View Full Version : This makes me feel stupid... >_<

I, for the life of me, can't find any way to send a private message to someone on the forums.

Is there even a way to do this? Asking feels a little degrading for me, but again, I have been entirely unable to find a way to privately contact anyone.

So, "**** u stupid noob" and other similar comments are uncalled for, and unwanted. "Yes." "No." "Yes, do *this, this, this, and this." are all potentially valid for my question.

Go to user CP, and private messages on the left.

Go up to top bar where is says, from left to right:

Dev Tracker/Service Tracker/... /Quick Links/Log Out

Click on Quick Links

Scroll down list and click on Private Messages

And left side there is a list, about half way down it says: Send New Message.

They wouldn't be posting in General Discussion if they hadn't.

Hmm ... I'm pretty sure I never have spent money on the game (US version).
I have spent Turbine points, though, but only in the DDO:EU beta.

Well, I suppose the next time I see someone complaining about non-f2p not getting anything special, I'll tell them that they get to send PMs on the forum. lol. Looks like I just can't win for loosing, not knowing all my restrictions as a f2p...

Private Messages being restricted to paying players just makes me, as someone with 0 disposable income, feel worthless in regards to the forums. Being able to privately contact other members is something that is paramount.

In order to get in contact with someone outside of the game, the only thing I can do is make a topic, which is seen by everyone, just to, say, ask if they can contact Character X in game.

This then leads to EVERYONE that reads it to be able to contact me/them. What I do, I feel, is between myself and player XYZ.

I like having a moderate level of anonymity, making contacts on my own accord, be it accepting friends, or seeking them. ~_~

Sorry this turned into a rant, and possibly even a confusingly worded one. >_<

I'm just premium and I can send/receive PM's on the board, and if you can post in this section, you're at least premium yourself.

Something is limited on Kobold's account - be it a Freep thing or whatever. I don't get a PM option on his drop-down like should happen, and assume it's working the same on his outgoing.

Try this:
Go to your CP, look down the left to Edit Options. Second block down are some check boxes, one of which is enable/disable PMs. Check that to see if it's the issue.

Nope - not true (in regards to the bolded part). This account is non-premium and I can post anywhere on the forums, it may have something to do with having been in the F2P Beta or something - but not all F2P players (non prem) are limited on where they can post.

Edit: Of course I get a PM option in the drop down menu so thats odd.

I think participating in the beta makes your account premium, even if you never spent money.

Only the forum account then.. cause the game account attached to this forum nick is 'Free Play' limited (2 Char slots, plat limit, AH limit, etc).

Alright, alright, OP just wants his/her question answered, does this really have to turn into yet another F2P vs VIP thread?

I just sent OP a PM...

Kobold...maybe you are not logged on? (When I was not logged on to the forums the option to send PM was gone).

Cheers

Actually as far as I can tell I can post in most of the forum sections except the "community" section, even as F2P. Been able to do so from the beginning. I think some forums do limit if I can start a new thread though, I don't remember.

You can also check your reputation point count. I recently (today) noticed that all of a sudden the private message option is open to me, and it's underneath the "Welcome, Vanshilar" box on the upper right. I never noticed it before, and I had been looking for the PM option previously. My reputation count went up from 243 to 271 recently, so its *possible* that you can send PM's as F2P once you have 250 or so reputation points. It's possible that in the same way you can unlock things in-game with enough favor, you might be able to unlock forum abilities (PM, post in different forums) with enough reputation points. But this is sort of speculation, until F2P people start seeing if this matches with their experience and post their reputation count.

(This is how rumors start. This is why people think you must turn around three times before opening a chest.)

I do indeed have a private message now. and I seem to also be able to send them.

Either the authentication hiccup thing has 'unlocked' it, or I just got really awesome, really fast. XD

Kidding aside, I thank you all for the help. As for the 'negative' replies, well, at least you took the time to say something. Even if it was less than helpful in some cases.

Correct or not, it was information for me to think about. When I do start making some disposable income, I'm probably gonna go premium, buy what I want to use, unlock the rest, then actually go VIP. D&D has been good to me over the past, what, 5 years? lol, I think it's time, when I can, to be good right back!

Odds are, when I do go VIP, I'll spend most of my TP on guest passes, and things that will be more beneficial to others, rather than just myself. After a few new haircuts and that stuff for my vanity. ^_^

Hate to say it, but I'm too vain to play a dwarf. XD At least as a PC. ;)

I hope it's not like that "dungeon alert gone" thingy a while ago that they bring back a couple of days later...

You can also look around for an old Stormreach box. The number will work on your account (so you'll be VIP for a month, then drop down to premium), and you can get it cheaper than the $15 a month thing. You can only do it once though.

We're in the process of changing the settings on Free Player accounts to enable them to send private messages, but we want to make sure that it doesn't open the door to spamming not seen since the days of... spam-yore.

You may see some fluctuations in your ability to send and receive PM's, but you can definitely send them now.

I just want to say I do appreciate the lack of spam in game and on the forums. In game, I get one about one per week (and from a different source on my free to play test account which is wierd since I am only on it to bug test things I see on my regular account).

If this opens the door to spam, Leave it alone and let the freebs eat cake (j/k)!

And yes, I should read entire threads before posting. Oh well it gives me a self-improvement goal to work towards.
