View Full Version : Are the pre-set paths any good?

I've only been playing for a few weeks, and I'm new to MMOs in general (Diablo II and Conquer Online don't count :P) I've been playing a Warforged Fighter so far, and he's on the Vanguard Warrior path, so I'm really not customizing or choosing anything myself. Mainly because I'm scared I'll screw up my build :P
Is there a good chance I'll regret sticking with the pre-set path at high level? And is there a way to re-do my build without starting over? (I know there's a way to reset enhancements, but I'm not sure about the whole build.)
My main goals for now are leveling and getting more favor so that I can make 32bp characters as soon as possible. I'll have to know what I'm doing with build-related stuff before then, though. I've been reading some of the stickied threads, but...it's a lot of info all at once O_O

I would recommend Tihocan's updated path (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=232660) thread. The path for the Vanguard Warrior is here (http://forums.ddo.com/showpost.php?p=2801751&postcount=17). The premade paths Turbine created are mostly lackluster to bad. Welcome to DDO.

The preset paths are decent for beginning the game, but I strongly urge you before you get past level 5 on any character learn how to create a custom character or use tihocans revisted builds, the link was posted above this post.

Note that the Vanguard Warrior path is not that bad. There are a few feats wasted, but on a Fighter it's not such a big deal. So you shouldn't need to reroll (you can follow the link above for some suggestions on how to modify the feat progression).

Worse case scenario eventually you want to customize the toon and you end up reincarnating, whether you wait to level 20 and true reincarnate or maybe do a lesser or greater reincarnation somewhere along the way. As a new player the paths are not the worst choice, they can be helpful for some, especially those who don't know anyone who can help them plan their character level by level or explain what is most useful. I had my boyfriend to help me learn from my mistakes but I also re-rolled a lot of toons over the past two years and I've learned the most from the trials and errors.
You'll do fine on the preset path while you learn the ropes, especially if your goal is to get enough favor for your 32 pt build.

Thanks for the replies everyone...and for that link :D
My char is lvl 7 now, so he should still be salvageable if I get off the pre-set path. I'm glad to know he won't be TOO screwed up!

The paths will make you very meh in the end. You won't suck, but you will definitely be less than optimal. (Though in some people's eyes, anything less than optimal is gimped.) They are great when you just want to start playing and will come back on the second or third try to actually build yourself.
