View Full Version : Voice statements for non-microphone players

Repeating a perennially good suggestion from before DDO was launched. Note that many multiplayer action games implement this idea almost exactly (the Battlefield 1942 series, for example). For various reasons, not everyone can use a microphone at all times. The ability to make a small number of audible statements with keystrokes or mouse clicks would be a big help. Here's an example of one way to do it.

1. Get a few actors to record short speech samples. Because these may be heard in every dungeon, they'll need to be higher-quality work than some of the recent DM narration has been.

2. Players can select the voice set for each character in the options menu, constrained by race and gender.

3. A keybind opens the voice statement menu. Capslock or tilde could be a good default.

4. When the voice menu is open, pressing keys from 1-0 either plays a voice sample, or opens another menu.

5. Here are some useful voice statements and their number assignments. Notice that they are generally in opposing pairs, so they're easier for players to learn.
Main List: 1 Yes, 2 No, 3 Go, 4 Stop, 5 Help, 6 Done, 7 Attack, 8 Retreat, 9 Trap, 0 Secondaries
Secondary List: 1 Enemy, 2 Goal, 3 Where?, 4 Follow Me, 5 Great, 6 Oh No, 7 Thanks, 8 Oops, 9 Hello, 0 Goodbye

6. Optionally these messages can also show up in the text chat log, for the benefit of players who have sound off. They could also cause a small highlight on the player's map blip or character name.

7. For better results, limit the rate of sending these statements to avoid stuck-key situations and similar problems. For example, you have 4 charges of voice statements which regenerate one per 30 seconds, or faster when you have zero.

8. For profitability, create "premium" voice schemes for sale in the DDO Store that sound more distinctive (and impressive) than the default ones.

I would pay 20000000000.03 TP's to be able to have, on-demand, a voice clip of Dave Arneson saying "That didn't work, pull the other lever!" in that hillarious, monotone voice he uses for NPC voices in Thernal.

I like this. I also think that since we are using a hotkey to open the menu, having the options dragable to the hotbars, similar to how teleport options can be dragged, would make this system even easier to use.

I also like the limit with regen, as that will prevent griefing through the use of this system.

Marvellous idea. Would be a great addition to the game.

I liked the idea for hotkeys for different commonly used phrases.
CoX had this and one of the keys was Battlecry which you could set e.g. "Evil doers beware!"
Often I'd end up hitting the wrong key though and get "Stop" , "Yes" , and all my commands muddled :/

I personally wouldn't like the audible voice thingy as I think it will get messy and then you
may miss who said what if the voices are limited to a few sound sets. I'd end up reading the party chat
just to confirm (which I don't mind doing anyway).

No, for one reason...

Could you imagine the mayhem if one of the clips added was "Share plz"

WRONG! Some of us WANT to have a gameshow host ingame voice! Or at the very least people want the VERY distinctive “Somebody help me! PLEASSSSEEE!” available for female warforged that need a heal/repair.

As a non-mic player, I find the idea interesting. Since my main is a ranger/rogue I can see myself getting a lot of use out of the "TRAP! Oh my god didn't you hear me don't run forward yet you idiot wow that has to hurt!" sound bite.

get Jo Brand and Stephen Fry for it (stephen fry voiced reaver in fable 2 (amazing how i know that and hate fable and elder scrolls), and jo brand maybe someone just us british that are sad enough to watch QI to know), maybe alan davies for characters starting under 10 int ^^ (yeh i love QI too much)

nah i agree with the idea of signing, i cant have a mic with where i live, (would just get broken by other people)

Good suggestion.

Unfortunately open to abuse with spam spam yes spam no no spam yes spamming. Do you really want some noob spamming 'heal me' x100 while you let their gimp ass die? :)

To add to the suggestions, I would love to be able to create macros/bind the existing commands!

The game currently have some good emotes such as /point and /stop, though are difficult to type in quick enough. Being able to bind some of these to a key would make them immensely more useful. Those who are more social naturally will love the extra expressiveness that you get with all the other fun ones you have.

The /alias command does not cut it, and most of the guts for this already seems to be in chat system already.

If we could bind keys to pre-defined emotes, macros, or canned text, then I would be glad.

... Stephen Fry ...

He would be awesome... just listened to an Audiobook read by him. But he probably is a very pricey speaker :(

/signed by the way. Would love my dwarf to be able to shout at those lazy ass elfes :)

i have a mic but it is not a headset so i often do not bother to use it

being able to hit a key in the middle of play would be a great addition to my gameplay

As opposed to them yelling it in voice chat instead?

A good idea, and many would benefit from it. Hope it comes to light. If nothing else, at least just a "Trap, don't move" key. Nothing against those who can't/don't use voice, but a rogue who has to type trap and wait for the rest of the group to read/see it..well, it's fun to say the least. *laughs*

This in some form, would be great.

Nice idea, it can be better if we can have specific audio clips for specific dungeons like:

Tempest Spine: Who got the runes??!!
Necro III: Dont kill the silver flame!!!
Gwylans Stand: That chest has TRAPS...

Left 4 Dead has this feature. It can be handy but people spam the **** out of it in that game. Of course, we have easy squelches here so I dont see that as a problem.

Yeah, I like. I only really used something like this way back in the day when I was into Counter-Strike, but even in a crazy fast-paced game like that you get really good at banging out the voice commands real quick. z-1-4 (or whatever), doesn't even take a full second.

Yes, I enjoy laughing maniacally in LFD to the point that people wonder what's wrong w/ me...

Still, I was just going to say that this kind of easy system of "stop!" "wait!" "trap!" and such might be perfect for DDO.

I would add "standby for further intsruction" SO people will stop and wait for stradagy to be typed out. My biggest problem I have in TS runs.

Another great idea A_D..../signed.

Let me suggest a third row of commonly needed phrases...

1. "Remove your **** curse so I can heal you"
2. "Is anyone else getting lag?"
3. "Haste would be nice" (auto speaks every 3 min)
4. "brb wife aggro"
5. "have to log, wife aggro"
6. "Check out my backstab damage on this portal!"
7. Shroud specific - "Is he dead yet? Im still showing him at 90% health"
8. "Someone rez the rogue"
9. "Everyone let the caster drop firewall, we'll stay back until the quest is complete"
10. "That's what she said"

You need the "Trap!" one, the "TRAP!!", the "TRAAAP!!!" and the "TRAP TRAP TRAP TRAP!!!!11".

Absolutely!! This is just what we need. the noob barbarian running ahead of the party, around the corner spamming the "hjeal me" key.

I think a lot of you that are talking about it being a spam problem seem to have missed this part of the OP which is actually a great idea. I use a mic but on occasions where my neck is bothering me and I don't want to wear my huge headset I just don't talk because for the most part typing while I try to heal really doesn't help anyone.

Even if that was not part of his suggestion "spamming" voice chat is already possible: you just hold push to talk and spout nonsense continually.

It's not like it would create a new problem or like there was not already a solution to it (ie /ignore).
