At what point does it make sense to bind a weapon? My understanding is that is stops permanent damage, but are their other advantages? I've got a lvl 6 paladin with a new nifty axe, but don't want to spend the shards (and money I think) to bind unless it makes sense. Does it make sense at this low a level or should I only start thinking about it near end game?
I'm sure there are plenty of opinions on this our there. Thanks.

That level 6 axe won't be nifty at level 20...don't bind it. It isn't going to take enough perm damage to make it worth it, anyway.

The other benefit is the ability to apply some rituals (http://ddowiki.com/page/Stone_of_Change_-_Recipes) on the attuned item.

I still find that until I hit the high teens I'm cycling weapons in and out almost every level (but I have a couple of mules loaded with items) but you may have a point 120 shards plus some easy to find collectibles would get you a +1 damage or 1d4 on Crits...might be worth it.

And binding makes it impossible to hand a nifty, but outleveled, weapon down to
your next character.
