View Full Version : Some stuff confuses me

Hi, past few years I have played/playtested a lot of games. However, I'd love some pointers here.

Mobs always sidestep but when I use aswd movement I circle instead. I can adjust my play for this but feeling perhaps I miss something. It feels as if the mobs exploit the game function of flanking, while I can't do so easily.

I see some sort of console game joystick symbols above the chatacter's head - how do I get rid of it?

Looting...
I stab a breakable and something drops and then I fumble around for it - with one specific item - Bolts - I can fumble forever before I get a grabbing symbol cursor.
At one point in the baby Storehouse quest I had a few bolts on the ground that were entirely non-pickable due to them sitting inside a piece of dungeon dressing (some dirt on the floor perhaps).
Sometimes when I try to pick something from the floor, the character just stands swinging weapon in the air while the cursor is in Grab mode. Why? How do I get rid of it? Am I missing a Loot key?

Holding your left mouse button and then hitting the "aswd" keys will strafe the way you are thinking..I think.

Not sure what you are talking about, but most likely it's under UI settings.

Backspace key will select items on the ground in your area, once they are in your forus orb, hit "U" to pick them up. Mobs can be selected in a similar fashion using the Tab key.

first. the wasd works for general movement but to do a 'side-step' try using your 'q' and 'e' keys :)

as for loot hit 'backspace' and it will auto select the nearest thing.. hopefully in the case of those annoying bolts that drop to the floor it will be the bolts.. hit 'u' and it auto picks it up for you

hope this helps :)

If your controls are the default setup, use Q to target any non enemy interact-able (levers, loot) and E to interact (pull lever, pick up).

If you change your key mappings to "classic" in the options, you can do sidesteps as well.

Yes, they love flanking, which gives combat it's special flavor. When you're circled, just leave the circle by jumping backwards, and you'll have them all before you. Or get a wall in a back.

Target the item and press E. It's the general interaction button.

This happens if you're in the line of sight of a mob, even if it's not aggro yet. E helps as well in this case (just have to target whatever you wanna pick up).

Answers in red.

edit: meh, far too slow :)

Neat, thanks!

(The symbols above char in 3rd person view is an O when moving forward etc. Perhaps the game was designed for console like Oblivion?)

EDIT Can't see a Rep button except on my own posts. I'll fax some industrial strength swedish coffee as Thanks instead. /EDIT

Strangely my default setup has always been different.

If the above doesn't work try Q for selecting interact-able objects and E to pick up or interact. I've never had the backspace - U setup but I think I'd prefer this one anyway. Easier to interact/loot on the run with one hand on the mouse.

Holding right mouse button and wsad strafes for me.

Edit: BEaten to it

backspace - U

Sometimes, the loot still teleports into a stationary object and CANNOT be picked up. Move along.

Didn't know this, thanks for the tip.

Only if you keymap them to do so. See below.

This is correct.

The difference is whether you have the DDO Classic set-up, or the new default version.
When I first played this game years ago I used the Classic version.
When I returned later the default version was reversed as far as the mouse button usage and I had to get used to it this way. As soon as I got used to it, I preferred it over the Classic set-up.

1. Holding your tumble key (mine is SHIFT by default, can't be certain about yours) and then pressing a directional movement key will make you "hop" if you don't have ranks in tumble or roll if you do, get high enough its a somersault.
You can flank enemies without tumble however by moving around them and jumping can be very useful.

2. Is it possible you have been cursed? enemy debuffs occasionally show an icon over your head that are generally different colored circles, i.e. Bane, curse.

There are multiple "default" settings. The backspace-u version is the "classic" or something along those lines (the original the game used for 3ish years). The q-e version is the newer default. You an switch between defaults in the keyboard mapping setup.

Another slightly confusing thing: for easier access to...photoshop, the www, vlc player etc, I play windowed. However, mid-fight I must have grabbed a window border: suddenly game window is half an inch wide and I can see the character in there, getting beat up. Dragged the border of the game window out again but was unable to continue the fight: character kept running in circles, all I could do was pot.

Is this problem somehow win7 specific or to play windowed on a specific resolution means nothing and it's free-form resize under any OS? I do see it as a problem since the game bugged badly after it had been squished to a thin line =)

Perhaps again I missed something, Option: lock window size or the like.

I found the "FPS" setup to work best for me, despite playing a lot of MMOs in the past. It just feels more intuitive, since mouselook is on all the time and you only need to turn it off when using a panel (inventory, character etc.)

Well, clicking shortcut bars can be useful too but they're so tiny in this game I prefer key bindings to activate skills.
