View Full Version : DDO randomly closes occasionally with dndclient error

Hi, occasionally when I play the game, it will just crash. Once this happened twice in about 3 hours, and sometimes it doesn't happen after 6+ hours of playing. The error I get when it crashes looks like this:

http://i50.tinypic.com/25zql1i.jpg

Not sure if it's something with my hardware, or if I need to repair a file or something.

Same issues here I constantly check these forums for possible solutions..Ive tried many possible fixes but ....Ive been stuck like this for well over a year now. When I first started playing the game on XP it NEVER happened. When I bought a Vista machine with much better possible performance....it began. Im convinced there is only one fix...throw the computer out the window and buy a new one!

Has anyone found a solution to this yet? It's driving me insane. I was having this problem on Vista, so I upgraded to Win7 and completely re-installed DDO. Still happens. All of my drivers are the latest. Same issue. It doesn't seem to be any area specific, and though it occurs more commonly after a loading screen, it will happen in the middle of an instance. I *did* however receive an updater error right after the dndclient closed. I didn't write down the message since I was in the process of trying to collect stones and get the party back up in TS.

I've come up with two idea's so far as to a possible cause.

Is everyone else using a Creative Labs headset or soundcard that is having this problem?

The other thing I'm suspecting is the switch from the TDM to Pando. After redownloading the game I noticed that the TDM is no longer part of the package. I uninstalled Pando, now I'm going to see if that has any effect.

When you get a chance definitely post your dxdiag info (steps how are in the how to get help sticky in my sig) but also open a support request (http://www.ddo.com/component/content/article/486-tech-ticket) as well if you haven't yet.

Uninstalling Pando was of no help, but that was clear after I read the article on how it only affects the seeding of the install files and doesn't communicate at all with the Dndclient.

I submitted a support ticket, and I'm going over the SB Arena Headset possibility now. It seems the drivers they posted on their website (Feb 2010) installed to an older version date (Aug 2009) than what it says it should be. Which is a bit suspicious to me.

Here is my DxDiag:

I just went through the firewall settings and only Dndclient.exe was listed in the allowed programs. I removed and re-added the four listed in the online support, (Dndclient.exe, Dndlauncher.exe, turbineinvoker.exe, turbinelauncher.exe).

I'll post again after playing to update whether this helps or not.

Nope, still crashing.

Number 1 spot for crashing is going into the Necropolis from House Phairlan

What is ntdll.dll?

The ntdll.dll file is a file created by Microsoft that has a description of "NT Layer DLL" and is the file that contains NT kernel functions.

This file is located in the c:\windows\system32 or c:\winnt\system32 directory and can also be found in the c:\i386 directory.

I'm getting an error with this file in Internet Explorer

Users who are encountering an error with this file while in Microsoft Internet Explorer can often resolve the issue by removing any third-party add-ons. Additional information about removing Internet Explorer add-ons as well as other basic troubleshooting steps that can be done if this does not resolve your issue can be found on document CHIE.

According to microsoft, this dll controls the kernel layer functions.

Cause of Ntdll.dll Errors
The causes of ntdll.dll error messages can vary greatly. However, most ntdll.dll errors result from a corrupt or damaged version of the ntdll.dll file itself, corrupt hardware drivers, or issues between Windows and other programs.

Ntdll.dll errors can sometimes mean that a piece of hardware in your computer is malfunctioning, but this is rare.

# Test your memory for damage. If you're receiving ntdll.dll messages, one possible cause could be a bad memory module in your system. Testing your memory will either identify a problem or clear your RAM of any responsibility.

Replace your memory if it fails any of your tests.

# Ntdll.dll errors could occur if you have an Iomega Zip drive on the same IDE cable as the hard drive inside your computer. If so, move the Zip drive to a dedicated IDE controller.

Sounds like a wide range of things could cause this issue, most likely being damaged ram or a failing hard drive. But first try to run a windows file check to see if that particular dll has become damaged. Open a command prompt and type 'sfc /scannow'. This is a windows system file check and will attempt to repair any damaged system files.

If that doesnt help, check your ram for errors. http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Opened a support inquiry, got a response in a timely fashion, changed settings, checked ram with windows diagnostics (no errors).

Result? I'm starting to crash more now. I'm also seeing that a lot of my guildies are also crashing a lot too.

Odd though, just after the Mod 5 hotfix, I went about 2 days with 0 crashes. Then it started happening hourly.

Ah well. I'm getting good at re-logging into the game.

So I have done insane amounts of debugging this issue. I have created a separate partition for ddo, created a second swap file (3 gb) and upped the main swap file to 4gb. Ran without my headset, ran without my gamepad, put in port forwarding, firewall on/off, and I even threatened it with a rubber chicken.

I pulled half my ram since my system apparently can only recognize up to 4GB (32bit), it had 8GB in it. (Was only reading 6GB of it, but it reserved the remainder because it wasn't being used).

The crashing was getting to the point where it was happening close to 80% of the time I zoned into anything.

I repaired the video settings from the launcher, turned off directx 10, and dropped the crashing down to less than 10%.

Now, I've started watching the memory usage of ddo. Holy ****.
It likes to hang out between 800-900MB for Commit, Working Set and Private memory.
I zoned into the Necropolis:
All three shot up above 1GB. Leaving my system with about 2MB of free memory.

I'll post what happens when I do it with directx 10 enabled.

Dile
07-14-2010, 01:31 AM
Directx 10 enabled:
Teleported to Market, ran through house P, entered necropolis. All 3 spiked to 1.5GB. No crash, but the usage didn't lower.
Teleported BACK to the Market, ran through house P, entered Necropolis a second time.
All three spiked to 1.6GB+, Crashed the client.

I dare say, I may be suffering from the ever elusive memory leak.

Does ANYONE have a fix for this? Even with the huge swap files (and the countless hours defragging from using them), it can't support the game. I have NO other issues with Windows 7. All of my drivers are up to date (See dxdiag above). I've cleaned the case, nothing is overheating. I am not overclocking *anything*.

I'm going to try investigating my nVidia card to see if there are any issues with it next.

-------
For those curious: Commit is Virtual Memory allocated to a process, Working Set is physical memory currently in use by the process and Private is physical memory in use by the process that cannot be used by other processes. It may very well be that both Working Set and Private are double counted, but I am assuming they are seperate.

(If you are a said techie, please, any advice would be appreciated. Even if it's something I've already done.)

Dile

Uninstalled drivers, went into safe mode and cleaned out said drivers, rebooted, installed the freshest I could find from XFX (Manufacturer drivers for GeForce 9800 GT 512MB).

Ran the Market to Necro gauntlet twice, crashed like clockwork.
