View Full Version : Is ranger a good class to play if I'm going to be playing w/ no purchased content?

Seems like another run-of-the-mill question most likely but I'm just curious and wanted to make a post while checking out the game's forums. I'm planning on not spending any money on this game and want to level up a ranger and I'm just curious as to how they normally do w/ no extra content. I ask this because I've read a thread on how monks are tough to level around 10 with no purchased content and I'm curious. Thanks guys

Purchased content and classes are mutually exclusive (well, one exception). Every type of class needs purchased content or they can't level efficiently. They'll hit at wall at about 11 or 12.

*The exception would be that monks without devils of shavarath are missing a ton of their good gear.

lame. I should have known there'd be a catch. How much money do you think would be spent to efficiently level to 20?

Another choice is to farm TP if u think u can and will spend so much time instead

u can gain 25 TP per 100 favor for all characters on all server
with TP theoretically you can purchase all things from turbine...
but of coz this is only theorectic, as u probably need several toons all doing F2P elite quests until u farm enough favor

What catch? There is no catch. You can play as much as you want for free, hence "free to play." They didn't mention anywhere that you would get all content or access to the best gear without buying anything.

However, before you start complaining too much about "catches," you should know that if you really are dead-set about getting to level 20 and having the best gear, you can do it without actually contributing any money what-so-ever to keeping our game going.

All you have to do is grind out TP. You can find alot of links on how to "get over on the man" or just leech off of all the other players that will be contributing money to keep the game alive while you save your $15.00/month (VIP) or however much you'd spend for TP (Premium) through the store.

Don't worry though, we enjoy this game, so we'll be more than happy to keep it going for you. Have a nice day.

BTW, I was trying to be as straight-forward as I could, didn't want you to think I was trying to get over on you with a "catch" or anything.

I'm a Premium player myself, and I feel that it's just like buying expansion packs for any other MMO, except I choose what my "expansions" will be and then play them without a monthly fee.

Still, the option to grind out everything you want for free is there if you're willing to invest the time, OP.You can wait a while before you make a purchase, and it really is worthwhile as you'll expand your account amenities.

Going to repost from http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=199945 ...

I recommend buying the following packs:

If you are on a tight budget:
Delara's Tomb OR Tangleroot Gorge (one or the other, don't grab both, Delara's will get you to level 20 faster but IMO TR is more fun)
Demon Sands OR Gianthold
Vale of Twilight
Devils of Shavarath OR Reaver's Reach

You can quite reasonably buy these packs one per fortnight if a semi-frequent player, or once per month if an occasional player, keeping costs down.

Regarding the above post, that is exactly right. Also, look for sales.

Adventure Packs go on sales ALL the time. Stay away from Devil Assault though ;)

If you like the first few minutes and few hours into the game,, earn a real income and have means to pay for things,, the question becomes' Do I like the idea of financially supporting the game and it's supporting company enough to use my hard earned money to obtain character advancing items?" In all honesty this game is quality enough to be worth spending real money on, and furthermore, it would be beneficial to play in free mode to experiment with character abilities and types before chosing to spend money on items....

To clarify, you can get to level 20, access every AP and major perk in the game without paying a penny, but it's going to be the mother of all grinds. Where on the cash-convenience tradeoff line you fall is entirely your call.

Okay didn't mean to set off the defenders of turbine with saying it had a catch, my bad. I'll play it in free mode and then if i like it I'll pay monthly or pay for items.

Don't misunderstand what I at least was saying. If you don't want to pay to play, thats fine, don't. Just don't complain when you don't get the "perks" that come with buying TP bundles or subscribing. It's not people that don't pay anything to play that get most of us in a mood, its those people that refuse to pay that complain when they don't get everything handed to them.

If you are patient, and know how to favor farm efficiently (which there are plenty of guides to help you with), you can unlock 100% of the content in this game without ever spending a dime. And you don't need 100% of content to make it to 20. Save the TPs you earn from questing and spend them on higher level adventure packs when you get to the point where there are a dearth of free quests. I'd say the hard cut-off for totally free content is level 14. After that point you really don't have anything to do. So save your free points until you get there then purchase some high-level packs. Chances are by that time you'll have enough points to buy at least one or two.

But if you really like the game, support it by paying for it. You don't have to subscribe. Turbine's free-to-play model lets you choose your own level of involvement. Just spending $50 (which is not unreasonable for a video game) will get you access to loads of bonus content. The free-to-play aspect of this game is superior to any other free-to-play MMO on the market, but that doesn't mean that it is all there is to the game.

Turbine has steadily been releasing more F2P mid level content. There is still a small void in the 10-15 range, though, that they havent really put much into (or left much in when they went F2P). By the time you get there, you should be able to buy at least one mid pack with the TP you have earned through favor across a few characters.

The only thing is, Turbine is a business. That means that most of the good equipment that is prized by players will still be locked inside of premium content, no matter what content Turbine later releases. Thats just the way it is.
