Why would I take a monk over any other dps/tank in a group? Please keep in mind that pretty much the whole player vase of this game is f2p or mostly new p2p.

They attack extremely quickly (handwraps are the fastest attacking weapons in the game right now). All of their saves have the best progressions and they can get healing amp so it makes them fairly durable. Monks can get among the highest ACs with the right gear while not really sacrificing much in the way of DPS. Dark path monks can get the 500-point strike. Light path monks self-heal like a mofo with fists of light. They get evasion at level 2, and improved evasion at 9 (even before a rogue can!)
If you need a versatile, durable, hard-to-kill SOB, get a monk!

because MNK is a commonly TRed job and you may get lucky and get a vet that will carry your party. Also at lower lvls MNK can pretty much heal the whole party if you dont have any SP sink jobs/players. I am guessing by your join date you are still at "lower levels" and at "lower levels" MNK pretty much dominates. Now at "end game" MNK really struggles with DPS UNLESS heavily geared and well-built.

One could also ask the same question based on your assumption that the majority of the player base is new/f2p why would you pick any class to join your lfm?
I'd hazard a guess your lfm looks something like this (NEED HEALS NEED SORC FOR THE NUKEZ NEED REAL DPS).
Points to note !class icons excluded bard, wizard, ranger, palladin, rogue -sometimes included when you feel like it and monk thread title speaks for itself .

Because (a) being clobbed to death by blunt objects hurts more than being sliced, and (b) getting killed by an unarmed halfling is one of the most embarrassing ways to die for your enemies.

when I was a light path monk and I used to see the healers with ~25% of their spell points remaining at the end of the last shroud fight (claiming they didn't use any pots), I knew that was all me, or me and the bard who gave them their additional 10% sp cost reduction.

Let me start off with I love monks. It's the only class I have taken over lvl 6. Have even tr'd my dwarf monk I to human and now back to lvl 16. Now saying that, monk are a step child. Yes we can be helpful, but more helpful than some othr class if there of equivalant setup. Meaning not some lousy player or someone with the best hand me downs vs some one that has low end gear. Another words if your wanting dps we loose to barbs Fighters and even rogues. Now if wanting a heal clerics and fvs blow us away too. The closest class I have seen to us monks would be a bard but even they can heal better than us, can buff better than us plus there buffs actually last.

Light path monks have some awesome buffs to offer: 25% less spell points, +2 bonuses to hit, skill checks, and saves that stack with heroism/greater heroism, blur if there isn't a caster in the group with it, and stun immunity (great in ToD now that blasphemy is room wide).
Dark path monks now are much more useful too with their 500 damage ki strike that they can use every 15 seconds assuming the can generate the ki fast enough.

Why not? if the majority is f2p or new p2p, their gear is going to suck compared to a twinked out anything. if you are new and you can't build characters right and you don't play effectively, what is the point of excluding anyone. A monk that gets lost or runs into an ambush that locks out the rest of the party is just a lame as a fighter that gets lost or runs into an ambush that locks out the rest of the party.
I prefer monks over any other melee class because i won't have to baby sit them and make sure i have a cleric or a rogue. I can short man most quests with a few monks in the same time it takes another party to get a cleric even after they've pm'd every level appropriate cleric on the server.

Why choose a monk?
Aside from the reasons listed below:
Ok, I have no hard data for this statement but I think, on average, more monks are VIP than other classes and because of that, they are more likely to have access to the content you are planning to run.
We know that all monks are at a minimum premium because they had to pay to get the class. Generally speaking, I think premium players that are short on TP won't buy monks because monks are a costly class (gear-wise) to play.
Because of those points, I think most monks out there are either VIPs or premium players that are not on a tight TP budget. Because of this I think you are less likely to pick up a monk that does not have access to the content you want to run.
Also, if you have "a thing" against f2p players, choosing a monk is a good way to go as well.

This is why I made a Bow using FIGHTER :D
Monks: all around decent if played well... some nifty tricks... though some should be stripped away and re-thought... Phoenix line comes to mind... too costly for something that could be replaced with Pots

non-technical answer would be:
- because monks can be fun to play and people who are having fun playing, who are also good people/players get let into my groups before grumpy people who can put out epic quality dps.
Technical answer
- monks bring a lot to the table, they have great party buffs that dont cost sp and have unlimited use per day. Anti-stun, anti-crit, lower sp cost, combat bonuses, mass cure lights, curse of healing. They also have higher AC's, super fast rate of attack, 500 pt damage attacks, insta-kills, raise dead, widest range of combat abilities in a melee without having to change weapons.
Monks can really round out a party, the only problem comes in the form of people who dont take advantage of all these abilities. If I had 1 tank and had a choice of accepting another tank or a monk, the monk would appeal to me more. "Tanks" have little to no healing ability and really, outside of special gear, can only swing a sword hard and fast. That does nothing to help anyone whos low on sp already.

not only do they not use SP, they dont even count as magic - the amount of times i've run quests with beholders in and had to explain that, yes, i CAN buff a blur, or give some healing, or whatever without them being dispelled... ditto for the the healing dragonmarks

While all this is true it is also slightly misleading because monks do not have the buffs and raise dead that you mention if they also have the 500pt damage attack. I wish we did. I'm going to miss the buffs if and when I go dark path.

I think you would have to play one yourself to see why you would want one. I love my monk. It took me a little bit to figure out the best way to use my strikes/finishers. I don't have the uber equipment, other than the high level eq you start to get at lvl 18+. I may not do the dps that the rest of the melee word does, but I can do back flips, which is waay more important. From what I understand, you should have 32 points builds. Mine is a 32 point build. It is also nice to be able to get, or have, a few tomes available. Monks need several stats raised to higher levels and it can be expensive. I am not saying you can't run a 28 pt build, I am saying you may not enjoy it as much.
I have played this, my original fighter, a barbarian, and a couple of rogues. The barb is more gear/money dependent than the monk. Kinda like a prima dona, it needs this, or it needs that. Freaking potion drinking machine.
The fighter is my first character. It was fun, but it gets kinda repetitive, and he is a total 28 pt newbie gimp. I screwed him up several different ways. Hopefully I will be able to Greater T:R him and fix my newbness.
Rogues are a little harder to get a handle on, for me at least. I had a tough time figuring out my place. I think I can manage one now that I have experience playing a monk. You certainly don't want to pull much agro on either of those classes.
I haven't tried a caster yet. It seems like it would be complicated to use all the spells. I may try a WF Sorc at some point.

My philosophy is to allow every class the chance at getting into my groups. The class doesn't make or break the group, the players do.
I had one group that had no dedicated healer, just a paladin, wizard, rogue, two monks, and a bard. We had no problems stay alive once I started spamming my group heal when I could. The bard said she was only healing herself.
