I'm interested in the Cleric class and prefer playing Elves (just a personal cosmetic preference) and was thinking of trying to meld the two into a decent self sufficient Warpriest type character.
I have noticed that Elves, initially, do not seem suited to playing this particular role, but hey, where there's a will there's a way, right?
Any ideas or advice is appreciated.
I am thinking of starting out with the basic Warpriest stats, and going from there.
I only get around 8 points to spend on skills so any suggestions there would be nice.
Also a suggestion for a starting feat would be nice too.
I noticed some start out as a Rogue first but I'm not really interested in filling that sort of role. Neither am I interested in being a full on party healer.

Elves are fine. My main is a Drow Generalist Cleric.
Human and Dwarf make better, but all races can make decent clerics.
Suggestion: do Generalist. At th end of the day, clerics don't even need to hit...Blade Barrier, Implosion, Greater Command, Holy Smite, Destruction are FAR better than a mace in your hand. You would be missing on the cleric's godlike uber killing uberness.

The problem is I really don't enjoy playing midline or backline full on spellcasters. Yet I can see the potential that a melee cleric can possibly have from some of the other builds I have seen around the forums.

I think Elf clerics are great. But from a healer standpoint.
Take the Least Dragon mark, and you can heal and buff and stay invisible, and get very little agro. Very little.
Take the Enhancment and get a Raise dead every 10 min at lvl 6.
If you are determined to go the Battle cleric route, the Lesser Dragon Mark for Displacement is nice IMO.

Then adopt one of those, but you can use the elven abilities for scimitars as your weapon of choice. No feats. Elves get +'s to scimitars in the enhancement line. Do take Extend at around level 6 for buffing, but otherwise ignore all mana/spellcasting. Make sure you have a 18 STR and ATLEAST a 14 CON at start. the rest into WIS. Your ability points you get every 4 levels has to be STR. I would still put points into Concentration for the fact you will be in the middle of battle.
Take only the WIS enhancement line, and Undying court. That's another +1 to scimitars and a raise dead clicky. Otherwise toughness enhancements and feats, any offensive enhancements, and combat feats. A level of Fighter could be beneficial.
At the end, be warned, you may be concidered a "bad cleric" and may not be seen as DPS. That may make your parties limited. Also, recommend getting a healer if you are not doing it. A bard would be fine. You may still lag behind the DPS tanks at the endgame, and may not be able to function well as a cleric without spending alot of cash fixing the character.
There is alot of "mays" It may not happen, but in most people it DOES.
