How can you tell how much rep you can give? Is it a formula like r/x where r is your reputation and x is unknown (to me at least)
or x*[green] where x (again unknown) is multiplied by your number of green boxes?
I'd like to know how many I'm +_ ing when I rep someone :).

the only way I know to check is to have someone look how much they have before and after you give it to them. when I know someone has given me rep I usually tell them how much they gave me.
BTW I know how much I have right now, I can call that before if you like.

DOH more than 1 person repped me but I've gone up 24 rep since posting. If no one who posted repped me and only the person who pmed me did, then the amount per level is .02 or 2% per reputation point.
how many boxes would you have at 980 rep?

I hadn't hit you yet, I just did this after this post.
I believe its based on the differnece, so see if you get more than weasel did.
edit: got repped in another thread, so that one was given with 2553.

I understand that its based somewhat on the relative difference between; starting at about 1,200 reputation, you no longer recieve actual bonuses from being repped by people with 0-50 reputation (you get a blue box instead of a green one and no net increase).
However, it doesn't seem like there's much difference despite Weasel having ~800 more than you according to the boxes. It might only care about people with less than you as far as scaling it down.

How to put this delicately...
When forum rep first came out the mods warned against gaming and/or reverse-engineering the mechanics. Given the crazy-ass ban hammers that I've seen wielded around here... well, just "be careful" .

I'd like to know this answer as well. One more data point here--what did this give you (based 2314 rep)?
Edit--uhg, can't rep yet--i'll check in tomorrow.

Ah, that explains it... I was wondering what those blue/gray boxes were... thought I was getting dinged again :D

What's really funny is that someone out there thinks a ding or two actually means anything.
I'm guessing they feel the need to leave their mark on people.... anyonymously :D

With that, I have come to the conclusion that it is not that they don't have enough to effect your rep level but rather they are trying to give you negative rep when they do not have enough to do so.

I think its every 50 rep of the person repping gives 1 rep point (as a baseline to someone with 0 reputation).
For every 50 rep of the reppee, this number is reduced by 1. Therefore 2 people with 500 rep would give 1 to each other (minimum amount), and someone with 2500 would give 50 points to someone with 0 rep and 20 to someone with 1500 rep.
I don't know if this is right but it's fun to imagine it is :).

as this was 2 times wrong already in this thread:
blue boxes means someone negrepped you who couldnt yet due to his low rep
so they are bad things :p
though id like to help to test out the formula, i know my rep atm, just need another to check out how much he adds me

As someone mentioned earlier, be careful with this. The forum mods have been throwing around infraction points like they are xmas presents. ;)

This thread (and all the how does rep work? what's rep? threads before) just goes to show the best way to gain rep is to post a question about rep rather than by posting something funny, helpful or insightful.
The formula for calculating rep is irrelevant when it is given out for such irrelevant things.
I just turned it off. There's a lot of trolls with mega-high rep that like to dish out the neg whenever you point out bad logic or something wrong they said - especially when you're right.

I don't believe this is true.
A blue box means someone POS-repped you but currently has such a low rep that their pos-rep isn't worth anything.
You can see that this is the case by having someone with no/low rep hit you, then increase that person's rep. The blue box in your userCP will become green once they hit a threshold.
When someone with less than 1500 rep tries to dole out neg rep, it simply tells them they cannot do so.

Strakeln's correct on this one. Blue rep boxes just mean you didn't receive any reputation, but it was an attempt from someone to give positive.
Now since this thread is turning into both a positive and negative rep farm, I'm going to be shutting it down. :(
