Suppose you have a Sorcerer 6/Bard 3, and you're casting Charm Person, which is available to both classes. Will your caster level be 9 in this case, or just 6?
And just out of curiosity, what's the pen-and-paper rule for this scenario?

The PnP rule aswell as the mechanic in DDO is that you get the caster level of the class you prepared the spell from. If it's a slot from bard you'd get the bard caster level. If it's from your sorcerer spell slot you get the sorcerer caster level. The reason for this is that if you are a multiclassed caster you can't cast spells at the same level as a pure class of your character level, so you don't get the same caster level.

WHat he said, so no. Caster levels mean THAT CLASS'S caster level. This is why most vets will warn newer players not to multiclass casters. THey lose power for every level of multiclass. As a general rule, 2 levels of another class is as far as you should go.

Where it is easy to get confused is that many items have a CHARACTER level minimum and for those purposes you would be 6+3= 9th level.
You either cast spells as a 6th level Sorc or a 3rd level Bard.
Both Spell Point pools do combine into one blue bar.

See this is why someone should shoot over to suggestions and put in for the feat: Practiced SpellCaster.
Its a good feat:
Practiced Spellcaster: When casting Spells you get plus four to your caster level, not to exceed your hit dice.
Thats not exactly the right wording, but you get the idea. In that above scenario he could take it for Sorcerer spells, and make his sorc spells all at full strength, though his selection would remain the same, SP the same and such.

And I take it you can't learn the same spell from both classes.
Ok, thanks for the specification.

I suppose you can get the spell twice from different classes, but that doesn't matter, because taking levels from multiple spellcasting classes is a mistake.
(It is a little bit defensible to have Sor19/Bard1 or Sorc19/Wiz1, but not really)

You probably can, but they will be in different spell slots. That's why I specified it the way I did. If you can learn it from both you'd have two different versions of it to put on your hotbar. The one you click is the one you get caster level for.

If you are going to plan on casting DC type spells...don't multi-class...very bad idea.

You also cannot take the same enhancement type from different classes. So you if you took a fire enhancement from sorc you could not take the fire enhancement from wiz.
If caster enhancements could stack it would make for better multiclass options.

Suppose you have a Sorcerer 6/Bard 3....
Then you are in dire need ot a +3 lesser reincarnation....
Deeper Multiclassing casters is a 99.99% way to a utterly trash character in the level 10+. Its a beginners-trap.
