View Full Version : What Server Should I Start On? You Tell Me!

I'm going to begin playing soon on a free account (I liked the game when I played years ago and want to give it another shot). My dillema, however, is that I'm fairly casual with how busy life is these days and I've found I quite enjoy being able to roleplay a bit when I log on.
One of the major factors in determining a good server to roll on would one where I might find guilds interested in RP or RP events. Also I hope the server has a generally friendly atmosphere so I can learn the game easily and in a fun way : )
If anyone has any suggestion for me please let me know and write a short bit about your suggested server choice.
Thanks so much!

Anything but thelanis. Good server with an awesome player base; also has over-inflated prices and attracts a lot of F2P jerks being the first server on the list.
Try asking in the server forums if you're into RP.
Edit: THIS (http://forums.ddo.com/forumdisplay.php?f=48) forum might help
Edit 2: Nevermind, F2P are restricted
I know Thelanis has a RP population and is normally quite friendly - don't forget that you will find your occasional a--hole where ever you end up - and will give you a hand as long as you are willing to pull your share of the load and are respectful. This normally goes both ways, and will happen on whatever server you choose.
I'm not sure about RP groups on Cannith and Orien, who are newer servers. They might prove interesting to start new characters, but it might be a bit more difficult to find RP groups over there. Again, someone might come in and tell me this is completely false and that the RP community of Orien is thriving...
The best advice I could give you is probably to not restrict yourself to only one server, and explore a few before choosing one for a more permanent basis. This way, you get to meet more people and gather more Turbine Points, that you can then spend on adventure packs or other goodies in the Turbine Store...

Again, someone might come in and tell me this is completely false and that the RP community of Orien is thriving...The Doom Brigade (www.thedoombrigade.eu) is a casual lite RP guild on Cannith (lite meaning not IC all the time). There's also an RP channel "Wayfinders" here. I'm sure other servers have their corner for RP people as well.
I'd pick Cannith or Orien since there are relatively more newer players on those. The suggestion to scout around on different servers is also a nice one, easy TP is always good for a ftp player. Might be easier to get into touch with like minded players through the forums, though.
Personally, I would have avoided Sarlona if I had known it was overrun with Chinese players. If you value being able to communicate with other people in PUGs, I'd say stay away from Sarlona.
Sarlona is also mostly anti-RP (thank god, it does have some upsides).

your timezone is also important - there are a lot of europeans on Thelanis and I heard some on Cannith too.
Also note Orien was opened in September 2009 and the newest Cannith opened a few months after that.

If you are RP and/or Guild driven, I'd suggest posting a note looking for a RP guild in the guild section of the forum. You'll find good and bad where ever you go, and while some people dislike this or that server, others love it. Let the guild you choose determine where you go.
While I have toons on all servers, Sarlona has been my main server for 2+ years, and I really enjoy it. There are Chinese, but it is not overrun with them, and most are very competent players.

sorry to nit pick but orien was the latest to open not cannith
and like most of us said most severs have a good rp population just depends normaly on what time of day your on and who you happen to get a group with

If I were you, I'd roll up on Thelanis.
On Thelanis there is a very special guild named Legion who is extremely warm and open to new players. In fact, I think they have open recruiting in this very month of Valentine's Day.
The best person for you to contact when you get to Thelanis is Renegade. He's super busy, so if he doesn't answer right away, just be persistant. Keep sending tells and PMing him...it will pay off in the end.
Good Luck!

Since you're new you probably wanna start on a server with a lot of Junior Varsity players. I'd recommend Argonnessen. :p
When you're ready to move up to the Big Leagues, Khyber's your end destination! :D

I started playing on Orien in November. Since it's new I found that I wasn't too far behind everyone else and I've enjoyed my time there so far.

Thelanis is great, until you get to high levels. Then all the people you meet are uninteresting power-gaming ones with the same toons who talk on their low mic, expecting you to lower the game's sounds in order for you to hear their conversations about how someone's friend ate his own shoes....

Wow, shoe eating friends? Thelanis sounds like my kind of server, Orien has never furnished me with that kind of excitement.

Personally, I prefer Sarlona. Everyone I've encountered has been great to party with...in some cases, I need to choose between three or four parties made up completely of people I've met here, who are all laid-back people. I've never found a power-gamer here, but there is a lack of P2P toons. I'm alright with that though, since I'm F2P.
Just throwing that out there.

I honestly can't tell if you're being serious here...

Yes yes yes, please ignore the good server...yes...
Thelanis home of the mutated butterflys... We get stuff done over here, though I must admit most of us vets over here are real jackasses at times ;)
Though if I were you and didn't want to feel too outclassed i'd hop on orien or cannith.
