View Full Version : Turbinites on the Escapist

I've created a user group on the Escapist for us members of the DDO/Turbine community. More of a lark than anything, but it's open to all that want to give it a go, just for sh!ts and giggles.

Well, the accusations and vitriol of the escapist regulars isn't ending. So I think it's time for a little escalation.
Now, Doc, I know you, me, and a few others originally wanted to do this without any official help from Turbine. But, since the accusations of having it in the launcher aren't going away, I say, let us ask Patience and Co. to make them true. Besides, we have a whole group of people who do not ever visit the forums who deserve to express their opinions over at the Escapist.
I'd even enjoy and ask the people who would be voting against Turbine to come along. At least they, unlike the Escapist folks, would be voting against Turbine with working knowledge of the games and for legitimate reasons to be disgruntled.

Spent the last hour or so reading posts on various forums over there. What I keep seeing is some subtle (and not so subtle) bashing of Turbine based on "Turbine's ability to get the word out" and how it "Isn't fair". I am having deja-vu from last year and all the BS that was flying around the site.
DON'T GIVE IN! Don't stoop to their level! Keep it clean and don't get banned!
Turbine can certainly win it all again this year with the same support we had last year.

I'd really like to encourage the user base of DDO plus its brethern LOTRO AND AC players to vote in March Mayhem (for or against Turbine). I'd like to do this without the launcher or News Announcement.
A lot of us want to prove we can mobilize 100% without Turbine's announcement and launcher notices. It would make them realize just how wrong they are about Turbine.
Folks, you got the word out and DDO became a revolution in 2009 thanks to things like March Mayhem and Eberron Unlimited. Now, make DDO stand on its own 2 legs as a community. There's no reason the Turbine Community cannot win this thing without Turbine's post.

Who cares what some people on the Escapist boards think about DDO...the votes at the end will determine the winner. I support ignoring trolls and supporting DDO in the contest by acting honorably and without rebuke, but the Internet's gonna be the Internet...
I would also support a no-launcher idea, we can do it without 'em.

One, you're going to have to break some EULA/CoC Kistilan Stylee (ie very sneakily) and promote in the game. I recommend creative LFMs (like looking for the Druid's Circle, but not that one).
Two, we have a widely-established promotion system in the Hall of Fame Thread (I believe Impaqts (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=164575)). I recommend the users that made a foothold at the mmo sites listed there promote the Escapist Vote for Turbine. Off-Forum vote requests by users were undoubtedly part of the winning strategy against Bioware in 2009.
Third, we need to tap AC & LOTRO forums. I haven't visited my account over there recently, but I know there are some well-entrenched DDO/LOTRO Players on our forums that may have some Star Power over there for the future rounds. Individuals like DWF are the voice of the people in these events when coming in a forum communication format.
Last, we've got the podcasts. Jerry alone is a mobilization effort with a big hammer. We've got Cocktail Hour (and their spoof). I'd love to see Clankenbeard goof on The Escapist Fanbase Alligations against Tubine Hivemind Hordes and the "brainwashing" that is Turbine's technique.
I mean, hell, I went to an AlchAnon forum and posted "Stay Sober, Longer! Vote for Turbine!" last year. Creativity is something this community has a special knack in executing. Let's get creative every round and find a new gimmick (that won't get us banned or probated).

Please! Not again!!! No more using LFMs for other purposes...
Who cares what other people think? They can grief someone else and let me be...

It will be that way again.
And they are correct.
Why should I frequent their forums? There is nothing there of interest to me other than vile and vitriol from the players of X game that loses some popularity contest on the ethernet.

We were spamming non-game sites to pump up support for Turbine last year? Hell, I'd hate us.

No. We weren't. At least I don't think we were.
I *did* post a unique post and screenshot it to get laughs HERE, however. It was linked to the site's topic as well.
I was demonstrating the creativity. I don't recommend spamming non-gaming sites unless they are somehow linked to Dungeons and Dragons. I guess you could go post at Red Vs Blue, but that would only help Bungie out.
I don't even recommend spamming, by the way. One single post is all you need to make a ripple effect.

I totally agree.
With the new influx of players many of which are refugees from other MMOs there is a hugmongous player base now that may not even know this Poll exhists or why.
Edjamacte the masses I say.
1. Guild participation
2. Blogs not just on MyDDO - MyLotro anywhere you blog.
3. Forums - letting the new players and old ones know they can keep Turbine no 1 Dev
I cant count the number of ppl in our guild alone, as we sponsor many F2P that have now become subscribers - how they dont regret for one minute quitting their old MMO and coming here etc etc
Now is the chance for them to show Turbine with a yes, those who think it sux should also say so... keep it real and honest it is good feedback for Turbine.

I dont care if they whinge.... let them whinge... let them throw their rotten tomatoes... they can do their best. We will not be deterred ! LOL
seriously though... who cares if their readers (whatever) dont like it ?
I cant believe Im saying this *swallows hard* "their not the boss of me!" *takes a pill and lies down for awhile*

Maybe some of you are being overcritical of this years posts over there or something, cause so far the forums on our part of the contest have been fairly tame and respectful with only a few minor posts of "never heard of Turbine", "their tactics are unfair", or "don't like what they did last time so I've voting against them" types, but even that is not bad. They're not name-calling or being mean about it, just respectfully saying their opinion.
In fact most of the borderline inflammatory stuff I've seen has been posted by us Turbinites who keep dredging up how we were treated last year and I think if we keep it up it's only gonna make them get defensive again.
While I agree we do need to rally the troops (preferably on our own to prove we can do it) I certainly think we need to show some restraint in their forums and not take offense where none was given.

This year the moderators made it very very clear that any flicker will trigger a coldburst banhammer upon them.
Just saw a guy get put on probation for saying that bioware and bethesda should win because they "actually deserve it"

Just my useless opinion here, but Kist is right. If we gonna do this without the launcher this year than we need another way to reach the 90 percent of folks that DO NOT visit the forums. Pumping those that visit the forums everyday up is easy, getting the word out to the rest of the crowd is going to be exceptionally difficult without the launcher. We will need the equivalent of the launcher, in game on every server, all day, every day. Thats going to be difficult.
Kist's ideas above are great ones, but we'll need more. More sites, by more folks, much much more often, without being too spammy (tho i dont really care if someone thinks its spammy).
We have a tremendous amount of new folks we need to rally, and it needs to be now, not when we in trouble. There's no tomorrow, no next match, no when im outta work later on in the week, if we gonna do this alone, its right now, or..not at all. (again, my useless opinion.)
If we can rally the new folks, and folks who dont visit these forums to cast a vote, we'll win. If not, we wont.
Second, i'm all for pre-emptive strikes against other folks. Its whats being done to us, and yes, im actually saying it. Two can play the game, and they'll regret the day they thought they could silence us!!!
Ok, enough dramatics. Its real simple guys (to me at least), if we gonna win, if we gonna do it alone, we need to generate as much, if not more exposure than the launcher would. Of course not everyone pays attention to the launcher but its safe to presume that a larger number of folks vote because of it, than without it.
Anywho, enough rambling. Just some thoughts, each decides as they must. I respect everyone's right to not vote for Turbine of course, but at least vote for someone.

Good points, Rich. I've been posting on our guild website. I imagine (or hope) many others are, too.

Forget last year and the criticisms.
This year we get the chance to disprove/prove their claims that is the reason Turbine won. I am fully confident that Turbine could blitz the competition again and again.
To be truthful I just think a lot of the DDO comMunity couldnt give a rats fluff in Hades about the Escapist Forums and are not members (normally) and as it is an Escapist competition about "their" fan base and who they think should win, its not necessarily a reflection of the market unless Turbine's fanbase (who normally couldnt be bothered with Escapist) to get on there and say RAH! RAH!
So you can understand a few ppl getting upset that things went they way they did.
If it is a true DEVELOPERS AWARDS than every Developer has the opportunity to rally its fanbase however they wish.... dont they?
