View Full Version : Black Screen During Game Play

Dropdown

I have read a few of the posts regarding black screens during game play and it seems many people are having the same issues: the graphics card "stops" working and then "recovers" but leaves the player with only a cursor and a black screen.

My video card is updated to the newest 195 drivers of Nvidia's 8000 series.
I tried underclocking my card as someone suggested, but it did not work.
I've tried changing my resolution to a lower setting, but it did not work.
I tried the fixes for those who were getting screens after just logging in.

Nothing is working. I sometimes have problems logging in as the game will crash right after the launcher launches the actual game, but that might be another story. I suspect the two might be tied together somehow.

I seem to notice that the black screens only happen during actual quests - while in a dungeon. Occasionally I'll be able to get back on after a shut down and still play, but, like tonight, I tried at least 5 times with it going to a black screen before I could even move. Switching from full screen to windowed or vice versa only seems to make it happen more (or just not fix the problem).

I'm running an Nvidia 8600GT. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'd like to add that I've played the game for a long time - on and off since the initial launch in '06. I don't remember having this problem at all until the latest update. I think I will contact Turbine support about this as well, but if anyone can assist me here that would be tremendous too.

Same thing here.
I have Nvidiea GTX 285 - Factory Settings
Windows Vista Ultimate 64
Intel i7
12 GB RAM

I have had three crashes tonight. This is getting really annoying. Some times it crashes to black screen and the machine is locked totally. Other times it goes to black screen and the sound and mouse still works but it is black screen. ALT-F4 kills the DDO app and the drivers recover.

Here are some reports from tonight's crash -

Yeah I guess my post isn't going to help. Those crashes were from Dragon Age Origins. I had some serious problems with that game and fixed it with a Vista SP upgrade.

I'd like to add that I've played the game for a long time - on and off since the initial launch in '06. I don't remember having this problem at all until the latest update.

If nothing changed in your system other than "DDO updated itself", this could be a game file corruption issue. Are you using TDM? If so, have you used the "validate and repair" option?

If you need to positively rule out game file corruption, you can:

- Uninstall TDM, and DDO
- Delete the DDO folder in program files manually (necessary step, I don't think the uninstall gets rid of it all)
- Reinstall DDO from "full download", NOT using the TDM

It's a painful process, as you need to download about 1.5GB of installer. I had to do this once. Haven't looked back at the TDM - it's more trouble than it's worth.

Checking the event logger, the game is causing NVLDDMKM Nvidia driver to stop respending regularly. It seems like specific texture sets cause the game to crash (black screen, no recovery, have to ALT-F4 out). I can run through an outdoor location care-free for hours, but if I enter any of the sewer texture-based dungeons, I will crash out multiple times within a few minutes. The Deneith sewers are particularly crash heavy.

Assuming it was texture-based, I tried changing to the standard res textures instead of high-res, and the game still stuttered (went to black screen) but it didn't last as long and the driver eventually recovered and I could continue playing.

I'm no hardware tech, but it seems like a coder with a debug version of the game running with the hardware many people are reporting the problem with could solve this. I think maybe it has something to do with large amounts of video ram, but I could be mistaken.

Guys,
I'm having the exact same problem.

It started for me about 1-2 weeks ago. Was infrequent at first, happening about ever 2-3 hours but it has since become more frequent - I'm barely in game for 5 minutes before it occurs now.
As far as "where" it happens there doesn't appear to be much of a pattern. It happens in all zones, city zones, wilderness zones and in quests. I can be in the thick of action or just standing there at the AH. Same result - black screen crash that I can't recover from (need to reboot the system).

My system specs below:
Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 @ 2.26 GHz
Windows Vista Home Premium, 64 bit (service pack 2)
Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS w/1024MB DDR3 vid ram (DirectX version 11.0)
Using GeForce display driver v 195.62
4 gig RAM

At this point the game has become unplayable and it's too bad cuz I'm a monthly subscribing VIP. If I can't get a resolution in the next couple days I expect to be cancelling my account - no point in paying if I can't play right?

If anyone can assist I would really appreciate it.
I downloaded and installed RivaTuner so if you need me to run some tests I can.
Thanks in advance.

I have a GeForce 7600 series and the 196.21 driver, and when I play DDO, the video will blink out for a second (sometimes two or three). It always comes back, but it might blink out again right away, or not again for 5 - 10 minutes. Recently, the video and audio hung up/repeated for a few secs.

This hasn't happened with any other game so far, but I haven't tried any other 3D game.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Could it just be my video card going out?

Thank you for any insight you can share,
Wants to game in TX

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I am using WinXP.

After playing around with this a while, I am almost positive it is either a texture or an object using a specific texture that is causing the issue. I've also found that turning off bump maps in the advanced graphics settings lessens the problem (the black screen recovers most of the time) but does not remove it completely.

The textures that I can say dump me to a black screen 100% of the time are the spider webs they use to decorate any spider lair area (maybe an alpha channel issue?), and the square grid tile floor texture. With the spider webs, as soon as any of them get on screen I get the pause and black screen. With the floor tile, I get the black screen and it usually recovers, but then I sometimes get invisible geometry (where the walls, floor and sometimes mobs/breakables disappear leaving me seemingly standing in air).

Again I could be wrong, but I think there is a serious issue with some of their textures and newer video cards and/or Win7/Vista.

been having the same issues here, BSOD when playing at random, or in the loading screens.

i downloaded rivatuner and gpu temp at rests holds around 50-55C
when playing ddo it only gets to around 65C and then crashes..so its not a temp issue i think.

I had the same problem even to the point to where my whole system would crash. I tried one thing and I'm really not sure what fixed it but I don't crash or have a black screen anymore. First before I play the game I turn off my Anti-Virus Resident shield. I have AVG free version. Then under advanced graphics settings I check marked two boxes at the bottom. Sync with refresh rate and triple buffering. Since I have done both of those things I have not had one crash. (Knock on Wood)

I am the +1 player, who have the problem.
I have Intel I5 2400 + Radeon HD 6770 + Win7 64bit.
Installed the newest drivers. Add the 4 exe for a FW and the anti-virus program.
Reinstalled the Win7 and the drivers again. The problem isn't gone.
Please Turbine help, I can't play when the event is here.

I've had this issue twice now, and both times, it was a hardware issue. All other games ran fine. DDO is absolute murder on graphics cards, it stresses them worse than anything else I've tried.

The older 8800/9800 (and related) cards were prone to the "Bumpgate" problem. You can google that if you like. NVidia settled a class action lawsuit for this issue in late 2010.

For desktop users, here's a possible troubleshooting method:

- Get similar card from Best Buy as replacement (meaning same chip family, to keep variations at a minimum). For example, an 8800, 9800, and GTS250 all use the G92 chip.
- If issue is gone, buy recent-model replacement graphics card from online retailer (as your original card is likely long out of warranty - but do check, if you have warranty, go for it!)
- If issue is not gone, curse mightily
- In either case, return test card to Best Buy with best regards

A bit sneaky, but what is one to do. I got lucky and got an RMA both times this happened (2009 and 2010), as I was _just_ inside the RMA period for my card. Went from an 8800GT (which failed) to a 9800GTX (which also failed) to a 9800GT (which is still running - hang on until Mar/Apr 2012, darling, you'll be 4 then and daddy can finally kick you to the curb and get a shiny new DX 11.1 card. SI or Kepler I'm thinking)

Laptop users are probably mostly out of luck. You can try to RMA if it's a GeForce card, there are known issues with those (again, Bumpgate). Beyond that, not much you can do, likely, to troubleshoot.

NVIDIAGTX670 Wink and Blink problem while playing DDO?
OS: Win7 64 bit
Unfortunately the newest of Nvidia's product line GTX670, 680, 690 has this blanking/blinking problem as well. We call it the "wink and blink". The problem was first noticed in Underdark and especially in Demonweb. The video card we first noticed this problem with is the GTX670 series from Nvidia , Galaxy or any of the others using the GTX670 chipset. The game, while playing, "freezes", goes black, then returns about 1 second later. Very annoying. The latest drivers (approx time-frame of test 6-1-2013) from Nvidia made the problem even worse, causing a complete lock, requiring a hard reboot. I had to re-install the native CDROM drivers to even get the computer to play even with the annoying "wink and blink" problem. The problem does not just manifest with DDO , but also with Crysis, and other games as well as Netflix, Hulu, and even playing DVD movies locally. To troubleshoot, the GTX670 was moved to another test computer with an Intel motherboard, more memory and a faster processor,..... no help. The problem is still there. Finally, a brand new video card was purchased , "just to test", and the issue is still present. Numerous players have commented on this problem in DDO. The really sad thing to note is that Galaxy claims that it's a DDO graphics programming issue, and Nvidia claims it's Galaxy's implementation of their new chipset. IF you buy from Newegg and it's past the 30 day timer, you cannot get a refund, even though the problem is a hardware chipset bug.

Even worse yet, the final solution was to purchase yet a 3rd video card (Raedeon Sapphire HD7870), and the problem was resolved.
None of the earlier GTX450-550 video cards exhibit this problem running all the same games or programs.
