Unusual Intermittent Lag

Here recently, I been experiencing weird intermitten lag when playing DDO.

The game (and my machine) starts lagging out really badly for around 2 minutes and then it clears up for 2 to 5 minutes and restarts again. It has happened several seesions now and it ONLY happens when DDO is running. I experience absolutely no lag with any other games or applications on my PC.

I even shut down everything I possibly cood in task manager to see if that clears it up. I also updated my Windows and Rebooted and cleared my cable connections.

Are you running anti-virus or anti-malware software that has an active protection process? If so you may need to add the Turbine folder to the exclusion list.

Yes I do run it but I never had issue with it before until recently and I have had this PC for 2 years now.

I'm currently having the same problem, but I don't think it's my computer... I'm betting the delay is being caused my my router.

I disabled my wireless card last night, and played DDO for a few hours over my cell phone's 3G service without a single problem, so I'm going to pickup a new router tonight :D

Are you running Vista or 7? If so, open up the Resouce Monitor next time you are in game and get this lag. You can view file read/write activity, network usage, CPU usage, and memory usage.

Chances are it's either an indexing service, or some sort of active protection software.

Worst case scenario, your hard drive is going bad, if that's the case you could do a scandisk with surface scan to flag bad sectors for a temporary fix, but you'll want to get a new hard drive as soon as possible.

I decided to run disk clean up and defrag it and see if that helps when i get a chance to play. I am running Vista and I dont think its my hard drive going bad because it only happens when I run DDO, no other applications make my system lag out like this.

Well I tried running the game last night and the lag is still there, not constant, it just comes and goes every few minutes.

Welcome to my world, I've been asking about it for months to no avail. I suggest you just get used to it. :)

I can go for hours playing with no problem and then, out of the blue, for no apparent reason, and completely random, the latency starts rising, the lag begins, after a couple of minutes I get a rush of data and can play for maybe 5 minutes before it starts again but then the loss starts cranking up. Most times I do lose connection to the chat server and then reconnect.

It only started after DDO:EU went live, I never had this issue before.

I have run down every suggestion made here at least twice. I dropped my connection to 28 which actually seemed to help for a couple of weeks and then it started all over again. I'm extremely frustrated about it. I never really know when I log on if I am going to be able to play or not... :( As a consequence, I avoid grouping and just do what I can or duo with the hubby. (Yes, he has this problem too)

Yes, I realize it's likely router/wireless related because I have ruled out bandwidth limitations from my satellite internet provider. I get it... It's TOTALLY on my end... That makes perfect sense when I have changed nothing on my end yet DDO has changed and this never happened before. Yes, logic dictates that the problem stems from me, it has nothing to do with some change made to the servers in terms of how packets are sent, nothing whatsoever... it's entirely my fault and I should just learn to deal with it... /sarcasm off.

Apologies for the rant, it's just that this is extremely irritating and I see so many people posting about it (in one form or another, each description of a lag and/or stuck issues pretty much boils down to this) yet nothing is being done. If it didn't happen before, why is it happening now? At this point, I wouldn't mind being lied to at least: i.e. "We are aware of this issue and are working diligently to discover the source of the problem in order to correct it." I really don't care if that's true, but please say something besides posting a link about wireless routers and node gobbledygook. I mean, come on...

Well I dont know what to say other than I ONLY have this problem when running DDO, and it only popped up in the last month. No other program or action on my PC makes it act this way, but no other PC's on our network having any latency issues. It not only lags through connectivity but it also bogs down my computer and makes it freeze up too.

Again, ONLY DDO makes this happen... I wish one of their techs would pop in here and say hello and ask questions but is that a fools dream to get actual tech support in here anymore? Use too they would respond within hours, its been 24 hours now and nada...

Did you take a look at the Resource Monitor like I suggested?

Look at file read/write access when the computer is bogging down. Also check RAM usage.

If nothing else, at least look at the Task Manager, under the Process tab, and sort by CPU cycles, so you can see what is using up all of your cycles. You could also sort by Memory, and see if something is eating up your RAM.

It may very well be that a recent change to the game causes more RAM usage, which is causing your computer to use virtual memory, which would cause the slow downs.

Nope, I think I know whats going on now as its happening more and more, and it could be more than one things.

However, as of right now, I think my vid card is dying... being unemployed makes this a big problem to replace...

Thinking that something is going on isn't really troubleshooting the problem. It only takes 5 seconds to switch to windowed mode, and open up the Resource Monitor, which will *show* you what's going on. I'm not sure why you are against doing something so simple.

Because my PC is crashing my friend, the vid card is frying... Anything intensive makes it crash, its over heating...

Ok, well the OP mentioned unusual lag, not crashes. Did it just recently start crashing? What type of error do you get? Do you get strange artifacts on screen, or any other video errors?

Well at first I thought my monitor or connection was going out, would go do something and come back and it is in sleep mode, couldnt do anything to clear the sleep mode.

Then, started to see my PC either just glitch on the screen or just freeze period.

I am also starting to smell the burnt ozone as well, so something I am pretty sure is frying if not the video card.

Right now, I took the side panel off, blew all the dust and junk out of the PC and started looking at the video card and cleared it out really well, the fan is a little jacked too. tresting it right now and see how long it lasts... lasted 3 hours this morning...
