View Full Version : A little perspective

Since update 3, and at an increasing rate for the last two months, the tone of the forums has been very negative. Looking around I see complaint after complaint, people from one group or another belittling people from another group, people enraged over perceived slights, people threatening to cancel over a bug fix that hasn't come, etc., etc.

Yet, when I log in to the game and talk to people in my PUGs, or talk on guild chat, or watch the general chat channels, I don't see any of this. I see people talking about the game, talking about what they like and what they want to see, and generally having a good time. It makes me wonder, why the disparity? I suppose the people who aren't happy playing the game come here instead to complain. It would be nice to see more positive posts on the forums, but by the forums' very nature, that's probably not going to happen.

For those who are here to complain, I'd urge you to remember that this is a game. The sole purpose is to while away a few hours in an enjoyable manner. If the game is causing rage, anguish, depression, perhaps you should look for some perspective. There are far more important things in life, and there are endless entertaining diversions to pursue. The people IN the game seem to have found that perspective, I hope the people here can too.

Because people like to complain and measure e peen on forums rather than when they have real contact with others even via voicechat.

The tone of these forums have been mostly negative for years. There are spikes and lulls but the ranting and whining is mostly limited to the forums and not in game. For that, at least, I am grateful.

Perspective can be a tricky thing...

To you, their complaints may seem silly, or over trivial things. But, in their perspective - it's worth getting upset over. I'm sure that there have been things in your life that have upset and angered you that may seem like small potatoes to other people - but it still made you upset.

Yes, it's all a matter of perspective. Problem is - people can look at anything and see things differently. To me - a lot of complaints is indicative of a lot to complain about.

And don't forget the age old addage: " A *****ing Sailor, is a Happy Sailor." It is usually when things are quiet that you have the most to worry about.

I'm not so sure, it's pretty hard to get me upset. I can't disagree with the principle, but my whole point is that some of the posters here need to re-evaluate their perspective. Complaining is one thing, and a healthy thing at that. Vitriol, prejudice, and fury are another thing and, frankly, completely out of proportion to the significance of the game.

Or... it is indicative of a lot of people.

Vitriol, prejudice, and fury are another thing and, frankly, completely out of proportion to the significance of the game.Again, this just depends on how you look at the situation. While you or I may label the complaints that way - those doing the complaining may look at the situation a totally different way and see their complaints as perfectly justified.

Perspective tends to be different, depending on where one stands.
Or... it is indicative of a lot of people. And when that lot of people are complaining about the same things - it is indicative of a problem that has angered a lot of people. So - that's a wash.

Your right, perspective is a good thing. But, your perspective is not the only one. It does not mean the other perspective is any more right or wrong than yours - it's just different.

This forum is absolutely no different from any other mmo forum I've read since the genre began. Although it is perhaps a bit tamer. (Fenye and Tanari's wild ride.. anyone?)
Its all good fun.

Absolutely, but the key question is, are the complaints actually in fact about the subject at hand, or is it a transference from other issues, elsewhere or in outside life. Heck, playing an online MMO itslef might be to escape from/cope with those issues.

When designing and deploying a multi-user graphical application of this scale and with this audience there's always going to be some level of dissatisfaction, and the forums are a lighning rod for it. There's a lot of hidden compelxity here both with the people and the technology.

LOL , dude , seriously , You sound like my brother. LOL give it a rest. Go hug a tree , save a whale , or do something thats more time consuming and will make you feel better than watching all the people in a forum gripe and complain.

I get so sick of the flower child attitude , thats half the **** problem with this world , no one has any backbone. Everyone wants to just let things go etc etc. Fecking make me puke already.

You right , this is a game , one that all of us enjoy kicking the s**t out of mobs over and over , would be even better if there was blood and lots of gore to go with it , hell , throw in some nudity as well , wait , AOC tried that and failed lol. Ok then , well we can still kick the s**t outta stuff I guess =)..............

It does not have anything to do with a e peen either , has to do with control , dominance , the ability to lead people in an efficient manner , talk to any old EQ vet and they will all tell you the same thing , strict raid guidelines led to success , not failure. Even if it was just a game...................we got s**t done , period.

Forums are here to talk on , weather it be good or bad , ugly or nice , true or false. Its all on a forums cause people are human and want to see trouble brewing , and strife. Thats what sells , how many reality shows are on TV now? If we all lived in a care free world where no one had any conflict , how gd boring would that be? lol really **** boring................

oh and for those reading this , this guy wants us , that are in the forum , to take on the same positive attitude he sees in the game. LOL How many of us here are not playing DDO? OK , I can do that , cause when I'm in DDO , I'm positively gonna beat the **** out of every mob I see , and destroy it till all thats left is only a few pixels on the ground. Thats the same thing I plan to do on the DDO forums , much like I did your post right now =)................ Peace.................

I'm reminded of that joke where the kid isn't talking long past the age he should be talking so his parents take him to all sorts of doctors to see why and can't find anything wrong. Then one day someone makes his hot dog wrong and the kid bursts out swearing about it. When his parents finally recover and ask him why he suddenly started talking now, he says 'Up until now, everything was fine.'
