowest latency?
(currently i get ~350 on Khyber-which is playable but every little bit counts-)
which is the youngest server?
Are there any major differences between servers?
Any good tips to reduce lag? (read the post about the algorithm -might give that a try-)

Cool well those are a few questions. Any help would be appreciated to aid me on choosing a server! :)

For lag reducement when you log in on the server before you select youre character use options and there shiuld be troubleshoot. There reduce frame rate and adjust connection speed.

Hallo Welkom

I can't answer your questions but would offer the suggestion to list the times you will be playing in EST.
The server most active during the peak hours in South Africa would probably have the greatest chance of having fellow South Africans. A consolation, even if you didn't find anyone, would be an active server of people in your time-zone.

Geniet dit.

Wow, spiel jy rerig from SA? Phillymiket is reg oor spieltyde.

That's it, my Afrix is too bad, kinda in the ubersuck category. :p ;) Anyway, if I were you, I'd look around for guilds with a profile you like the sound of, and that are active when you are. It sounds like you're already doing stuff on Khyber, so check their guilds out. As to which servers are best, it's probably subjective. Latency might be better on lower pop servers. I get the feeling that Thelanis is the highest pop server, but Sarlona and Khyber could be close behind, not sure. Check out their respective server forums to get an idea of what their communities are like.

If DDO is really being played from Africa now, I'm totally blown away. :D :)

Best of luck,

Sharz

thanks for all the replies guys! :)

Gave me some good tips, I might just go to Thelanis since so far it seams to have a small South African contingent there :) (4's a crowd?)
But before i make the move there i'll also check out guilds and see their playing times.

Nano, Nice to see a couple of Africans here i rate there are probably even more we don't know of :)

keep the tips coming!

Jy kan met DDO spiel en kyk na die tv om die Wereld Beker te sien.

As a former banana boy come gautengaleng, come to Thelanis.
Loads of Euros on here as well so grouping not an issue.

If you from CPT then stick to Khyber, that's the drama server :D

Welcome aboard bro, and good to see the other SA ppls around. Where you all been? And why weren't you at Icon this year?

Haha, Rasczak if Khyber players are anything like cape town drivers I'm gonna stay away from Khyber or else there might be serious cases of rage :P

cool, looks like Thelanis is the way to go

My afrikaans is baie sleg want eks a soutie :P maar ek verstaan wat mense praat :)

South Africans post your IGN's here :)

Means: Wow, do you really play from South Africa? Phillymiket is right about the playtimes.

A better way to say it would be: Jinne, spiel jy al die pad van Suid Afrika? En ja, Phillymiket is reg oor die spieltye.

And no I'm not afrikaans, I just have to speak the language to get my money out of clients ;)

Thanks for the translation.

And again you'll find a very friendly, polite.....wait, you did say you'll stay off of Khyber, right? :D....friendly, polite group of players from all over the globe. Good to have one more.

There are more, even my wife plays :P We are VIP too.

Just find a Largely European guild and you have playtimes right.

350 is about the latency to expect and it's totally playable at that. DO NOT set your connection speed, in RAIDS this will kill you with uber uber lag.

South Africans post your IGN's here :)

no comment on the driving :p Might cause some rage quitting and hairstyle changing......*they're very sensitive* ;)

Your latency will be fine if you cabled, you'll struggle with 3G on stormy nights. I have however played on 3G for the last year on US and 3 1/2 years on Euro servers and there's no hassle. I have never had any problems except for slight rubberbanding but that's the whole server. When a brazillian, swede and Californian all complain of it at the same time, it's not my distance that's the problem :D

Easier to just check this out for my alts.
Rasczak's Gimp Parade (http://my.ddo.com/rasczak/)

Hit me up tonight at about 8pm and I'll set something up if you done with the tutorial. You're going to have to do that again though if you join Thelanis. Send me a tell ingame

that would be typing out;
/tell <CHARACTER NAME> I'm the gimp from SA

Come come razza you're a fox:p
conas a raibh a fhios agat? :p

Indeed we play from Africa, Online gaming is not that popular here but there are some that do.

Most South African playing an MMO in place i have seen was when i was playing WoW my guild consisted of about 20 south African and its always easier to relate to people with a similar culture.

But yes whatever you decide enjoy your stay with DDO it is an awesome game.

South African here - playing on the Sarlonia server - average ping times for me around 250ms (experience may vary based on your internet package)

Does not look like anyone said it yet.. but for latency, it does not matter what server you pick. They are all located in the same place.

True. And that place is near Boston, Massachusetts USA, yeah?

Yup! I'm a mind-reader!

Who'd have thunk there'd be so many SA people popping up. :p I'm actually originally from Zimbabwe - Dad was Zimbabwean, mum from Europe, though I spent a few years in SA (daughter was born there) - I'm in a family of gypsies.

Anyway, wherever the OP ends up, I hope he has fun. :) The servers end up being quite a melting pot, especially late night here in the US. There are lots of great people in DDO, so I say enjoy the community and make friends. :D ;) :) :p

I joined Thelanis and my IGN is PapaGoa
I'm building a battle cleric since I hear they are pretty good at solo play and relatively noob friendly so far really enjoying the game and I found a party last night to do two of the starter dungeons on elite which was cool :) at the moment I'm exploring the ruins and I quite like the targets they set out for you.

On a South African topic: we drew to mexico today :( but it was sooo close!
When we scored the first goal I went outside and I could hear vuvuzela's (plastic trumpets) from everywhere!

Matches are, 13:30 - 15:30 (latest), 16:30 - 18:30 (latest) & 20:30 - 22:30 (latest)

I have to do something inbetween and in the morning ;) Plus all matches on a day are seperate cities, so out of 24 hours, 2 hours are a match here by me unless I'm lucky enough to have them play Coca-Cola Dome and Soccer City on the same day ;)

And the draw was good, SA's goal was World Class....but their defence is like a dwarven barbarian wearing paper towels......They need to get over nerves and sort their stuff out. Lucas Radebe is wishing he was still playing I bet to smack some sense into them :D
