Noob, F2P, no tomes and no equipments. Was originally thinking Sorcerer but I want the feats, so Wizard will have to do. How bad is this build? :)

At first glance, your Delayed Blast Fireballs will be marginally better than a fire/fire shroud clicky.

With a 24 (+6 item to your 18 shown in the planner) casting stat, and... well somewhere below lvl 9 spell DCs with heighten, any spells with a save (including your DBF) will be... suboptimal at best, completely ineffective at worst.

really bad...

really the whole Fighter/Wizard is EXTREMELY hard to pull off. And even then is not very viable "end game". I personally do not recommend the whole melee wizard thing unless you have 32 point build (or more with some nice true reincarnate feats to boot)

that being said, I think you can indeed have fun with this build. Though I think you should check out Bard. Or looking into a Warforged 18WIZ/2ROG Hybrid or a 20 SOR. You will be able to melee *Ok* at lower lvls with masters touch.

Though if its melee and spell casting you want. Check out Favored Soul. Lotsa options...and all are fun.

i do not have access to paid contents, hence no WF, no FS.
will mostly only be casting evocation spells --> Maximize and Empower.
will also rely on buffs especially stoneskin, displacement and greater heroism --> Extend.
i like to run around and hit thus i picked Spring Attack.

this build is short 7 BAB vs full 20 Fighter, and GH will give it +4. is this build still gimped?

Well, what you should understand is that throwing DBF is not an impressive ability.

Compared to a wiz19/fig1, this character is moderately better at melee and a lot worse with spells. If you want to both cast spells and fight with a falchion, why not Cleric19/Fig1? That way you could heal yourself when you (inevitably) get crunched by melee opponents.

sighs... i really like fireballs lol.

looks like i'll be going back to sorc 18/ paladin 2 or kensai 18 / rogue 2.

thanks for saving me some time. :)

lol somebody misses bladesinger as much as I do :p

honestly though the guys are right. In pnp it's loads of fun but in DDO having a character that permanently gets saved versus (blue dots over all mobs heads is tediously irritating) and who can be killed in one-shot while meleeing, loses fun very quickly.

For a starter you want to try make a multiclass build that compliments each other and maximises the use of abilities. Spells dc's are extremely important and hitpoints can never be underestimated.

A wiz/fighter hybrid is very difficult to play effectively for a starter character. You'll end up being a glorified bard without songs, and DBF is not the spell you should aspire to :p

How about Fighter 12 / Wizard 6 / Rogue 2? BAB will be 16/16/21/26/26, one point better than a full cleric, 1 point less than if I choose bard 6. Plus, Bard 6 do not get displacement and haste.

Stat-wise: 16/10/12/14/8/14 or if I max STR will be 18/10/12/14/8/8

Fighter 12 to get to Kensai II.

Wizard 6 gives me access to level 3 buff spells --> Haste, Displacement, Heroism, Protection from Energy, with Extend they will last like, 12 minutes?

Rogue 2 will give me Evasion and skills.

And at least this build can throw the small wussy fireball for fun lol.

Play what you want to play. TBH if you enjoy soloing, the build you described would be fine at soloing.

*BUT*
If you made a "Axesinger" Bard which is a 15BRD/3ROG/2FTR build you would be able to sing/buff/trapmonkey/dps/evasion. It is a super fun build and I think you would like it. Also with UMD you could use a wand of fireballs and with "Wand Heightening/Potency" enhancements, you could out-nuke that build you just described.

How about Fighter 12 / Wizard 6 / Rogue 2?
That wouldn't be too shabby, IMHO. Do you have Warforged? If so, you'd also be able to self-heal via Repair spells.

The standard rule of thumb is to never take any levels of a main caster class unless the majority of your levels will be in that class. (Paladin and Ranger don't count for that of course, and Bard doesn't quite either as spells are not the primary feature).

The reason behind this is because spellcasting at level 6 has hardly any value in level 20 content (especially when compared against the magic items you can get at level 20).

BAB will be 16/16/21/26/26, one point better than a full cleric
A character with 9 levels of cleric (or 10 favored soul) will have BAB 20 when fighting in melee.

Any character can achieve the same thing with items like Bracers of Divine Power, and indeed that is the standard operating procedure for melee wizards and sorcerers. (Someone who doesn't need to cast spells may prefer Madstone Boots)

Wizard 6 gives me access to level 3 buff spells --> Haste, Displacement, Heroism, Protection from Energy, with Extend they will last like, 12 minutes?
Only Heroism would last that long, and you'd do better to just get an item of Greater Heroism anyhow. Haste and Displacement would be barely a minute.

And at least this build can throw the small wussy fireball for fun lol.
If think fireballs would be fun, why not 18-20 levels of mage?

Man, I totally feel your pain.

I've always played elven fighter/mage variants in my PnP days. Even pulled some of them out to reference when I discovered this game. I've come to realize despite being warned initally as you are now, that it just doesn't work in this game. My first incarnation of Evandus was a blast to play until I hit the Vale of Twilight. I found ways to make things work up to that point. The Slayer area was my playground, while the quests were very frustrating. After reaching level 20 I took my guild's advice and TR'd into a FvS. I still get the fighting/casting fun, but really miss my arcane spells. It seems the way this game is set up, you'd have to have a ton of high end gear, and some serious twitch skills to even try it. And even then, you end up not doing anything really dps wise in melee... just about every mob saving against your spells, and low hp and mediocre spell point pool to boot.

I just thank my stars I listened to advice before accepting any invites into mid to high level raids. It wouldn't have ended well.

What would be really nice is if the devs of this game could take a hard look at the unfriendly nature of the mage multiclass. I doubt that will happen anytime in the near future however...
