So I was running a female elven lowbie over the weekend, and I get this:
RandomPerson: hey cutie
Me: hey
(I'm wondering if this is a friend messing with me.)
RandomPerson: so m or f?
(I'm still wondering who the heck this is.)
Me: both actually
RandomPerson: ?
Me: married and female
RandomPerson: married huh?
Me: yep, happily

Any of you ladies (the real kind, not the cute elf kind with the deep voices) get this?

I'm male, but one of my first characters was a female human cleric (I always pick male melee, female caster, don't know why, just feels right)
During my first month when I was still unknown and unguilded and I didn't have a mic at the time, and I must have had some guy try to pick me up at least once a day. On the positive side, if I just ignored it and didn't comment at all when they flirted they often gave me free stuff to try and gain my favor. :p
There was even one guy who I ran with a lot who specifically told me not to tell him if I was male or female right after he flirted the first time lol.

havent had anyone send me a tell just had the cassanova types once they heard my voice try to pick me up. Sometimes its funny sometimes its creepy most of the time if someone gets out of line I put them in their place if not my guild mates are very protective as well. Ive lucked out though I really dont put myself out there if I flirt I keep it amongst friends I feel safe doing so with.
But yeah it happens most of the time it makes me giggle.

I myself am not a female nor do I play female characters, but my first guild thought I was a girl for a couple of months (in my defense, I had not hooked up my mic just yet). I never got any such comments from them, but most of them were ladies themselves.
I can't comment on random tells specifically, however there have been three or four times where I've been in a group with a female player using voice chat who gets hit on by that random pugger (sometimes semi seriously). It can be funny at times, but usually it's just annoying.
I just ALWAYS assume the person behind the half naked elf chick is a guy... because it usually is. In those few cases where it's not, I try to suppress my awkward geek tendencies and be as normal as possible. :D

I haven't had anyone hit on me since I started playing again in October.
Unless you count that guy the other day who was a level 4 pally or such and invited my level 20 FvS to his group and kept telling me he was ready to protect and defend me.
I decided to humor him (he wanted to do a quest after all) and took him into Kobold Assault on Elite (which I needed for favor anyway). Between my Blade Barriers and Hezrou, I think the pally only got 4 kills :p.
I did /squelch him though, for a day, because he wouldn't leave me alone. Haven't heard from him since.
And I can't remember enough details about way back, but I doubt I had any, if many, happen then either.

i knew a guy who would start a new toon, unguilded, and act 'in type' as a girl, with no mic.
He would get people to give him all sorts of gear, throw him money, etc... amazing.
He would be coddled by these guys trying to show off and was able to just sit in a dungeon and not do anything to get completion..

Not here but in WoW I had an experiance. I was in the Lowbee Dwarf area with a female dwarf when this low level gnome came up to me and started to follow me. Then on General chat started to discribe my...ehem...huge tracts of land and how seccy I was on my character while I was questing. I asked him to stop it, then I reported it and said so, all on general.
Then I was a wh*ore who "slept" with my bear ( I was a hunter). I reported to the GMs again, and he continued to stalk me for over an hour relentlessly. THe other players nearby thought it was amusing. I never got a response form the GMs there.
Wonder why I don't play it, and have a low opinion of the game.

I haven't had problems in this game but I did playing EverQuest way back when it first came out. I was 13 yrs old and when the guys found out they sorta just left me alone. When I was 15 and 16 and still playing it, the young teen guys started up with me and I had a few problems with a few of them. But after a while they stopped and just became online game friends.

I always find it a bit creepy to play a female avatar, so I don't think I actually ever have, but each to their own.

Well Im a female, and my three chars are female, but for some reason everybody calls me *he* in-game. I ususally don/t care, but sometimes it gets really annoying and I have to inform my fellow partymembers that I actually am a chick :p
In EverQuest I had a friend (female) and we were close enough that I was logged into her account/character on many occasions; her main was a sexy EQ wood elf. While logged in as her, I once got a tell from some random stranger nearby... I replied to him "don't you know that any 'girl' that plays this game is, in real life, 400 pounds and named Bob or John or somesuch?". That was the last I heard of him.

I joined a Tempest Spine run on my cleric a few months back and piped up over voice chat about how I'm new and this was my first run. I didn't say anything after that. A few minutes into the raid I get a tell from a guy in the raid telling me I should speak more since my voice and accent was "cute"
Kept me from saying anything at all again till we finished and I left with a "thank you for the run, was fun" :D

Because, as someone posted above, there are no females playing DDO or computer games. There are some men that are quite convincing though.
And as long as I continue to think this way I will NEVER have to worry about doing/saying anything stupid. And not my normal stupid things, I'm talking about those forum posts of in game chats where the "girl" reveals after several months that they are actually a guy and they shame/name all the wierdo's. I haven't seen it here, but I did in Planetside on Werner. Very strange and it taught me to just imagine everyone that plays the game is a guy. Besides, it's not like I'm ever going to meet any of you people in RL, so what do I care if you are a boy or girl?? Let's just play the game and have fun in our escapism.
Cheers,

A long time ago I pugged with someone who was new to DDO and really chatty on voice asking lots
of questions on how things work. So I decided to invite them to the guild as they were friendly enough.
Embarrassingly I wasn't sure if they were a boy or a girl. The voice was high enough to be a girl or a young boy
with a squeeky voice. In the end a guildie found out it was a boy - I never had the nerve to ask what sex they were - not that it mattered apart from not being able to say he/she but they :D

You two really should have been teleported to Twilight Forge by me over the weekend. I wish I would have tried it but you know I just wanted to get that shroud over seeing as I need to run a bloody ton of them now to get more stuff crafted for my army of Guys and Girls.
As for the male/female avatar thing, for me it's a how I envision the character I am making. One of the best examples of this is Cammie. A cute little halfling woman who uses her cuteness to get cheaper things from vendors and uses it to make people think she's no threat at all until... PEW PEW PEW... the repeater strikes them down.

Female here, with mostly (but not all) female characters. When I'm not soloing, I play almost exclusively with guildies who are RL friends.
Once, a while back, a random person in-game asked if I was really a girl. When I said yes, they said, "So...what are you wearing now?" to which I replied, "I'm also a mom whose kids play DDO. Get lost or get reported." He (I'm assuming it was a he) logged off quickly.
My husband plays mostly female characters also, and no one has ever asked, implied, or assumed that he was anything but a man.

Back when I was playin EQ, I made a Female Halfling Rogue as my first ever online character. It's what I always rolled up on any other game, such as Baulders Gate or Icewind Dale. I didn't think anything of it, and that game has no voice chat. I'm pretty articulate and "bubbly" when text-based chatting, I always put the emoticons in for smiles and such. Apparently that translates to Female Gamer, and this one guy saw me in the newbie area for Halflings and helped me out with some cash and some gear I could use. He spent the next year or more trying to cyber me when he was drunk I assume, I always politely declined. I never told anyone my real sex if they didn't ask cause I thought it was funny, and guys are always willing to help you if they think you're a hot and polite chick LOL! It wasn't until I joined a raiding guild at the end of my career that people started to find out I was a guy (my main guild knew of course).
All I can say is, I'm glad there is voice chat now in game. Also, the reason I moslty play female characters is 1)Why would I want to stare at a guy's butt the whole time I'm playing and 2)if I do play a guy, its a tank class.
when I was logged into my wife's toon....was kinda funny when I said +4 Mithral Fullplate of Lesser Acid Resistance....
and if you meant me, I'm sitting here in my boxers resisting the urge to scratch myself you idiot....same response, left group and logged out almost immediately.....does give me some appreciation for what you gals have to deal with tho, I have a couple of female toons, but I make sure and speak right away in pugs to make sure there is no gray area.
Don't understand the urge to turn online games into online dating services......if you need a date, get off the computer and go out, if not, shut up and play the dang game :)

Had a male guildy once that was gay and would not quit hitting on other male guildies. I have gay friends in real life and since I am not gay, they seem to know not to hit on me and be friends. Why couldn't this guy get the clue. Of course, last I heard, he paid Turbine to change his toon's names because I might have told him to get a life somewhat forcefully. Heard he was scared of me. Funny, since I live in Ky and he lives in California. Jokes between friends, flirts between friends, all cool. Pestering someone, making rude comments to someone you don't know or you know does not accept the comments, not cool and person needs a clue.
As someone said above, this is an adventure game, not a sex game or sex chat room, they have those somewhere else and I paid to play a DnD adventure game.

I'm a female with all female characters. I do use voice chat. I can't say I've had anyone specifically try to "pick me up" but I have had the following experiences:
1. Been given lots of stuff
2. Flirted with me in party (note, most of the time I play with my husband, Freeman, who seems to find this very amusing, especially when he's in party).
3. Been told I will be "protected" by a melee class in the party (usually while on my cleric).
When this does happen it is usually from a younger player. I find most of the older guys are more interested in loot :p Most of this tends to happen at lower levels but I was in the Shroud the other day with my FvS when someone gave me a small shard that I wanted (even though someone else in the party needed one too) and told me he wished he could give me some of the medium shards he had, but alas they were bound. :) I never turn down free loot. :D
I honestly just find it amusing. It's sweet in a way. No one has gotten so bad that I have to squelch them. Since most of my characters are high level, I tend to avoid most it since I tend to run with my guild or guilds/people I know. Freeman does complain that I always get free stuff though.

But nah in all the games ive enjoyed only DDO is tame when it comes to over zealous guys and there are a lot of really decent guys who play and know better then to go gaga over women. Can't resist chiming in.
The first and last time I played a female character was in '92. I was playing a MUD (for those who don't know, that means not only no voice chat, there was just scrolling text to see who was who). It was great for a while, lots of free stuff, lots of help leveling... one guy in particular (whose characters' name was Arvon), was very helpful and attentive
Then one day my housemate (who really was female) who also played the game, came up to me and said "you have to tell Arvon you're really a guy".
"Why?" I asked
"Because he's flying out here next week to visit me".
They didn't even invite me to the wedding :P (although in their defense they did live together long enough before marriage for us to be pretty far apart)

As a guy that's plays a few female toons, I have had the occasional "hey babe, where are you from" tells in the harbor. Seems a pretty desperate move by a desperate person.
However, having a woman in the party does seem to liven it up a bit. I enjoy it when one of them starts talking "nerdy" to us in the party... :) That, and it's cute when you hear one rant about "that **** kobold rogue just backstabbed me. ME! He can't do that to me. No one touch him, I'm going to F him up now...". *heh*
However, when I was doing SOS once with a mostly other guild run, they invited a female drow sorc that was in their guild into the party. I didn't think much about it until we started voice chatting and she spoke. Her voice.... her voice was like.... if you dipped a rainbow into a chocolate river, then sprinkled it with pure virgin sugar, added butter rich carmel on top and finished it off with heaps of glucose on top. I have NEVER heard a woman that sounded so "girly" in my whole life, even when I've heard other women try to act so sweet. Her voice was so perky, bubbly, and high it jerked my spine a couple of times and I did a few body shudders. I had to send a tell to one of the party guys in her guild if that was REALLY her voice. He told me yeah, is there something wrong? I said, I've never heard anyone talk like that before. He said yeah, it takes some getting used to, doesn't it? I laughed at him, I was glad I wasn't the only one that felt that way. Still, she was an awesome player but one of the few times I wish I hadn't heard a woman talk in party chat... :)

I started a group and when it was full I announced (in voice) that we were heading for the door, etc.
Even though I am male, all my clerics have been female.
One of the newbie players responded with "who said that?".
I replied "The leader".
In a slightly hushed voice the new player replied "I don't understand, I keep hearing a MAN's voice!!".
I was speechless, ROFL.

+1 Rep for such an awesome description of a voice. I had that experience with a clan mate in Runescape looong ago. she used to run "Boss Runs" with me and a few friends for a few weeks until one day she said she finally got Teamspeak and aked if she could join our TS. We said sure and when she came on.. See description above.. was almost unsettling how such an angelic voiced character could rip apart Bosses like a German Panzer... and oooh when she giggled after dropping the boss with a final shot... I wonder if she switched to DDO... cuz that description is soooo familiar!
EEEEP I hope I didn't offend DrWhoFan. I hold Women.. ALL WOMEN even the ones that have ****ed me off (at some point) in the HIGHEST realms of respect.

It's so cute to see how you guys get over female voices lol. He did do a great job describing her voice lol. Ya know we do the same thing :D m not the type to get all giddy and girly over a guys voice..with an exception of a few  lol. There are a few voices that stand out for sure on Thelanis..and a few over on Khyber. I saw a post recently by someone name Spell..it seems as though he is THE voice...too bad I havent gotten to hear it lol.
I can think of one female voice on Thelanis that makes me want to bang my head on a wall :(..seriously! I'd rather hear nails scratching on a board.

I think the main reason there aren't that many women players is because not enough men have gotten enough women interested in the game.
When I come across a female player I say, "so was it your boyfriend/husband or brother that got you into the game?" And I've had 1/100 people answer something other than those two choices.

I know it may seem as much of a surprise that women play this game.
But some of us came because we like dungeons and dragons
Ive always stated that im a nerdy girl have been all my life, ive also been what was classified as a "Tom boy" had more guy friends then girls blah blah. Even though I do have my feminine side at times I do like to game have since playing on my dad's Atari system then finally getting my first console an original NES.
I was more of a Legend of Zelda fan then mario love rpg love puzzles love games that made me think.
Yes I didnt get into pen and paper before I met my ex husband only because of the stigma my family put on Dungeons and Dragons but was well after I left my ex that I found ddo.
so yeah many women maybe brought in by boyfriends the like, some of us just want to game and we found ddo on our own. I know I know our fragile little female minds shouldnt be able to do so, guess im just not normal lol

Woot! My ego just got a boost! (I am happily married, also... to the OP.)
I am glad that these stories are relatively rare. Most of the DDO playerbase is a pretty good crowd. Of course there will always be bad apples, but it seems that other games have more of them.

I tried to get my wife to play, but she hates video games. She also believes that there are no girls playing. She's crazy, but I love her. Just to make her mad though, I got my daughter playing ;-)

Me too :) Although my husband did sort of get me into the DDO itself. We played PnP before DDO for a few years but we had never played a MMO before. We had played NWN together and he mentioned that DDO was coming out and I said for D&D I would be willing to try a MMO (I was mostly opposed to the idea of buying a game and then paying to play it since I had only ever played console/PC games before).
I too love Zelda, am a "Tom Boy", and have traditionally had more male friends than female ones. I do have my girly moments though :) Love a good craft fair and wear feminine clothes :)

^_^ See just like Drwhofan as well we women do exist we may not be like your run of the mill type girls who think dnd and gaming is guy only we are the girls who sat in campaigns with you and enjoyed ourselves and found ourselves drawn to ddo because its Dungeons and Dragons.
We are out there guys but just like you just want to game, if I want to date I will put myself out there in the real world where I know for sure if im dating a knight or a troll :p I have seen couples spawn from games and online but not what im looking for. I wanted to post a pic here, but I don't have time to photoshop the offending word out, so I will describe it instead :)
So a very famous male pornstar is sitting in front of his computer. He is wearing a white t shirt, looking up over the monitor with a knowing smile. On his t shirt are the words, 'I'm the 18 year old girl you (somethinged) off to in that chatroom last night'.
But seriously, gender of the player should not ever be a concern in this game. If you are on here looking for a date, you probably would be better served on eharmony, lavalife, or one of the other dating sites out there.

yeah my hubbi is more of a fps gamer to, and I can't seem to get him interested in this game, or any fantasy mmo so I have to divide my gaming time between ddo and left 4 dead  not that left for dead is a bad game its just after the first couple hundred hours of playing through the same stuff it is not so much fun anymore, especially when I really would rather be playing ddo:(
but fortunately we found borderlands and I have to admit when I am playing that I don't miss ddo as much:D

Agreed, guys are so weird when it comes to girl gamers and hearing them speak in voice chat. They really believe they have the monopoly on gaming , i prefer to keep people guessing in game, when they say "hey dude" or "hey man" i say "hello" ,
not worth the bother to correct people imho.
as far as voices that get me giddy it would have to be aussie accents :o

And I've been hit on. Most of the time, I laugh and shrug it off, but there have been a few times that I've been creeped out. Please don't ask for my city of residence multiple times, if I didn't tell you the first time, I won't tell you the second time. :)
I've been gaming for years now, so it really doesn't bother me when some guys get their knickers in a twist as soon as a female voice rings out through their speakers (or headset). :)
Either way, we womenfolk (:D) on this game don't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. And that's just fine with me. :)

We all know that there are no such things as female gamers. Those of us with high pitched voices have got to be 12 yr old boys who haven't quite hit puberty yet. :D
When I come across a female player I say, "so was it your boyfriend/husband or brother that got you into the game?" And I've had 1/100 people answer something other than those two choices.
Although my estranged husband bought the game, he convinced me to let him buy it cause it was Dungeons and Dragons. I had been playing pnp for years, moved and he found a way to get us back into it. Except I soon took over the account so he ended up having to get a computer for himself and his own gaming account. I normally one talk in groups when running with at least a couple of guildies. Since I have vent going in the background even then I don't find I have to say much in group. I have been told before don't take this the wrong way but you have a cute voice, or a pretty voice or such but really I haven't gotten a whole lot of special treatment just for being female.
Dose being a Warforged M or F matter????

Here are some lines I use as come backs if a person does the a/s/l stuff in general to me on the internet.
Are you female?
when I get that question I normally give the following
1. Well at least since the operation..
2. Well till the operation to make me more manly
3. Yes for a good 72 years now sonny
4. No but they say I can pass for one real easily come see my shows in the Village
5. Yes do you mind a beer gut?
6. Yes but some of the voices in my head are male :)
Sex
1. Not now im on my off time
2. Yes but not with you
3. Doing it right now
4. I would but youd have to get checked after ive had a fun life
5. Let me go ask my mom and dad...
Location
1. You know that state yeah that one funny shape state well I live close to that state but not so close.
2. By lots of water
3. wherever my mind tells me im at
4. In your closet
Now some guys will laugh at that some may try to cuss you out and eeep ive had guys turned on by both the grandma thing and a stubble joke I made (no Im not hairy though lol) So these may or may not work there really are some creepy guys on the interweb lol.

So I was running a female elven lowbie over the weekend, and I get this:
RandomPerson: hey cutie
Me: hey
(I'm wondering if this is a friend messing with me.)
RandomPerson: so m or f?
(I'm still wondering who the heck this is.)
Me: both actually
RandomPerson: ?
Me: married and female
RandomPerson: married huh?
Me: yep, happily
/squelch
Any of you ladies (the real kind, not the cute elf kind with the deep voices) get this?
First off I am a male, but play all female characters for the T&A factor I guess I am shallow like that.
So anyway several years ago I was on my main that the time waiting for some some guildies to finish a quest so we could group. When not questing I like to pass the time dancing naked in one the fountain in the market. Needless to say I was doing just that this particular day when I get a similar tell from a stranger. Now I don't remember what was said exactly but the conversation end with me inviting said person into my party, then me in my best Joe the Plumper voice asking "What you doing tonight sugar?"
I have never seen someone drop so fast. it was major lol.
and P.S. Holy hell Caine is a chick!!!!!!!!!!!!!! mews to me. I always thought she was a prepubescent boy. Oh well you learn something new everyday.

This topic always makes me dumbfounded. If I'm a girl, I am allowed to play Half Life 2. If I am a guy, I can play Tomb Raider. If I play Tekken, I can fight as a guy or a girl. If I'm in an MMO, there's some weird thing where it's an issue for some folks. Why? My DDO characters ARE NOT ME. They are video game characters created by me.
The logic of "you must play your 'real' sex in an MMO" makes about as much sense as being blasted for writing a novel about a guy if you are a girl. Ridiculous.

Quite frankly, I don't blamethem. I have male characters. Have you seen how they run? It looks like they either filled their codpiece with waste product, like a girl, or like a drunken Dwarf. Or all three.
I blame men for this. THey just want more female characters in thegame, no matter who was "behind" the character.

The comment above made me remember a wow thread where the bigoted idiot homophobes were actually trying to require that RL sex be part of your account info, and then lock out the opposite gender in the character creation screen, or some such rot. =)
If it bothers you that much, you're playing the wrong game. Go play Second Life instead =)

Actually, I red a while back that some Asian MMORPG requires people to verify their sex as female, before they can create female characters. I kinda doubt that females get banned from creating male chars.

Verify your gender? Like how?
"Before you can proceed to chracter creation, please place your nether regions in the 'Gender Checker' provided with your Limited Edition boxset."

No, I think the options where telephone them and verify by voice, or send in a copy of your ID.

(I always pick male melee, female caster, don't know why, just feels right)
Hm. Same here.
I've never understood the hangup some people have over RL gender vs. toon gender in video games. Maybe it's because I find the idea that some kind of romantic/sexual relationship blossoming in an MMO so totally absurd. Not that it doesn't happen, but I find it utterly bizarre. It could also be that I GMed a PnP game so regularly had to play female as well as male characters.
