Hi.
With Ubuntu being my favoured OS I have got DDO up and running under Wine (1.0.1). But it seems to crash a lot - suddenly the game simply exits and I have to start it up again. Apart from this the game runs smoothly.
Does this happen to other Linux users as well? Is there a fix?
Is this a Linux only problem or does people running Windows have the same issues ?

Oh that's sad :(
Hope they will fix it, cos it's a great game otherwise.

Running under ubuntu 9.10 here and no issues. Seems rock solid. You might want to upgrade to wine-1.1.35. I think they call it the 'beta release' of wine in the Ubuntu Software Center (assuming you are running 9.10 too).
Like I said, works like a charm and is rock solid under wine-1.1.35.

Thx, maybe I should upgrade my Wine then :)
So far I have reduced the graphics settings and the crashes has gone away.
Maybe the issue is pressing the settings to close to what the machine can handle?
That would at least explain why some people like davemason9000 are having problems on Windows as well.

Possible, but from my experience - it crashes on Windows as well, tho not for all users. One thing for sure that will eventually lead to a crash like you're describing is muling across several characters without /quitting and restarting the client (search the forums for the phrase "memory leak"). There have been extensive posts from users with extremely high system specs who experience the sames things you're describing (craashing and other performance issues when running graphics-intensive).
I've been running under wine via OpenSuSe almost two years, and with the exception of a mistake a couple wine versions ago that messed up sound (which you could fix by adding a dll override and was later fixed permanently by the wine team), it has been totally stable.
I get the same DDO performance in Wine as I do when testing/benchmarking under Windows. The thing I like most about running DDO under wine is the MUCH faster load time on starting the client.
