My Lv5 Wizard is having difficulties trying to defeat Haverdasher in Elite. My pet Hell Hound always dies quickly by the tails of the 2nd or 3rd scorpion, which essentially leaves me undefended and gangbanged to death despite whatever spells I am trying to come up with.

So basically - is it possible for a Lv5 Wiz to solo this mission in Elite? If so, any ideas or suggestions?

look on the AH for some cheap FW scrolls, cast jump on your self pick up a few cure serious pots, jump around untell everything is dead.

Meh. FW scrolls aren't really worth it for that quest.
I say either get a hireling melee... or just spam Niac's cold ray until it hits.
Jump + Blur will help you take less damage.

As a lvl 5 wiz you probably should not expect to stand and cast...your gonna have to run around/jump around...but do-able.

Remember its elite...it is supposed to be difficult.

I find wizard solo better in melee mode earlier on, assuming your a warforged. Try buffing for melee and maximized ur repair spells, get a great axe and you should find it easy.

That quest will prove very hard for a new player on a wizard to solo.

The AC of the scorpions is high enough that most Wizards will only be able to hit them occasionally. They have enough Hit Points that it will take a number of hits to drop them. Scropions as vermin are immune to a number of otherwise useful effects.

Having a summoned monster is very useful. What you need to be able to do is to control the number of mobs you are fighting at one time. When the first scorpions appear, drag them out of the room up the hallway. One asset a starting Wiz might still have is the eternal wand. Even thou the damage is not huge it is pretty reliable and will eventually kill a scorpion. You need to have spells like Blur and anything that makes it hard to hit you going. Use Aid Clickies for more HP. Even things like Mage Armor might give you enough AC to make the Scorpions not auto hit you, and that helps.

Been a while but you used to be able to body pull one or at most two scorpions a time up the hallway. If you get surrounded by the whole pack, you are dead.

Spells like Melf's acid arrow are good. I think Glitterdust will be useful and potentially blind them. (which while it does not kill them, makes it harder for them to kill you.)

Remember that on ELITE, the challenge of the mobs jumps by about 5 levels, while the level of the quest only jumps 2 levels. And that DUNGEON scaling is pronounced on NOrmal, only slightly present on hard and all but gone on Elite when running solo.
