hi all i am having trouble deciding which class to settle on. maybe some opinions might assist me. i read a Post (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=175911) on the sorcerer section that details how sorc are better but cannot find a similar thread in the wizard forums i am interested in a general consensus. Sorcerer or Wizard? how is one better than the other in your general opinion. thanks for any input you can offer. btw i am really enjoying this game. i should have stumbled onto it sooner

which class has better looking gear overall? i:e end game gear etc.

which class gets better aoe spells? and what spells are the biggest hard hitting aoe nukes?

Edit also which is your preferred sub class for your choice and why?

same spells, same gear. sorcs hit harder and a lot more. wizards get more feats and access to all spells. the crux of more feats comes with spell pen and spell focus. similarly built the sorc will do more damage, the wizard will land spells with a higher success rate.

... and drow? sure the bonus to cha and int looks goos now but consider that a warforge self heals as a caster and all those yummy immunities...

sorcs hit just as hard, or even a little weaker if we're talking about lvl 20. They just hit faster and more.

I would suggest trying wizard first. That way you can try the spells and learn what each one does and if you bring the wrong spell to a quest you can switch it easily.

Sorc Pros
More SP
More SP from items
Faster casting
UMD

Sorc Cons
1 level behind Wiz in getting higher level spells
less feats
cant change spells to suit quest/group

I personally like Drow for Sorc (healing with UMD'ed wands and 4 Chr compared to WF) or WF for Wiz.

thanks for the insight, i am a bit unfamiliar with some of the terminology, what is UMD and WF?

and say a level 20 wizard compared to a 20 sorc, who has more sp total and do spells cost basically the same not counting if spell enhancing feats are in use?

also which spells are ultimately inaccessible for sorcerers but accessible for wizards? i think thats what im getting from the replies anyway i do like having access to all and every spell possible

Drow is my favorite race to play in D&D , call me a fanatic :D i even went as far as to buy the pts so i could have access to it , i may try a warforge at some point but who knows.

Sorc have more SP

Spells cost the same.

Both classes have access to all arcane spells. However wizards can have more spells prepared and switch them out easier. Sorcs have more SP and can cast faster.

I consider Drow Wizards and Warforged Sorcs to be optimal currently at endgame.

Drow Wizards have the highest save DCs possible due to having feats to invest in Spell Focus feats. Warforged Sorcs are self-healing, damage dealing machines.

what is UMD and WF?

UMD == Use Magical Device [Chr skill]. Allows you to use wands, scrolls, race/alignment restricted items you would not normally be able to. (ie sorc using Cure Medium Wounds wand or Heal scrolls)

WF == Warforged.

just a comment on the casting Sorc vs Wiz.
If a Wiz like to cast as fast a a Sorc he can use quicken feat (cost extra spellpoint).
The bigg advantage for the Sorc is the lower cooldown (and bigger sp + other minor stuff in above posts).
So you can basicaly cast the same spell 2 times more if you like to spam the same spell (compare to a wizard) - in a limited time.
