View Full Version : Problem with intro movie

Hi, relatively new player to the game. I decided to test out DDO after it became F2P, and was surprised to see that the game could be played even without a full download. I got on, logged in, played for a couple of levels until I required to leave Korthos. The game would not let me proceed, saying that the client was still being downloaded and that I should wait. At that point I decided to leave the game, however thought I could still repeat some quests around Korthos before I'd sign off and leave the thing downloading via Turbine. I start up the client, all's good and fine, log-in and choose my world, however as the actual game loads something seems off, some sort of intro movie appears at which point the client freezes and I get a windows error saying that the client needs to close and whether or not I'd like to send an error report.

I'm unsure if there's some sort of fix, or file that I could conceivably edit so that I could skip the intro movie altogether, as the movie had yet to appear until I logged out today. If there is any other information that I could provide that would be of use to you guys, I'd be glad to post it up here, just need you to tell me what it is you're looking for exactly. Also as a sidenote, I'd like to go on record saying I'm not technologically inclined, so forgive me if I'm slow on the uptake of something that may appear obvious to you.

Same thing happened to me. Worked fine until the entire game downloaded. Go figure.

I don't know of a fix, but I have a work around.

Find your UserPreferences.ini file and edit the appropriate line to read:

ShowIntroMovie=False

It kept my rig from crashing so I never went any further for troubleshooting.

I thought waiting for the thing to download completely may fix it, it wasn't the case; the fix you gave me, however, works great.

same problem here. worked fine yesterday(well not quite, I needed to open program two times, first it just crashes, the second time start up), now probably this stupid intro movie downloaded and the client freeze at one second from when the movie start. Then a Ctrl+Alt+Canc need to be made to get out from this.

The same work around worked for me too. I am running a new, fairly high budget Alienware computer with all the specs to run this game and then some. However on game launch I get a message saying some visual aspects of this program are not compatible with windows 7, and the visual effects have been changed to windows 7 basic.... and then on start up of the intro movie my machine would freeze cold. I appreciate you taking the time to post this work around, it made the differance between me playing this game are not. I guess DDO might need to do some updating,because theres no telling how many people come up against that issue and just blow off the game, as opposed to trying to take the time and read the forums and figure it out. My old laptop with Windows Vista did the same thing and I basically just abandoned this game.... writing the problem off due to an (Assumed) outdated graphics card and other hardware. It was only with my new laptop I decided to try the game yet again. Now come to find out there was a work around all along.

I'm having the same problem. I tried that fix, but it didn't seem to work.
Can Someone give me a more detailed explanation of that fix, or something else to try?

I just loaded the game using the incremental load and got to the character select screen and all my old chars were still there. I thought all was good. I waited for the full download to complete and logged into the server with no problems. It went to start a intro movie and the graphics went bad and it locked up and dumped me out. I thought I may need a driver update but it seems that it may be a problem with the client. I will try the work-around and see it that helps.

I too was having this issue, with the same strangeness that everyone seems to be seeing: when the game is partially installed, it starts up fine. But once it started downloading the full game, I got nothing but crashes at random points during, before, or after the Turbine intro movie.

Some_call_me_Tim's workaround seems to have worked for me though, since I can finally get to the character selection screen for the first time in a while. Thanks!

I still haven't finished downloading the full game yet, however...
