You can group with and keep track of like minded players and friends.

The good thing about guilds, as that you will not have to get a PUG anymore if your guild is big enough to have people on at different times. Plus you group with the same people and get a good feel for each others playstyle and personality and even get some new friends out of it. I realise that you can accomplish this through a friends list, but guilds are a bit more fun. You can make a website and interact on the site as well. You can also organize events, give prizes on contests you hold, recruit and meet new people, etc..

The best part for me is all the new people I've met through my guild community. It's nice to be part of a stable, long term guild. I'll be playing with the same friends I've met in ddo and other games, when we eventually move on to the next game. Imho, you miss out on a lot of what makes mmo's fun if you don't get involved with a guild.
It's somewhat like the difference in sports of having organized teams that play and practice together, and a neighborhood pick-up game.
It's easy enough, if not a little frustrating running with PUGs (pick-up groups) at low level, with high level, especially raid content, it's at best case chancey.
The reasons will become quite clear as your game play progresses.
So run with the pugs for a while, eventually you will probably end up in a group that mostly belongs to one guild. Depending on the guild, you should get a clear idea real fast.
Come back here and post after running a couple of weeks, good luck!
