Just started playing DDO with a couple of friends and started a barb, then splashed fighter mainly for heavy armor. We have a cleric, bard, and ranger so I was thinkingof putting some rogue on my toon just to have some spot, disable traps etc. Was wondering what the general thought were on this plan. I know i wont be the best of any class but am trying to blend for the group.

Rogue must be taken at level 1. If you want to be able to do locks/traps, there can be no other option.

Multiclassing works very good in DDO. You can get amazing results, many times better then going 'pure'. But you only get good results if you plan multiclass char before you even hit "create" button.

It's conventional wisdom that, if you are planning to splash rogue levels on your char, 1st rogue level must be splashed at lvl 1; reason is quite simple: at lvl 1, rogues get ((8 + INT modifier) X 4) skill points.

Furthermore, barbarians get (4 + INT modifier) skill points per level, fighters only (2 + INT modifier); spots, search, disable device are all cross-skills for fighters and barbarians: it might be hard and expensive keeping them at a decent level.

As Kriogen pointed out, multiclassing should be carefully planned: multiclassing on the fly can often do more harm than good to your characters.

Thus said, if your party really needs someone able to handle traps, it might be a better idea multiclassing the ranger, since rangers and rogues share some skills.
