Hypnosis vs Hypnotic Pattern

I would like to seek the advice of vet sorcs. What is the difference between Hypnotism & Hypnotic Pattern? The information I can find at the moment are as follows:

Hypnotism
Spell Points: 10
Components: S, V
Range: Close 25ft + 5ft / 2 lvls
Effect: 2D4 HD
Spell Resistance: Yes
Save: Will

Hypnotic Pattern
Spell Points: 15
Components: M, S
Range: Medium 100ft + 10ft / lvl
Effect: 2D4 + lvl HD
Spell Resistance: No
Save: Will

Do note that I'm not asking about the merits of taking either of these spells versus other spells (e.g. Charm or Scorching Ray etc), just the difference between them...

also pattern tends to block the view of players too thus its not much used

The current version of Hypnotic Pattern is horrible.

The old version was good IMO. Annoying graphics, but powerful spell.

They nerfed the duration to what I consider completely useless now. At least compared to Hypnotism. And Hypnotic Pattern is a higher lvl spell.

Really wish they would fix this one.

It's sole purpose is to annoy your party members with it's crazy colors.

Or perhaps please them if there on certain .. "medication"

Looked on my Wiz 19...then went to look on Scrolls.

Hypno is the same on both. 8 sec - 1 min 20 sec. So it must be a random roll when cast.

It's imprtant to note that Hypno is targeted, and affects things in the area immediately when cast.

Hynotic Pattern is apparently duration dependant on lvl.

My Wiz19 it says 29 secs. The scroll says 6 secs (lvl 3)
Extend does work on it though. With extend on my Wiz 19 it says 58 Secs.

But Hypnotic pattern is cast at an area and requires you to catch the mobs trying to pass through that spot.

I suppose it has some uses at high lvl, but by the time the duration is enough to be useful IMO, you have other spells that seem more effective.

Hmmm... I guess Hypno Pattern's AoE can also be cast at a bunch of stationary targets and so offers a slight bit more flexibility. But given its duration, it seems Hypno is actually more practically useful.

Quite silly, since Hypno Pattern needs more SPs and needs component ($). They should adjust this.

The only advantage seems to be that Hypno Pattern can affect around twice as many HD of monsters:

Hypno = 2D4 = 2 to 8
Hypno Pattern = 2D4 + Lvl = 6 to 12
