No, that will only encourage them to pester you some more since they would then know that you're an easy mark.

Mail it to them a copper at a time. If that doesn't annoy them into leaving you alone I don't know what will...

Maybe he was testing you.. if you had been a kind soul and given him 100 plat, he would have rewarded you with humongous piles of treasure. Maybe.

Actually I had some guy pm me the same thing today, but I told him that I had no money because a rogue stole all my plat

I have been getting tons of those tells lately and also blind invites when I am on my higher toons from lowbie, unguilded strangers. Maybe they are trying to encourage Turbine to add a new class to the game but IDK :D

Why not? It's only 100 plat.
Give it to him and he leaves you alone and is grateful? Possibly even gives you something in return.
Or give it to him and he starts being a jerk? Quelch.
It's only 100 plat....

Nigerian treasure, from that deceased uncle you never knew about.
The OP's name is one of the gods of war from EQ - a name used for one of the greatest PVP servers of all time. Would it be considered roleplaying to ask said noobie to come to the tavern to receive their 100 plat?
I had your 100 plat, but I gave it to the orcs who asked for it earlier. They are in Cerulean Hills. I gave each orc .5 plat, so you will only need to ask 200 of them nicely each for their share. :p

Agree with the give 100 plat.
If the tells come more often afterwards, just squelch.
But, what's a one time - 100 plat?
It's not like they will amasse millions this way, and you never know what may come back to you.
I gave a large devil scale to someone that I barely knew one time in the shroud so they could craft, and they became a very good friend afterwards, and paid me back 10X in other kinds of loot and friendship.

I don't give to the beggers. I give to people trying to improve but come up short. Or totally random people. Or clerics. I have a soft spot for clerics.

People you don't see the problem you are supporting.
I remember the last time I gave someone 100pp. Took weeks to heal. Not one Cleric/FVS/Pal/Ranger could hellp me out. Even the silver flame laughed and said "thats what you get sinner". NEVER AGAIN!

For Pete's sake, if you're going to feed them, at least potty train them and teach them some manners.

Right - Below is what you are supporting, in many cases.
On Sarlona the Bank of China operates in full force, right out in the open. Plat farmers galore. They send you scripted tells with the name Bank of China right in them. They also send scripted tells asking for plat, with the same name in it. Squelch does nothing as they create a new FTP toons when needed. Curse and swear at them, and they will report you and you will be disciplined for it. Report them = no real result. The plat farmer traffic doesnt go down.
I doubt the occasional fr00b who needs in game money compares to this. Most players who have been subject to this for a while now just internally produce a chemical that causes them to ignore scripted tells.

Nobody has yet mentioned that you are being asked for plat IN THE INSPIRED QUARTER.
Perhaps the dude was writing you the message from the harbour and pressed send as you zoned in, but c'mon. If this dude was standing in the IQ, tell him to go farm some Jeet's Mind and leave you the **** alone.

Money farmers have been in every game I've played since Ultima Online. Looks like they are reverting to old tactics.
No Deal! If I run a quest with someone and they are trying at the game, I will give without question.
P.S. I love Beagles
I do not explictly give plat to those asking for them.
If they are however trying to buy something which I have spares of, I do sometimes decide to give it away.

I am need 100 plat for adminstrative fees to move large amount of cash from Amrath to bank of Sarlona through Thelanis courier.
If you forward 100 plat and your account login id and password, I return 10% of large ingredients and at least one eardweller from deposed king of Nigeria.

It all started with a simple plea, "Gimme 100 plat". How could I refuse, it was such a meager amount, and the PC looked like he needed it. In time, more and more people caught on, suddenly the occasionly plea for help was replaced with people standing on every corner of the Harbor/Marketplace with signs saying "will kill for food", "PC vet down on luck, please help", and "Homeless, Guildless, and a newb, need money for weapons". A few like the infamous Nat Gann were really in need, but others were just lazy. Why adventure when someone else can take all the risks while you reap the rewards?
Now we have escalated even futher, with many unable to cover healing and repair bills, the Coin Lords have initiated a health reform. Now no matter how badly skilled of an adventurer, they no longer fear death, for we shall pay their bills for them.

Whenever I am begged for money, I tend to reply something along the lines of:
Sure, I have some spare money for you! Unfortunately, I left it behind in the last dungeon I was in [insert name of level appropriate dungeon], you'll have to pick it up! I don't think I killed everything though, you might have to fight a few things to get it back...

Holy knee jerk reactions, Batman!
In all these responses, not a single person has asked the simple question, Why?
I guess I'm one of those guys who likes to give people a shot, or perhaps I just like to **ck with people. But, when I get something like that, I'll respond with, "Why?". Maybe, its one of your friends on an alt and he doesn't realize you don't know him by this new name, and he is 100 plat short of an auction item he wants. Unlikely, but you never know.
Now, I'll admit, (in RL overseas) and in game, I''ll let someone "scam" me slightly, if I can get a good story out of it. Here are some possible outcomes and my actions to certain responses:
E-beggar: to buy some dwarven porn.
Me: alright, here's 1,000 plat, go nuts.
E-beggar: I want to join a group and the guy told me I need 100 plat to join groups.
Me: That guy is lying to you. (INVITE BEGGAR). How about I run you through a few quests and show you how to get some plat the old fashioned way. (After running Durk's or whatever, if beggar is new but just trying to have fun, probably hook him up with something useful, like 100 CLW pots for a melee, or a wand or two for a caster).
E-Beggar: Because I don't have any plat and you probably have a lot.
Me: /Squelch
Nine out of ten times, the guy won't even respond, or he'll give you some lame excuse and they end up being schelched. But, every once in a while, it works out.

i've never asked for gold, plat, or anything else..however, one of the coolest things ever happened to me here in DDO is one day, i gave away some lowbie gear. (nothing all that great...) One of the people i gave something to, sent me a tell saying "thanks for the "whateveritwas". I have a gift for you. I said was unnecessary but they insisted. Well, ok. Turns out, that person had higher lvl toons and had a very nice +5 full plate that they gave to me. (i wasn't even high enough lvl to use it yet!) it made my day!
My point is..being generous sometimes is rewarding. If you have a zillion plat, will you really miss 100? *shrugs*
My thinking is, if they are polite and not hounding me, why not? it's just play money anyway. But then, i'm the owner of Chopstix, who has been known to give away tons of stuff worth way more than 100plat.
You know...karma.

No. I'm getting really ****ing tired of people pestering me for gold, items, dragon scales...
These aren't people begging for food, they aren't homeless, they're ****ing playing a video game! **** 'em!
And this from someone who routinely donates all sorts of stuff to new players--I just can't stand this bull.

It sounds to me like you have gone "Bleeding heart liberal" on us Flabby; running quests with newbies and doling out your ill-gotten gains like some sort of creepy philanthropist. Your answer should have included conjuring up server admin powers to round up as many of these filthy hobos as possible and placing them in a private instance on Korthos island. After this is done, Velah would nuke Korthos from orbit with a breath weapon that autodeletes all the beggers inside of it.
P.S. Beagles are not as cool as pugs (I mean the dogs, not the players).

Its just like the age-old quote: "If you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day..."
...and the next day he'll ask for another...
I don't even give money to the homeless people when they ask for a quarter. They can earn their own fish.

I don't think the comparison is reasonable. Sometimes, in the real world, **** happens, and you can't earn for yourself. Certainly the downturn our economy has taken in the last few years has shown just how susceptible everyone is to finding themselves without ____, but this is a game. Your not having money here has no greater bearing on your health, your actual survival. If you can play the game you can just as easily acquire gold--it is a totally separate type of experience.

It's "give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day..."
;)
As for the beggars - I tell them I don't give out money, but that it's easy to get by making sure you break everything in quests.
I do give away plenty of stuff, but normally to people I know or group with, or via games of chance.
