Can't recommend a Samsung 22 inch widescreen enough. It has a 2ms response time. I have had it a couple of years and have no reason to even consider upgrading it, although there is a 24 inch model now but it has a 5 ms response.

I doubt most people would notice the slight smearing/shadowing that LCDs suffer from, but there is something about my eyes that can pick it up and it annoys me a lot so clean, crisp images are a must.

Can't wear contact lenses either as I get visual abberations that I shouldn't really be able to see.

1680x1050 Still feel this is the best overall, because with LCD you really want to stay with native rez's for clear scaling. Higher then that doesn't pay off that much but adds additional strain to your proc/gpu.

I have a 24" HP @1920x1200 and a 21" Samsung @1600x1200 driven by a single 8800GT. It's an older rig, but gets the job done.

Run the game in Windowed mode at just a hair under 1600x1200 so that I have room under it for the task bar on the larger monitor and can still slide the window over to the smaller one for when I'm running both accounts.

I'll never go back to anything under a 30.

At work, I have three 21" flatpanels strung together... and feel crowded. That 1600 pixel height makes an incredible difference.

So in short, yes, I'd say it's definitely worth it. The 30" monitors are still pretty expensive, definitely not the best bang for the buck, but they are awfully nice. Of note, the amount of VRAM becomes rather important at resolutions that large... I don't know what the "minimum" is for a 30", but the 2GB I have on mine handles it well. (Note: not all GTX285s came with 2GB of memory, most were 1GB, I think).

It is mind-blowingly good for gaming. 1920x1200.

Why would I drool over something that would look blurry compared to my monitor?

You have about 600 fewer pixels in both directions, spread out over 26 additional (diagonal) inches.

Think about that... that works out to something like me having 4 pixels in the same space that you have 1.

HDTV is not a good substitute for a computer monitor...

Bought a 24" Gateway LCD (1920x1200) back when they were outrageously expensive (~$600).

My wife was still using a CRT at the time and got jealous, so I had to buy her a 22", which cost several hundred dollars less than mine.

The 24" has excellent resolution (and rotates 90 degrees), but, when looking at how much prices have come down on displays, I regret having paid so much more for the extra 2".

My wife insists that wanting the extra 2 inches was a guy thing and, looking back, it probably was.

Maybe I just didn't notice the difference, since I got new glasses at the same time as I upgraded. But honestly I don't notice any blurry at all. Its all nice and crisp and clear, and big.

I also have a Dell Precision 490 with 8GB of RAM and a ATI FireGL V7200 with 512MB of RAM running a Dell 20" UltraSharp and it is not even close in performance.

That's the funny thing about HDTV... we've had "better than HD" on computers for well over a decade now... that's why computer monitors have always been (and continue to be) more expensive than similarly-sized TVs and HDTVs.

It probably doesn't appear blurry to you at all... but set it next to a 24" monitor at 1920x1080 (same as your max resolution) and you'll be able to see what I'm talking about.

As for the graphics card, it's a ATI 3850 AGP on a 3Ghz Pent 4. DDO runs fine with everything maxed out.

Mind you, there are a few games coming out that want dual core. I think Mass Effect 2 and Bioshock 2 need them. So I guess it's upgrade time soon.

Yep, 10' away will do that. (You should see some difference though, as you're not running the Samsung at 1920x1200... you're running it at the max resolution 1920x1080). And believe me, you'd notice 300 additional pixels on all sides.

HAH!

BTW, not trying to e-peen here. A big HDTV is a lot of fun for playing games on, especially if it scares the bejesus out of your 5-year old. I'm just trying to clear up some rather common misconceptions about comparing HDTVs to computer monitors. Specifically, Monitor::HDTV as HDTV::TV (though not to the same degree).

I have a 14" laptop with 1400 by 1050 res, I use that when traveling and I travel a lot.

At home on my desk I use a 22" samsung (my favorite)

If I want to lounge in a comfy chair I will play on my media pc and a 32" sony bravia tv, but the res is not as good, only 1380 by 760 or something like that.

At work I have a HP L1908w 19" that does 1440 by 900 (yes some times I do play at work)
