View Full Version : I think I made a mistake somewhere.

I'm lvling up a Cleric healbot, to become the healer of my group of friends, who consist of a Rogue, Ranger, Sorceror and a Barbarian. Now, at first, I thought I'd require to tank for my friends, since we don't have a legitimate tank, so after my first level in Cleric, I went Paladin once.
I think this was a really bad choice of me, and due to my stats, it wasn't optimal. However, I wanted to know a few things.
With my friends, would we actually require a legitimate tank? If not, is there any builds for me to become a healer/tank, who'd tank the majority of things, and chuck heals out whenever needed?
If not, should I remake a Cleric, and go full Cleric, or should I just carry on with my current one? I mean, will I lose out much from being a Cleric19/Paladin1 instead of a Cleric20?
Thanks.

In general it is never is a good idea to multiclass if you dont know exactly why you are doing it.
Since you didnt post your stats or feats it really is hard to tell if you messed your build up or not.

The thing about DDO is that there often isn't a need for a required "tank". Your barbarian, rogue, sorc and ranger friends should be more than able to handle the mobs.
You'll lose +1 to your DCs if you cast any type of offensive or crowd control spells, probably a handful of SP, and the Cleric capstone (Divine Intervention, prevents a party member from falling below -9 HP), which isn't really anything special but is nice situationally.
Would it be a possibility for you to reroll and be able to quickly catch up to your friends?

multiclassing is not a shoping centre where you just pick what just fits your taste right now.
for leveling the biggest down might be to be always one level behind in what you could be.

I understand about it, but I didn't fully think about it at the point, and realised I made the mistake.
My Str is 8, Dex 8, Con 14, Int 10, Wisdom 18, and Charisma 14 (Something along those lines) I figured out that wouldn't work too well, but I tried it all the while.
It's not a problem to reroll quickly, because it's only to Level 2. (However, I DID send ihm a lot of money and other things from another character. And since I have no way to reaching them, I can't send anything to another character. So that might be one thing.)
If there is any other way to get that money and items I sent, then I don't midn rerolling. But if all I lose is a situational move, a +1 to my DC's and a handful of SP, then I guess I might skip it. Not sure.

I absolutely agree with Sirea on this.
Putting a level of paladin on a cleric isn't terrible, just not perfect. I have a cleric I multiclassed with fighter and he's plenty tough but not the best cleric he could be.
If you're all having a little bit of trouble with level appropriate quests then you all might want to have a little look at your characters to see where things might be a little weak.
Oh, and don't call yourself a healbot maybe. Have a bit of pride in your work! :)

just skip the korthos quest series and you get access to a mailbox.
How much is "a ton of money"?
if its less than 100.000g on which server are you? (a usual lvl 20 makes 100.000-200.000 in 60 minutes gametime)

This level of paladin is pretty much a waste with these stats. If you're only L2, rerolling sounds like the best option since you should be able to get back there very fast with just a bit of XP farming.
If you want a cleric who can melee, you can for instance follow the Warpriest build in this thread (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=232660).

Reroll now, level 2 is fast and easy to get. The Paladin level was indeed a bad choice and would be a dead weight for your character.
DDO does not require a "tank" type character, like you might know from other MMOs. Here all melees fill the "Tank" and the "DPS" role. With different emphasis according to particular build.
A guy who just stands there and gets beat around while others kill monsters is possible to build, but highly suboptimal in 99% of the content. There are some fighter builds which have this as an option when the S*** hits the F**, but not as a standard modus operandi.

Alright great. So you'd recommend not being a healbot, so to speak, but more of a warpriest?

With those stats, you havent got "a healbot" - what you have is a potentially powerful offensive spellcaster with great group support capabilities :)
Despite being a little behind on your spellpower & progression, you'll gain:
- up to 12 HP (from base plus paladin toughness enhancement)
- a slight boost to saves (pallies have full progression for all plus the aura)
- weapon proficiencies (not as necessary admittedly)
- Focus Of Good (enhancement for 1 AP) to boost your concentration skill a bit to make your spells less likely to be disrupted if you're hit.
So its pretty much up to you, but if you're worried about losing items & cash just send them back through the mail (finish korthos if needed, you'll grab a few extra TP & some ham for it too so its not a complete write-off).

No:
- his Spell Resistance checks, dependent on his caster level, will lose 1 point;
- the damage output of some of his spells (e.g. Blade Barrier) will be slightly lower;
- the DC of his spells will be perfectly fine.

With a 14 Charisma, at higher levels you can hit a 20 - 22 charisma at least and you will be able to take a second level of paladin around level 13+ to get your charisma to your saves, use the paladin Bulwark aura which will raise your ac so much higher.

Ah yes, my bad. I mis-read. Sorry.
Just one last question. Once I have started the starter quest area (Korthos) is there any way to skip it? I've done it before, and if there is, I can get to just mailing my new character the money and items, and then just create a new character.

Alright great. So you'd recommend not being a healbot, so to speak, but more of a warpriest?
There are mostly 4 types of cleric builds:
- those that melee but still keep focus on offensive spellcasting (Warpriest in the revisited paths stickied thread)
- those that melee and give up totally offensive spellcasting
- those that don't melee and focus only on offensive spellcasting (Font of Healing in the revisited paths stickied thread)
- healbots that don't melee nor cast offensive spells
The two I'd recommend are #1 and #3. #2 can work but better know what you're doing, and #4 is only for when you feel lazy ;)
All 4 are supposed to act as main healers too (you could make some more deeply multiclass melee-oriented cleric who is not main healer, but I didn't count that here).
