"In a genre that seems to have been plagued with failed launches, server merges and even shutdowns in the recent past, it's good to see a game recover and rise towards its full potential. Perhaps there's something to be learned from DDO's example. Is free-to-play the way to go for MMOs after all?"

According to Adam Mersky, their Director of Communications, a total of six updates are lined up for this year

:D

That might have had some small impact on pulling out of the nose dive as well...

Saw this just the other day. Nice to see some positive press from a big gaming website. :)

Edit: Wow...I just got like 60 rep for this post.

Adam is a man of many talents, but I think ski jumping may be a little out of his league.

Yeah, i read that too and was a little taken back. I guess it makes sense that they would need to slow down releases a little so the devs to run themselves ragged. I guess we can't really bawk at 6 updates a year. Can't say i wan't excited at the idea of monthly updates though. :D

It all comes down to what the updates contain. New classes, races, housing, etc.. will hold the masses off longer then a couple quests.

Here's hoping for a successfull year for DDO. Any chance of getting State of the Game (opps, was that outloud?)

I'd be quite happy with every other month. I imagine they had a few updates "in the bag" in the lead up to EU. Also the pressure to go monthly might be leading them to development challenges (some of the recent bugs smell like too much haste to meet release expectations). If every couple months we get something new and interesting I'll probably be a happy customer for some time to come :) As for what... I guess everyone has different priorities. I'd rather see them get the PrEs done and add more spells/feats to the game than release housing or put out new classes.

From what I understand based on Fernando's comments is that updates will not be the only thing to come out.
Smaller patch between updates may introduce new content or features, but updates will be the new mod so to speak.

Quality vs Quantity!

Id rather see 4 really GOOD updates instead of banging out 6 @ yr that so far have people heading for the door!

I think it should be brought to note that IGN has criticized DDO tremendously in previous reviews, etc. I am glad that a site that has been somewhat 'difficult' in the promotion of this game is now starting to see that not only is DDO a great game but the Turbine team is always trying to improve it. ;)

Keep up the good work guys, even though I may not agree with everything that is done or released, it is apparently working - and I for one, am glad of that. :D

I also agree with Ferd (although begrudgingly), I'd rather see a high quality update than see several 'meh' ones.

And congrats on the good ink! Honestly, seeing the rest of the gaming community come to realize what a gem this game is makes me very happy I didn't give up on it during the rough patch. Granted, I came close - but glad I didn't. :)

Very nice article! It even looks like they've been reading the forums, e.g.:

Even as the veteran players welcome the waves of new and less experienced gamers, some bemoan the fact that it affects the way the game is evolving. For example, players who are used to popping potions in other games think nothing of buying mnemonic elixirs from the DDO store, spamming their spells and chugging down the potions like water, which pains veterans who were raised on the old mana conservation way of thinking.

sounds an awful lot like this thread (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=228091&highlight=chai).

It is really good to see some positive press and for a review to acknowledge other website awards that DDO has won.

I think it was a very useful review and provided a great summary background for all the non DDOers out there.

I hope there is more press soon!

I remember seeing in this that apparently, adding 4 quests in the level 13-18 range will "effectively provide enough content to get to level 20".

While it is theoretically possible to get to level 20 without even buying anything in the Turbine store if you use unrealistic ideas, is it REALLY possible for just 4 quests to get a pure F2P to level 20 without spending a single Turbine Point on anything? And when I say this, I don't talk about buying points or even grinding them, im talking about getting to level 20 without even spending a single non-purcashed point on adventure packs.

It's only sorta grinding, but from memory you get a fair chunk of tp from the first 50 or so favor on each server, so you could probably do that on each server, get enough from that and just levelling your character to buy the vale adventure pack and get to 20 :)

also, I'm pretty sure that this pack broke 1k favor for free quests, which is a lot of TPs, especially if you do them and then build a few more characters.

I like this part in the article. To me it means the reviewer didn't just play the game but also read the forums. Seems like a thorough and fair review to me.
