I am soloing this quest in order to collect blue dragonscales quickly. Doing fine so far but since I have never partied with anyone with this quest, I have some questions:
1. Out of 3 runs, (killed blue and black dragons) I never got a black dragonscale. The only chest I see in the black dragon treasure room is the crappy looking wooden one. Will the black scale drop from this? Or did I miss the black dragon chest? (I'm thinking that the chest might look like the blue dragon chest - red and gold colored metal chest).
2. Blue and black are easy, but white is hard. At first I thought that this might be the easiest since I can just firewall it to death, but the cold aura thingy seems to stack till I can no longer move (and die eventually). Any tips?

The only way to reduce the aura is to get away from the dragon until it wears off. Waves of Exhaustion can help with this.

1. yes same chest.
Rumor has it white scales also drop in Prey on the hunter and Black scales in Mired in Kobolds.
2. your guess is as good as mine. there is nothing so far that will defend against it other than killing him quickly . the giant is more annoying that anything the dragon does.

Spellcasters can typically move away from the dragon to keep out of the cold aura. If you can't, it's likely because ice is inhibiting your movement. Try to either avoid stepping on the ice, or obtain boots that prevent slipperiness, such as drop in VON6 or Prison of the Planes.
(The FOM buff would work, except that the giant has a tendency to dispel it)

Da, the giant keeps dispelling the buffs it's annoying, but his cometfalls don't affect me. Looks like I need special boots eh?
Lore wise, it saddens me that I had to eliminate Blaze, he seems like a nice giant :)

I can confirm that Whites drop in Prey. I've been in a group that got one, but you I would assume that it's only because we did the optional

Out of curiosity, how do you solo the part where you are supposed to split the party in two? (just before the Gatekeeper fight)

Yes, the wooden chest in the Black Dragon/Fire Giant area is the chest where scales drop. Also, you're not always guaranteed a scale. I've done runs where I've pulled a scale in each, and I've done runs where I didn't pull a thing.
2. Blue and black are easy, but white is hard. At first I thought that this might be the easiest since I can just firewall it to death, but the cold aura thingy seems to stack till I can no longer move (and die eventually). Any tips? If you have a high enough jump, you can jump on a pillar and FW them both to death.

In Prey, you have to fight the White dragons to unlock the chest that gives out (if you're lucky) white scales.
I've never seen it, but I keep hearing that Mired in Kobolds drops Black scales, but I've ransacked those chests twice and haven't seen one drop. Apparently the droprate is abyssmal. :(

That's why I edited it.... :D I'd just woken up and was only thinking of the switches... :)

I found 1 scale in 4 normal runs, and 2 scales in a single elite run. It might be luck, but it looks like you have better chances to find scales at higher difficulties.
(By the way, I'm always looking for competent players to farm the Tor for scales, since my guildies are not interested in the grind. I usually play on Cannith from 10pm to midnight GMT+1.)

Im pretty sure gold requires TP, so nope, i would not do that... What a waste...
I still dont see hirelings doing either side alone...

Ah, thanks, I thought even in defensive situation, a hireling would fight stuff. I haven't run hirelings much but I've noticed a defensive cleric would still occasionally attack monsters around (now I guess it's because these monsters have been attacking me and thus the hireling attacked to defend me...)
Good job :)

Hey vettkinn, great videos the ones you are making, really appreciate the texts added, cause english is my sencond languaje too, so its much easier for me to read instructions than listen to them.
On a side note, about what i quoted you above, its funny that you ask about the angry face, when every one of your posts are titled with an angry face, even when there is nothing to be angry about :D
Keep the good work with the videos :) +1 i really can learn a lot of how using a hireling for optimal effect.

When Gianthold was released there weren't hirelings or casual mode, so it wasn't a thing to solo back when the most voluble players were active with it. Now that it became soloable, most of the people who'd make videos or guides have no reason to be interested in farming it. The most you'll find is people who used the first room as a demonstration of combat DPS.
For me it was really funny to watch your video and see how massively nerfed the giants became from their original versions. Back in the day a sorcerer would be STUPID to ever try damage spells on the giants... Flesh to Stone was his only offensive choice.

Black scales indeed drop from Mired. I pulled one from big momma's chest after defeating her on hard...

The Holy Smite bug was added quite some time after Gianthold Tor came out. And of course, it was such an obvious exploit that nobody would have wanted to get in trouble by making a video about it!

well, when it first came out, we were still in the 1300 spell point range. they all had fire resist and the only real cold spell was cone of cold which they'd evade. it was still nice for the train of other mobs on the way to the dragon.
good times, that was also when empower/maximize used to work on FOD

After the meta magic change, before the giants were nerfed (at least I don't think they were nerfed back then), my sorcerer would often join nervous parties asking if he had flesh to stone, which he did. He was never asked if he would ever cast it once inside the quest however, as opposed to just killing most of them...
(disclaimer: Normal setting.)
My favorite part was seeing you take damage from falling from the Snutch passage yet doing a great job soloing the quest!
+1 rep to you Comrade.

"The Gatekeeper will appear and need slaying, kill it with fire"
That made me laugh :D Kudos on the video.
Also, I ran this quest back in mod 4 like craaaaaazy and I had never noticed that Snutch actually ran to hist using place, has it always been like this?
And regarding holy smite... Oh the good ol' days ;)
