How does this work exactly. For instance will my cleric/ fighter 9/1 with fighter taken at the characters first level be able to swap out for better fighter feats at later character levels or will he always be stuck with the selection he had as the first level of fighter/character.
The reason I ask is that I read somewhere a while ago (searching so far hasnt found the thread) if I left my one level of fighter splash until 12th or 13th character lvl level he would have a better feat to select. Wont I be able to swap to that feat anyway when my character gets there?

You can swap feats out later, but you need to fulfill the prereqs of the new feat, at the character level that you want to swap it in. So you can swap out Power Attack at 1st fighter level, but you cant swap in Improved Crit into the old Power Attack slot, as you didnt have BAB 8 at 1st level.
So basically you can only swap to the other feats you could have taken then normally.

It may be, but this prevents you from overloading your toon with high level feats when you shouldn't.

It depends on how you look at getting the high level feats at the character level you should get them at. I didnt want improved crit at first level I just wanted the option of swapping for it when I hit the character level I can get it at when taking just one level of fighter.

Exactly! You have to plan your build appropriately. Fighter can be splashed at any time. Rogue should be splashed right away if you are going for UMD. Other classes can be splashed whenever, as well I believe. Those are my rules when it comes to building a toon. I always plan it out all the way before I start leveling.

I planned my build using the character builder and got what I wanted at the time and what I wanted for future levels except this feat swap. I always wanted my fighter earlier so it would help me earlier. Even if I knew for a fact when I planned my build sall the nuances of the feat system it would be the same build and I would still think it unfair.
Im ditching fighting for offensive caster at later levels and my build allows for that. At the levels improved crit would come at Im going to turn to blade barrier as my main offensive. That doesnt mean I think it makes sense to not let me swap out at later levels what I can get then anyway. Improved crit would just make me more effective fighting through my blade barrier. Too powerful you say? I dont think so and the game is less fair and equal in other areas. Btw its my 10th level cleric/ 1 fighter Im talking about. His earlier build served him well and soon he will have the BB and that new build wil serve him well too.

Cudgo Cleric 10 Fighter 1 TR
Axefist Barbarian lvl 20
Cudge Rogue lvl 15
How did you make it to 3 high level characters, including a L11 TR without understanding how feats work?

A lot of learning DDO is like a lot of things in life. learning through experience. Sometimes with a certain mindset a person comes to assume things even when he is old enough to know better (everyone I have ever known ever does it) and there is a lot to the game that isn't clear, plus often a person may not think about a certain thing until he has to.
In this case my first 3 builds were all pure and so the issue of taking a level earlier or later affecting feats in the way it does never came up until I did my level of fighter for my first toon with a splash. Up to that time it seemed to me the feat system was straightforward, at a character level the toon gets the feats his class and race pick at that level and I knew splashes of fighter in a build could get improved crit. Then when I read further into it it appeared not to be straightforward but I wasn't 100 % sure.
There was nothing clarifying this in the wiki or elsewhere I could find. It wasn't a shock to find what I suspected was in fact right just that I wanted it confirmed and I don't agree with how this part of the system works. I don't see it being overpowering anymore than if I had waited until level 12 to splash one level of fighter as the end result would be the same ie. A cleric/fighter 11/1 fighting using a dwarven axe with improved crit and casting blade barrier.
Like I said though the ultimate reason for taking a splash of fighter was to get me through the early levels more easily (better solo option) until the cleric got some decent offensive spells.
