View Full Version : Dexer Barbarian Tank viable?

I was thinking about making a Halfling tank. Would a high ac / hp / dr barbarian intimidator with rogue splash for evasion and umd, and fighter splash be a viable build? If so, what would be the minimum barbarian levels required for the highest dr (16)? I would need 2 or 3 rogue for evasion, and maybe a fighter level or two for feats and tower shield. Would UMD even be possible, or should I just get the dragonmarks. I could go with another race, but I like halflings, and don't really want to play a toaster.

Constructive and destructive comments accepted. Thank you for your cooperation.

Halflings will have a -4 size penalty to Intimidate against nearly everything, which makes it harder to have a decent Intimidate. With the rage penalties, it is even harder to have a high AC on a barbarian unless you aren't raging, which defeats the purpose. I'd look more at a mostly fighter build for something like this.

Nope. Dex-based tanks are barely viable, and they certainly wouldn't work as a Barbarian.

Dex barb = raging brings your strength up to the normal level of everyone else unraged
Dex barb unraged = low hp
Dex barb raged = lowered AC

You appear to be overestimating the value of DR and Intimidate for tanking purposes. An effective top level tank needs to hold aggro even if he gets stunned for a bit, which means it can't be coming from Intimidate.
