I've always been a gaming enthusiast (computer, roleplaying, tabletop ... the works) but have been horribly disappointed by so many computer games in the past that buying a game (any game) has become a very big decision. That's why it was lovely to be able to taste DDO as f2p. It's good, no it's very good. IMO this game has broken all sorts of wonderful new ground (too much to list) and my thanks to the developers. I would have never (no overstatement) started playing on subscription.
But now I'm seriously considering subscribing. It's held up by the value proposition of subscription play seeming limited when compared with purchasing content piecemeal
It's scary to subscribe (commit) to something for the long term when I've only been playing for a month or so. So I want to wait... see if it's a game I really want to play repeatedly for a long time. Which is unfortunately holding me back from purchasing stuff from the store in the meantime, because the purchases would be wasted if I went VIP. I'd suggest that these two facets shouldn't be mutually exclusive.
Perhaps:
- If VIP is terminated could completed adventures remain available for the premium player?
- When going VIP, could previously spent points (for things available on VIP) be refunded to the player?
This would make the decision a bunch easier, because I could purchase adventures knowing it would never be wasted, and jumping from VIP to premium would be a negligible decision, rather than a tough one. Yes I'd probably start with a month or 3 of subscription, and wouldn't be sure if I'd keep it up but that's the value proposition here.
