Hi, just a quick question.

Yesterday I went into the Vale for the first time with my lvl 12 monk. (yes, a little low....I just wanted to mess around a bit).

I had no problem with the ogers. The spider's however were handing me my buttox on a plate. Not only was I having a hard time hitting them....when I did hit them the damage reduction was negating all my damage.

What do I need to bypass the damage reductions on these spiders and what can I do to increase my to hit?

Right now, unbuffed with +2 of various effects, I'm sitting at 23 on first swing. I can self buff to 28 on first swing with GH and haste, but that still seems to be a bit low.

Dex (dex based) is sitting at 29 in wind stance. (Will be able to bump it up to 30 dex soon).

What else can I do....what do I need to buff up my to hit.....or is that something that will just come with time? And more importantly (for me right now), What exactly do I need to bypass the damage reduction out there.

As a side note. Out of all the characters that I have played....the monk is the MOST fun by far. Not the most powerful, but man....what a blast!!!!!

You need a puncturing weapon. There are ...hum... I think 1? or 2? such named weapons you could use as a monk.. prolly, what, min lvl 18 or so? I forget, I don't pay too much attention to monk stuff usually.

You could have also used a transmuter - before the devs took them out of the game.

Feel free to complain to them :)

Oh, you can also use shurikens! :D

Stuns work wonders on the mobs...

banishers work great for the Vale

Weighted works great there as well.

banishing of weighted kick major buttocks out there.

If you need to, use paralyzers as well.

What is your STR and do you have power attack? Its situations like the vale spiders that make you realize that you need base damage...not just tons of extra damage. They have tough DR against anything but piercing.

The only piercing monk weapon is the qstaff from the new dreaming dark quests (Rahl's Might (http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s220/jgould2005/DDO/Unlimited/Items/Weapons/RahlsMightForce.jpg)). DR types are here (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=178393) too.

Or, just use 2x daggers and go uncentered - monks are proficient in daggers so while you'll lose your wind stance speed bonus (drink a haste pot!) you don't get -4 to attack and you're probably doing more dmg over all.

Or, as others have suggested, just go vorpal or 5% weighted.

I would suggest rubbing their bellies. This will put them to sleep, allowing you to then wash them down the spout.

Mmmmm....ok, thanks for the reply's all. I had hoped there was some type of blunt weapon combo that bypassed the dr. It appears not. I'll have to mess around a bit to find out what works best for me. Have some plain 5% right now and no vorpals for my monk so this may be a bit tough.

As for my str...right now I think its sitting at 20. I know...low but went dex based so points will go into dex and wis.

To give actual advice, my monk uses a combination of Power Attack, Burst Handwraps, Improved Critical:Bludgeoning, and a Bloodstone. That lets me through for enough to crack their scaly hides.

Fists of Light will keep you healed up during the fight. The concealment finisher also helps. (air pos air) This presumes you chose the light path. Take out the caster spiders first, the others are a matter of attrition.



It is certainly possible for a 12 monk to solo the vale. Just take it nice and slow, kill a few guys and self heal via ki between fights as needed.
