View Full Version : Whirlwind Attack fighter

I started a Fighter with the main goal of using the Whirlwind Attack feat. I'm already level 5, so I'll get that done in my next level (I'll get Whirlwind Attack and Thoughness as my feats), but that's as far as I designed. I need advice from veteran players in how to go from here.
Multiclasses ideas are welcome, but I don't won't to astray in classes combos. I know that I could get those same feats from Monk/Ranger multiclass, but since the feats were my only interests I decided to remain as a Fighter. If I were to multiclass I'd like to be able to use the progression skill/spell of that class as well, not only getting the first levels of them to get enhanced. More importantly, I want a character with a well defined role that will be wanted/needed in the endgame content.
Any ideas?

I started a Fighter with the main goal of using the Whirlwind Attack feat.
Whirlwind Attack should not be anyone's goal. In fact, if Whirlwind attack were a free feat granted to all characters at level 1, it would usually be a mistake to click the icon.
To see what Whirlwind Attack is like, you can take Power Attack and Cleave at level 1. Just click Cleave, and pretend that it hit all the way behind you, but could be used one fifth as often.
You are running into a game design flaw: the Whirlwind Attack feat is not as good as it should be, considering the prerequisites. In fact, all the melee AOE and DOT feats are brokenly weak (Cleave, Great Cleave, Whirlwind, and Slicing Blow). It would be nice if the devs could fix them up, right after they finish True Reincarnation and capstones and specialties.

If you're interested in what it might take to fix the Cleave and Whirlwind feats, here is a suggestion to that effect:

I should point out that there is a minor bucket of snails potential in there, but I think it wouldn't be a true problem.

Ok, I was somehow expecting that the the Whirlwind Feat wouldn't be as good as it should, since I haven't seen many Fighters with it, but I though it was due to it's feats requirements, even so, the character is already on the way so I'd still like some advice in how to go from there.

You continue advancing as a pure fighter, but don't take any of the following feats:
Mobility, Spring Attack, Whirlwind, Great Cleave, Power Critical, Slicing Blow
You instead take
Power Attack, ITWF, GTWF, Improved Critical, Weapon Spec, Greater Spec, Greater Focus, Stunning Blow, Toughness, etc
If you have Mobility already, get Siberys shards and replace it with something else.

NO! I was certainly expecting more from a eteran's advice than something like this. In your very short-attempt-to-be-funny reply you sound like the character is of no use at all, which I can tell you from playing with it so far it is not true.
The character has high Dexterity and an average Intelligence scores, so there no build to use those to continue as a Fighter or Multiclass? Really?

remove TWF and go ranger and then take tempest at 6th and 12th level ranger, you've already taken to many levels of fighter to go for tempest 3 at 18th ranger.
You need spring attack, mobility, and dodge for Tempest anyways.

actually, you should seriously consider rerolling, 10 con is a NO NO for a frontline melee

This is the best adivice you've gotten so far. For a front line mele it's all a balancing act. If you have a low con and hit points you had better have a high AC 52+ otherwise you need a boat load of hit points to counteract. With that build you'll have neither hit points or armor class. My advice would be to reroll the character and from the begining decide if you want to be a two-handed great-axe/greatsword/falcion swinger or a dual weapon fighter. With that in mind, for a THF take the THF line, power attack, cleave, and great cleave. For the TWF take the TWF line but be sure to allocate your stats appropriatly.
For a THF just max your CON and STR. For a TWF start out with a 15-16 DEX and evenly disrtibute the rest of your build points into STR and CON. For a beginer I'd reccomend staying pure fighter, as the mass amounts of feats you get allows you much room for trial and error and could help you learn what things do. Leave the multi-class builds to more expirianced people, and do one when you get a grasp on things. Good luck, and welcome to the game!

this is a very bad suggestion. level up points should be all allocated into 1 stat, unless there are some important reasons

That was meant at character generation, not level ups. My bad should have been clearer.

I used Whirlwind for a while to test and agree with your comment. I won't say it is a mistake to click. When there are multiple mobs, it's funny to run in the center and do whirlwind, and I believe it deals with higher overall damage. However, the timer takes too loooooooong to reset, and it's a waste of feat slot to take Whirlwind.
