View Full Version : Had people gone a little nuts over Winter Recipes?

Why would anyone pay 300-500 thousand gp for a recipe 4? For recipe 5 I can understand -- icy burst (or anything burst) weapons are rare enough to go on AH for a million or more, -- but recipe 4? Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think frost weapon is any better than fire weapon -- extra d6 damage, and more creatures are vulnerable to fire than to cold, -- and I see fire weapons on AH only 10-40 thousand gp more than otherwise identical non-fire weapons. Why would anyone pay ten times as much (or 20 times, if you also buy 100 Winter Motes) just to put an extra d6 of cold damage on one weapon?
Or is it just that people PUT recipes 4 on AH for that much and nobody actually buys them? Because I did buy recipe 4 a week ago -- for 30 thousand gp, not 300.

The AH is only an accurate gauge for how much things AREN'T selling for.

Like the above poster said, the AH is a poor gauge for what something is actually "selling" for. I traded for 2 #5 earlier today just by watching the trade channel. I picked up one on trade for +2 Flamebursting Rapier or PG and the other I traded for two #4's. For some reason ppl see #4's and #5's as exceptionally rare and hard to come by, and this just doesn't seem to be the case. Yes #5 are not common, but they're not 100K plat uncommon IMHO.

Yes people went a little nuts...and 3's and 4's are basically give away common. The thing is you aren't talking about either/or icy or fire. You use these to double up on effects so that is pretty sweet. Best twink items in the game, and since there is almost nothing to spend your plat on the price of anything remotely interesting is high.

I agree, this is a good buff to add to any cool weapon you can find.
Some of the combos I have read about are very cool. Too bad I don't have most of those weapons.
I have added FROST to +5 weapons that are race restricted level 6. No idea if that is a good twink, but I figure a +5 FROST Longsword ML: 6, etc won't hurt.

About that recipe #5...
I worked at learning and practicing the jumps to get my own purple coins. To also save time I buy 100 hot cocoas from the DDO store at a time and will do jumps until I've gone through all 100 cocoas. I'm now usually ending up with somewhere close to 30 purple coins and then I turn them all in and generally get about 1 x recipe #5 for 30 purple coins. Can't recall how long exactly it takes me to do the 100 jumps/attempts.
But anyhow, this is not a great hit rate or coin:#5 ratio. But enough for me to get some #5's for some fun weapon ups and more than enough 3's, and 4's. Some of my friends simply cannot make the jumps period and don't have the patience for it and have paid 1-1.5MM gold for recipe #5.
I don't personally have that much extra gold to buy them, so they are simply not even priced in-reach for me. But if people can afford the gold, the price is cool i guess.

The big deal about 4's and 5's is not that they are frost/coldburst, but that they are frost/coldburst that stack on top of your existing flaming/holy burst/whatever. That's actually pretty awesome, especially for those weapon categories where people depend on random loot even into high levels.
