I'm brand new to DDO and looking for advice.

Hi everyone. I'm brand new to ddo and plan to roll my first character soon. I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations on which server might be best for me and also I would like to join up with like-minded players since that's part of the fun also so if any one has any suggestions on a guild to join that would be great as well.

Im a 30 something old school dnd player since jr. high school although I havn't played for a couple of years (since 3.5 ed) and am looking to recapture some of that sitting around the table with friends feel I used to enjoy so much with pnp d&d. So a freindly server and a newbie friendly guild that like to take things slow would probably be a good thing for me.

Also, if anyone has a recomendations on a fun
Ist character class build, I'd love to read your opinion (I really enjoy reading players favorite builds) Any other advice is always welcome too.

Well, the servers don't matter, go anywhere and ask about what server to choose and the answer is the same. Although Khyber has more of a population then the others but that too is a small margin, I would try them out and roll alts on them and find out the best one for you.

Ok, now when it comes to guilds, there's a wide variety of those and most are as what you described. Just a small plain guild whose earning its way up the ladder, and you'll find a lot of those. I found a lot of helpful ones on my server and im sure theres plenty on others.

For class recommendations, if your into melee and want high HP/DMG try:

OR

Moderate HP/Heals/Moderate DMG

Cleric - [I personally never rolled one, but lurk around the builds part of the DDO forums, who knows what you may find :D]

And if your in the mood for magic or rangers try going Wizard for starters or maybe even a Ranger.

It all depends on how you play, for a new player I recommend Barbarians and that build, I myself am a new player as well and that build served me well till now.

Since you're somewhat familiar with 3.5, you probably have an idea what a class's roles are. So, before we can really give suggestions on what to play, it'd be nice to know what sort of role or class you enjoy.

If you backed me in a corner . . . I think Ive decided on human wizard. I'm at work now Ill give more details later but a nice generic wizard build would be great.

I think for a new player, you may want to consider self-sufficient builds. Cure potions are expensive for a new player. Short of getting into parties or getting a cleric hireling, a build that can self-heal will save you a fair amount on cure potions.

A human wizard is fine, but I would recommend a halfling wizard (or a warforged wizard if you have it unlocked). The reason is halflings can get healing dragonmark feats whereas warforged can get self-healing spells.
